France says Australia defence ties repaired after submarine row

CNA13-07-2025
SYDNEY: France's defence relations with Australia have recovered after their 2021 bust-up over a major submarine contract, the country's ambassador said on Sunday (Jul 13).
Paris expressed its "strong regrets" when Australia tore up a multibillion-dollar deal to buy a fleet of diesel-powered submarines from France, Ambassador Pierre-Andre Imbert said.
Since the 2022 election of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, however, the defence relationship had been "restarted", he said.
"Now, the first pillar of our cooperation is defence and security, so we have a very good level of cooperation," the ambassador told AFP as French forces joined major military drills around Australia.
When Australia ditched the French deal, it opted instead to acquire nuclear-powered vessels in a new three-way AUKUS pact with the United States and Britain.
But a US defence official last month revealed that a review of AUKUS was underway to ensure it "aligned with the President's America First agenda" and that the US defence industrial base was "meeting our needs".
Under the AUKUS deal, Australia would acquire at least three Virginia-class submarines from the US within 15 years, eventually manufacturing its own subs.
The US Navy has 24 Virginia-class vessels but American shipyards are struggling to meet production targets set at two new boats each year.
Asked if France would ever consider discussing a new submarine deal with Australia if the AUKUS agreement was torpedoed by the review, the French ambassador said he was reluctant to speculate.
"I would say it's more an issue for Australia for the moment. And of course, we are always discussing with our friends of Australia," he said.
"But for the moment, they have chosen AUKUS," he said. "If this changes (and) they ask, we'll see."

Australia, Britain to hold talks on boosting defence and economic ties

Dan Kitwood/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo SYDNEY - Australia and Britain's defence and foreign ministers will hold talks in Sydney on Friday on boosting cooperation, coinciding with Australia's largest war games and the first visit by a British carrier strike group in three decades, Australia said. Following the Australia-United Kingdom Ministerial Consultations (AUKMIN), Britain's Foreign Minister David Lammy and Defence Secretary John Healey are scheduled to travel to the northern garrison city of Darwin, where the British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales has arrived for the Talisman Sabre war games. Australia sees Britain as a critical partner and the two countries are working closely amid "shared strategic challenges in an increasingly complex and uncertain world", Defence Minister Richard Marles said in a statement. As many as 40,000 troops from 19 countries are taking part in the Talisman Sabre exercises held from July 13 to August 4, which Australia's military has said are a rehearsal of joint war fighting that contribute to stability in the Indo-Pacific. Britain has significantly increased its participation in the exercise co-hosted by Australia and the United States, with 3,000 troops taking part. The talks are expected to focus on progressing the AUKUS partnership for Britain and Australia to build a new class of nuclear-powered submarine, even as the United States reviews the trilateral defence technology agreement and presses Australia to increase defence spending. Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that Britain and Australia were "longstanding friends" and the two countries wanted to modernise the relationship. Top stories Swipe. Select. US should focus on economic ties to compete with China in Indo Pacific, says former Australia PM

Australian incumbent Prime Minister Scott Morrison speaks during the second leaders' debate of the 2022 federal election campaign at the Nine studio in Sydney, Australia May 8, 2022. Alex Ellinghausen/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo SYDNEY - Australia's former Prime Minister Scott Morrison, testifying at a U.S. Congress panel hearing about countering China, has urged the U.S. to "double down" on its economic engagement in the Indo Pacific where Beijing is asserting influence. Speaking on Wednesday, Morrison said economic security is the main security focus of many countries in Southeast Asia, and U.S. leadership on economic issues and Western investment gives the region choice. "When China is active in a particular country ... the response to that is not for the U.S. or other allied interests to not be there, the response is to double down and be there even more strongly to provide them with that choice," he said. Morrison was invited to speak to the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party about his government's experience of China imposing $20 billion in unofficial trade sanctions after Australia called for an inquiry into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The sanctions were lifted by Beijing after Morrison lost a national election in 2022, and Anthony Albanese's Labor government sought to stabilise ties with Australia's largest trading partner. Morrison said the U.S. should work more with its Quad allies including Australia and Japan to build a supply chain for critical minerals and rare earths needed for defence equipment, including the nuclear-powered submarines Australia is buying from the United States under the AUKUS pact. "The processed rare earths, whether they go into nuclear submarines, F-35s or whatever it happens to be, that is essential for those things to be done," he said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Türkiye nears Eurofighter jet purchase after UK, German agreements

ISTANBUL: Türkiye reached deals with NATO allies Britain and Germany on Wednesday (Jul 23) that pave the way to acquiring dozens of Eurofighter Typhoon jets, which Ankara has sought to bolster defences in an increasingly volatile region. Britain signed a preliminary deal allowing Ankara to operate the jets while Germany approved delivery of 40 of them to Türkiye, which has relied on both foreign purchases and its own defence industry projects, including domestic jets, to ramp up deterrence. Beyond the Eurofighters, Ankara is also in talks with Washington to purchase 40 F-16s. Israel's attacks on regional countries, including its 12-day conflict with Türkiye's neighbour Iran and more recent strikes on another neighbour Syria, have unnerved Ankara, prompting a push for rapid armament in order to counter any potential threats. Türkiye has been in talks since 2023 to purchase 40 Eurofighter Typhoons, which are built by a consortium of Germany, Britain, Italy and Spain, represented by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo. Speaking at a signing ceremony with British Defence Secretary John Healey in Istanbul, Defence Minister Yasar Guler said the deal brought Türkiye "one step closer to a fully comprehensive agreement" on the jets, adding it would also strengthen NATO and Türkiye aerial capabilities. "We welcome this positive step toward our country joining the Eurofighter Typhoon club, and want to reiterate our mutual ambition to complete the necessary arrangements as soon as possible," he said. Guler also told reporters that the composition of the planned acquisition was for 40 jets but that different options were being considered. NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR BAE UK FACTORY Separately, the German government - initially opposed to the sale - has cleared the way for the delivery, a government spokesperson said. Spiegel news magazine reported earlier on Wednesday that the government's Federal Security Council, which decides on arms export licences based on legal and foreign policy considerations, had made a positive decision on the order for 40 jets. "I can only confirm that the Ministry of Defence has sent a written confirmation to the Turkish government confirming that the export has been approved," a government spokesperson said when asked about the report at a regular press conference in Berlin. The agreements come after weeks of positive statements from Ankara and the Eurofighter consortium on the sale, with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan praising the German and British stance on the issue this week. Britain said negotiations with Türkiye over an ultimate sale will continue over the coming weeks. The deal would be the first export order secured by Britain for the jet since 2017 and would give a new lease of life to the final assembly line at BAE's factory in northern England. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the multi-billion dollar agreement with Türkiye would "sustain and protect 20,000 UK jobs for future years to come", while an official at BAE Systems said last week the company was confident of winning new orders from countries, including Türkiye.
