Venus Williams receives wild card for US Open singles

Two-time former champion Venus Williams is set to make her 25th US Open appearance after receiving a wild card into the women's singles.
The 45-year-old American recently returned from a 16-month layoff after a serious health scare and was among eight women's wild card recipients named by tournament organisers.
Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Williams will become the oldest singles entrant at the US Open since Renee Richards, who was 47 in 1981.
Williams underwent surgery last year to remove uterine fibroids and missed most of the season.
She made her comeback last month and became the oldest WTA match winner since Martina Navratilova at the age of 47 at Wimbledon in 2004, beating Peyton Stearns in the first round of the DC Open.
Williams, the 2000 Sydney Olympic singles champion, has also won five Wimbledon singles titles to go along with her 2000 and 2001 US Open triumphs.
She lost in the final in New York on her debut to Martina Hingis as a teenager in 1997. Venus also finished runner-up to younger sister Serena in 2002.
The most recent of her 49 WTA titles came in 2016 at the Taiwan Open.
Williams will also compete in the new-look US Open mixed doubles next week alongside Reilly Opelka.
France's Caroline Garcia, 31, was given a wild card into what will be her final Grand Slam before retirement. Her best run at a major came when she reached the US Open semi-finals three years ago.
Americans Clervie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman and Alyssa Ahn are other wild card recipients, as is Australian Talia Gibson.
On the men's side, American players Brandon Holt, Nishesh Basavareddy, Tristan Boyer, Emilio Nava, Stefan Dostanic and Darwin Blanch all earned wild cards.
The final two went to France's Valentin Royer and Australia's Tristan Schoolkate.
The US Open singles main draw begins on August 24. (AFP)

Photo: Reuters World number two Carlos Alcaraz fought off a fierce challenge from Andrey Rublev to reach the semi-finals of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Friday as women's defending champion Aryna Sabalenka was sent crashing out by Elena Rybakina. Spain's Alcaraz broke Rublev in the final game of a tense duel to emerge a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 winner and will face third-seeded Alexander Zverev, who brought the winning run of fifth-seeded Toronto Master champion American Ben Shelton to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Germany's Zverev complained of feeling dizzy and out of breath as he led by a set and a break, but benefitted from 27 unforced errors from a listless Shelton over 76 minutes. Zverev earned a 4-1 lead in the second set as Sheldon angrily tossed his racquet on the changeover, and the 2021 champion polished off the win on a second match point and now has 24 hours to try and get fit. "I'm not feeling too great now, but I have a day to get fresh," Zverev said. "I hope to be at 100 percent. I'm not sure what happened. I felt very well but at the end of the first set it got progressively worse. But I'll do all I can to give it a shot tomorrow." Alcaraz was broken while serving for victory at 5-4 in the final set against 11th-ranked Rublev, but he found his focus and used his trademark grit to come through three games later. He sealed the triumph as an emotional Rublev hit an eighth double-fault on match point. "I maintained the positive thoughts even if I lost focus a bit in the second set," said Alcaraz, whose five titles so far this year include the French Open as well as Masters 1000 trophies in Monte Carlo and Rome. Top seeded Sabalenka had no answer for 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina, who beat the Belarusian 6-1, 6-4 to book a semi-final meeting with Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek – a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Anna Kalinskaya. Rybakina claimed a fifth victory in her 12-match personal rivalry with Sabalenka, avenging a loss to the Belarusian in Berlin two months ago. She was aided by 11 aces as she reached her first Cincinnati semi-final. "I'm happy with the serve. It was the key today," Rybakina said. "I served really well." "If she had been serving well it would have been a totally different match," she acknowledged. Rybakina has won her last three matches against Swiatek, all played this season. Swiatek needed 93 minutes and five match points to get past Kalinskaya in what she called "the best match I played here". In other quarter-final action, Veronika Kudermetova crushed Varvara Gracheva 6-1, 6-2 and awaits the winner of Friday night's match between world number two Coco Gauff and ninth-ranked Jasmine Paolini. Robots will compete in sports such as football, track and field, and table tennis, as well as tackle robot-specific challenges from sorting medicines and handling materials to cleaning services. Teams come from countries such as the United States, Germany and Brazil, with 192 representing universities and 88 from private enterprises. Robots from Chinese companies including Unitree and Fourier are among those competing. The Beijing municipal government is among the organising bodies for the event, underscoring the emphasis Chinese authorities place on the emerging robotics industry and reflecting the country's broader ambitions in artificial intelligence and automation. The sector has received government subsidies exceeding US$20 billion over the past year, while Beijing plans to establish a one-trillion-yuan fund to support AI and robotics startups. China has staged a series of high-profile robotics events in recent months, including what it called the world's first humanoid robot marathon in Beijing, a robot conference and the opening of retail stores dedicated to humanoid robots. However, the marathon raised questions about the current capabilities of the technology. While some may view such competitions and events as publicity stunts, industry experts and participants see them as crucial catalysts for advancing humanoid robots towards practical real-world applications. Morgan Stanley analysts in a report last week noted a surge in attendance at a recent robot conference by the general public compared to previous years, saying this showed "how China, not just top government officials, has embraced the concept of embodied intelligence". "We believe this widespread interest could be instrumental for China's continued leadership in the humanoid race, providing the necessary talent, resources and customers to boost industry development and long-term adoption," they said. Booster Robotics, whose humanoid robots are being used by a Tsinghua University team in the football competition, views the sport as an effective test of perception, decision-making and control technologies that could later be deployed in factories or homes. Atmane, ranked 136th in the world, followed up his victory over world number four Taylor Fritz with a confident performance against Denmark's Rune to book a semi-final clash with world number one and defending champion Jannik Sinner. "I don't think any words can describe how I feel right now," said the 23-year-old, adding that he had trouble sleeping after his big win over Fritz on Wednesday. "I was just trying to be myself on the court." Atmane, 23, is through to his first career Masters 1000 semi-final. He is the first qualifier to reach the Cincinnati last four in 10 years. The Frenchman had won just one of four tour-level matches this year before arriving in Cincinnati.
