Magnolia Pictures has released a fantastic trailer for their documentary feature Folktales , from Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, who previously made Jesus Camp , 12th & Delaware , Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You , One of Us , Dogs , and I Carry You With Me .
The film's synopsis reads: 'In Norse mythology, the three "Norns" are powerful deities who weave the threads of fate and shape humans' futures. Today, Pasvik Folk High School in northern Norway aims to produce a similar life-changing effect on its students.
'Folktales tells the timely and heartwarming story of teenagers who choose to spend an unconventional 'gap year' learning to dog sled and survive the Arctic wilderness, in hopes of finding connection and meaning in the modern world.
'Guided by patient teachers and a yard full of heroic Alaskan huskies, they discover their own potential and develop deep relationships with the land, animals and humans around them.
'Through intimate verité storytelling and exhilarating cinematography, Ewing and Grady examine humans on the cusp of adulthood, finding themselves at the edge of the world.'
This looks like a beautifully made film, and it's really cool that it covers a place most of us have never heard of. The dog aspect of the pic is just the cherry on top. I love dogs, and these ones look like they truly enhance the lives of the kids they connect with.

'They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling,' he added, likening the sensation to being on a boat with poor balance. While the first half of the film, which premiered in June at the Tribeca Festival, focused on the little-told story of how Joel's relationship with his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, shaped the early days of his career, the second covers more familiar territory. Starting with the production of 'The Nylon Curtain' in 1982, it chronicles his much discussed marriages to Christie Brinkley and Katie Lee Biegel, his well-documented struggles with alcohol, the betrayal of his manager Frank Weber, his decision to retire from the road and eventual return to live performance following the '12-12-12' benefit concert for Hurricane Sandy relief. And still, the nearly two-and-a-half-hour exploration of his life and career makes time to delve into his complicated relationship with his father, Howard, as well as his retreat from producing new pop music and the influence of classical compositions on his work. Here are five takeaways. The Holocaust looms large in Joel's family history. Joel's Jewish identity comes into play heavily during the second part of the documentary, specifically with regard to his fraught relationship with his father, Howard Joel. He describes how in his mid-20s he discovered that his paternal grandfather, Karl Joel, had a textile factory in Nuremberg. The family lived next to the park where the Nuremberg rallies were held and Joel speculates about the trauma his father must have endured watching those unfold as a young Jewish boy. Joel's grandfather was targeted by Nazi propaganda newspaper Der Stürmer and was forced to sell his business, though he was never paid. A second season of Meghan's lifestyle series "With Love, Meghan" has already been filmed and is set to premiere on the platform this fall. Although a specific release date hasn't been announced, the Duchess of Sussex previously teased the upcoming season with an ASMR-inspired montage posted to Instagram. ABC News Studios and the Canadian Broadcasting Company announced on Thursday, July 24, that they are premiering a documentary about the iconic Lilith Fair music festival in conjunction with original founder . Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery is a feature-length documentary from director Ally Pankiw that "tells the untold story of the groundbreaking music festival featuring only women artists, started by iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan and her team in the late 1990s, in opposition to systematic industry barriers that limited women from playing together on a concert bill and getting back-to-back airplay on the radio," according to the press release. The documentary is inspired by the Vanity Fair article "Building a Mystery: An Oral History of Lilith Fair," and it "draws from more than 600 hours of never-before-seen archival footage as well as new interviews and stories from fans, festival organizers, and artists."The press release continues, "The documentary reunites and features interviews from original Lilith Fair artists Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Paula Cole, Jewel, Mýa, Natalie Merchant, Indigo Girls, and Emmylou Harris, and a new generation of artists who have carried the torch, including Brandi Carlile and Olivia Rodrigo, among others. As the film celebrates the festival's groundbreaking legacy and impact, it also confronts the backlash that tried to diminish it and explores what Lilith means in today's world." 'I'm so filled with pride and nostalgia watching this film,' said McLachlan in a statement. 'Ally and the team have beautifully captured the magic and strength of a community of women who came together and lifted each other up to create positive change in the world. I hope the film resonates with everyone and we can continue to strive to support and champion one another.' The film was produced by actor Dan Levy's Not A Real Production Company, and he said in a statement, "Lilith Fair holds a very special place in my heart.
