
AI to help mark student exams
Exam board AQA is working with King's College London academics to create an AI virtual assistant to assist and support exam paper markers.
More than £600,000 of taxpayer money is funding the three-year scheme which intends to boost the accuracy and reliability of the grading process.
Professor Yulan He, an expert in using machine learning to understand written text, is leading the work and said the aim is to reduce errors, make mark schemes fairer, and give quicker feedback to students.
'We aim to create an AI technology that can add a layer of quality control and support experts mark accurately and consistently,' Professor Yulan told The Telegraph.
'The goal is very much not to create an AI system that replaces examiners marking students' work, but recognises that marking is a really demanding task and supports them to mark more consistently and faster.'
The AI assistant could be used to check the marks given by a human and detect any scores which seem erroneously low or high based on the AI's own assessment.
Other possible applications are to check the quality of answers from students using language analysis machine learning and scrutinising the relevance, factuality, coherence and logical reasoning of an answer.
The AI could also be used to refine the mark scheme if there is a flaw in how marks are given to ensure fairer marking and also to give AI-generated explanations to students as to why they did or did not get a question correct.
Government backing for AI in education
Peter Kyle, the Science and Technology Secretary, told The Telegraph the project will help pupils reach their potential and 'open as many doors as possible'.
'The central, most exciting, opportunity that AI affords us is not where it can replace human expertise, but where it will enhance it,' he said.
'By adding a layer of support and quality control for exam markers, this work by King's College London can make sure every student receives the fair assessment they deserve, to fulfil their potential and open as many doors as possible for their future success.
'These projects are combining cutting-edge research with professional expertise to turn research into practical solutions that can improve people's daily lives and drive growth as part of our Plan for Change.'
Prof Yulan insisted the human involvement in marking papers is critical to the process and AI will be used to facilitate and refine instead of to replace.
'This is not to replace the human marker. Humans in the loop are very important. Our AI technology will just add a layer of quality control and support experts mark accurately and consistently,' she said.
'There is no danger of this being used to mark next year's exam papers unsupervised, for example.
'We aim to develop a safe and reliable virtual assistant in collaboration with teachers, learners and subject experts, that could be used in the future to assist examiners when they mark.'
Pepe Di'Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: 'If AI can provide an extra level of quality assurance, which supports examiners and improves the accuracy and consistency of grading, then that is clearly a good thing which we very much support.
'As with any project to utilise AI, it is absolutely essential that it is robustly tested before being rolled out into the real world, and that exam scripts are always seen by human beings. We're pleased to see assurances to this effect.
'The process of marking and grading exams is a major undertaking which has to be delivered to tight deadlines, so the potential of technology to support this process is certainly something which should be explored. We look forward to seeing how this project develops.'
'People should always remain in control'
AQA is one of the country's largest examination boards.
Around 1.4 million students sat one of its qualifications last year and more than nine in ten schools have at least one AQA course in its curriculum.
Around 30,000 teachers, lecturers, subject experts and academics help design its tests and mark exams each year.
Cesare Aloisi, AQA's head of assessment innovations, said: 'We're always looking for ways to enhance the support we give the examiners who mark our exam papers and to develop even more sophisticated quality controls.
'AI can help us do that with the important guiding principle that it is there to help human expert judgment, and that people should always remain in control.
'For example AI could flag marks that may be too lenient or too severe, but it would always be a person deciding what mark to give. We think it is essential that our expert examiners, and not AI, make these decisions that are so important for young people's futures.'

Return of the grant! Electric cars about to get a lot cheaper
Electric cars will soon be more accessible to buyers. The government has announced plans for huge investment in buyer subsidies in order to bring down prices, as well as improved EV charging infrastructure to make it easier to plug-in at home. With the full details set to be laid out on Tuesday, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told the BBC that 'We are going to be making some announcements later this week on how we make it more affordable for people to buy an electric vehicle.' Advertisement - Article continues below According to the Telegraph, the government is rumoured to have set aside over £640 million of taxpayer cash in order to help reduce down payments on electric cars – much like the original Plug-In Car Grant scheme that was discontinued in 2022 and awarded buyers £1,500 towards the price of a new EV. Interestingly, sources suggest that there will be a price ceiling, meaning more expensive EVs will not be eligible, while vehicles built within the UK will be given preferential treatment in this regard. The forthcoming Nissan Leaf electric SUV is set to be one of the biggest benefactors as it is set to be manufactured within the Japanese giant's plant in Sunderland and thus benefit from extra subsidies. The electric MINI Cooper, on the other hand, likely won't get the same treatment as the Nissan as unlike that car, it's built in China; MINI recently paused its plans to bring EV production to Oxford, citing slow sales. That's not all, however, as the government has also invested £25 million to aid private councils in installing cross-pavement charging solutions; these so-called 'gulleys' involve digging a small trench into the pavement in which a flap will be installed, allowing a charging cable to be draped across the road without becoming a trip hazard. Co-founder of cross-pavement charging solution firm, KerboCharge, Michael Goulden, said he was 'delighted by the news of the Government grant', stating that it 'demonstrates the Government's backing for cross-pavement charging and subsidising the cost for tens of thousands of UK households.' That £25 million comes as part of a larger £63 million lump sum towards building appropriate signage for EV charging stations, something founder of campaign group, FairFuel UK, Quentin Wilson, said was 'a very welcome development'. 'I'm overjoyed to see that finally non-EV drivers will see that there is a charging infrastructure to give them the confidence to switch,' Wilson explained. 'Years of not having any charging signage on our roads has helped stoke the myth 'there's no infrastructure'. I tried cheaper Samsung mobile rival that comes with four FREE gifts worth £289 including a Bluetooth speaker
GETTING a decent smartphone doesn't have to mean breaking the bank. Even the big names like Samsung and iPhone offer more budget-friendly options these days. 5 5 5 But there are a plethora of other lesser-known brands offering more bang for your buck too. Among those is Honor who has recently launched a new mid-range handset. It's by no means the cheapest around but fortunately there are some special deals to sweeten the deal, with gifts worth £289. As The Sun's Assistant Technology and Science Editor - and main smartphone reviewer - I get hands on with loads of devices all the time with years of experience putting many you will (and won't) have heard of through their paces. I've been using the Honor 400 Pro for the last week to see whether this latest Android effort is worth your attention and money. Honor 400 Pro: Look and feel First thing's first, the design of the Honor 400 Pro - and personally, I'm not overly keen. It's the bizarre hard-to-ignore camera module that looks like the bottom of a rocket. I realise making the camera lens blend in - or otherwise - is quite a tricky task but this approach just doesn't do it for me. However, what I do like is the silk matte glass which feels delightful on my finger tips and palm. It's also far less fingerprint prone than most devices I handle. First look at Google's new Android XR glasses with life-changing augmented reality I'm testing the Lunar Grey option - there's also black - so pretty safe colours here. The display itself is a 6.7-inch quad-curved 120Hz OLED display which is glossy, bursting with colour and detail, as well as being super bright, so no complaints on that front. At 205g it's not weighty nor is it light, but the phone does feel pretty tough for any dreaded drops. Honor 400 Pro: Performance and features The Honor 400 Pro runs on the company's own Android 15 skin, Magic OS. It's another visual element I'm not a mega fan of. When it comes to Android, I prefer the purest versions for a clean and familiar experience. But a real bugbear for me is bloatware apps, of which there are some on the Honor 400 Pro, such as Temu and ReelShort. While the 400 Pro runs off of Android 15 currently, Honor has committed to upgrade it to Android 16 by the end of this year which is a positive sign. And in terms of how long you can expect updates and security patches, the firm provides six years worth - you can see how that compares to other brands below. Who offers free updates longest? The longer you receive updates, the longer you can safely continue using your smartphone - with the latest features thrown in too for free. Samsung For the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung said it would provide at least seven generations of OS updates and seven years of security updates. OnePlus At the launch of the OnePlus 13, OnePlus committed to at least four years of Android updates and six years of security updates. Xiaomi Xiaomi offers four years off Android updates and five years security updates. Google For the Pixel 9 series, Google said that devices would receive at least seven years of support. Honor has gone big on AI tools on the 400 Pro and the one that really caught my attention is called Image To Video. With just a single image, the tech will create a short video - and it's scarily accurate. I tried it on a photo of my friend's dog and it showed her eerily moving around. The clips are only five seconds long and it's more of a party trick than anything mega useful. It's one of the many AI features made possible thanks to the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, which is market-leading. This tech also helps the phone run super smooth, so I can glide from one app to the next with a glitch, as well as handle games. Honor 400 Pro: Battery The battery is one area where the Honor 400 Pro excels with one of the biggest you'll find on a smartphone - and way above the likes of Samsung and iPhone. With moderate usage of apps like WhatsApp, occasional web browsing, as well as a bit of Spotify and Netflix, I was able to squeeze two days out of the battery. What's more, Honor goes all out on charging speed too with support for 100W. The battery is perfect for anyone who has battery anxiety and fears running out of power Alas, as is now the standard, such a charger isn't included in the box these days and I don't have one to test it myself. Fortunately, you can claim a free one as part of the gifts on offer if you buy from Honor's website. According to Honor, the Honor 400 Pro will go from zero to half full in just 15 minutes but we cannot verify this for the review. Honor 400 Pro: Camera Honor has ramped things up in the camera department with a 200-megapixel AI Main Camera. And the results are pretty stunning, with shots that are super detailed, colourful and vibrant. Just take a look at the photos I took of my friend's dog. The night mode camera also works a treat too, showing detail in my garden I couldn't see with the naked eye at midnight. 5 Honor 400 Pro: Price So, the Honor 400 Pro costs £699.99 with 512GB which I think is a bit steep. However, at the moment, the firm is taking £150 off with an early bird discount code, bringing it down to a much more reasonable £549.99. New research centre to explore how AI can help humans ‘speak' with pets
If your cat's sulking, your dog's whining or your rabbit's doing that strange thing with its paws again, you will recognise that familiar pang of guilt shared by most other pet owners. But for those who wish they knew just what was going on in the minds of their loyal companions, help may soon be at hand – thanks to the establishment of first scientific institution dedicated to empirically investigating the consciousness of animals. The Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience, based at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), will begin its work on 30 September, researching non-human animals, including those as evolutionarily distant from us as insects, crabs and cuttlefish. Harnessing a wide range of interdisciplinary global expertise, the £4m centre's work will span neuroscience, philosophy, veterinary science, law, evolutionary biology, comparative psychology, behavioural science, computer science, economics and artificial intelligence. One of its most eye-catching projects will be to explore how AI can help humans 'speak' with their pets, the dangers of it going wrong – and what we need to do to prevent that happening. 'We like our pets to display human characteristics and with the advent of AI, the ways in which your pet will be able to speak to you is going to be taken to a whole new level,' said Prof Jonathan Birch, the inaugural director of the centre. 'But AI often generates made-up responses that please the user rather than being anchored in objective reality. This could be a disaster if applied to pets' welfare,' said Birch, whose input to the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act led to it being expanded to include cephalopod mollusks and decapod crustaceans. Birch points to separation anxiety: dog owners often want reassurance that their pet is not suffering when left alone for long periods. Futuristic 'translation' apps based on large language models could promise to provide that reassurance, but end up causing harm by telling owners what they want to hear rather than what the animal actually needs. 'We urgently need frameworks governing responsible, ethical AI use in relation to animals,' said Birch. 'At the moment, there's a total lack of regulation in this sphere. The centre wants to develop ethical guidelines that will be recognised globally.' Birch also points to the lack of regulation around animals and driverless cars: 'We have a lot of debate around them not hitting people but we don't talk about them also avoiding cats and dogs.' AI and farming was another urgent issue for the centre. 'Farming is already embracing automation in a huge way and that's going to increase at pace,' Birch said. 'But it is happening without much scrutiny or discussion, which raises huge ethical questions about what the limits are: should farming involve caring relationships with animals? If so, the current direction is not the way in which we want farming to go.' The centre will work with non-governmental organisations to develop guidance, research and codes of practice that can be lobbied for around the world. Jeff Sebo, the director of the Center for Environmental and Animal Protection, at New York University, said issues of animal sentience and welfare, the effects of AI on animals, and public attitudes towards animals were 'among the most important, difficult and neglected issues that we face as a society'. 'Humans share the world with millions of species and quintillions of individual animals, and we affect animals all over the world whether we like it or not,' he said. Prof Kristin Andrews, one of the new centre's trustees, said she believed it could answer what she regards as the biggest question in science: what is human consciousness – and how can it be switched back 'on' in cases of stroke and other medical emergencies? 'We still don't understand what makes humans conscious, or why anyone starts or stops being conscious,' she said. 'But we do know that the way to get answers is to study simple systems first: science has made great strides in genomics and in medicine by studying simple organisms.' Dr Kristof Dhont, another trustee, said he was fascinated by human attitudes towards animal sentience. 'One of the most pressing behavioural challenges of our time is how to close the gap between what people believe about animals and how they actually behave towards them,' he said. 'Most people care deeply about animals but there are all these systems, habits, norms and economic profits that get in the way of translating that into the way we treat animals. 'I want to use behavioural science to understand, for example, why there's resistance to eating cultivated meat even though we all agree that it would save creatures who feel pain from being killed.' Jeremy Coller, whose foundation made the multiyear commitment to the centre, said his aim was to change attitudes in our 'speciesist species'. 'Only when we have a better understanding of how other animals feel and communicate will we be able to acknowledge our own shortcomings in how we treat them,' he said. 'Just as the Rosetta Stone unlocked the secrets of hieroglyphics, I am convinced the power of AI can help us unlock our understanding of how other animals experience their interactions with humans.'
