New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its judgement in a suo motu case initiated by it to consider the issue of probe agencies summoning lawyers who provide legal advice to accused involved in criminal cases.The suo motu was initiated by the top court after it had issued summons to two senior lawyers for rendering legal advice to their clients. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai reserved its verdict after briefly hearing arguments of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and other lawyers. "Lawyers need to be protected. Provisions are already there. But if they are party to the commission of crime, (they are not entitled to protection)," Mehta submitted. The bench said that it has already made it clear that no protection can be extended to such lawyers.At the last hearing, Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh had suggested that the guidelines issued by the ED to its officers should be adopted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other investigating agencies as well. Singh had further suggested that for CBI and state police, there should be permission from the Superintendent of Police for issuance of summons to lawyers. He had further proposed that summons to a lawyer should be sent only after the concerned judicial magistrate clears the same.The development took place during the resumed hearing of a suo motu case initiated by the SC on summons issued by ED to two senior advocates - Arvind Datar and Pratap Venugopal - in the course of ED's investigation into the grant of over 22.7 million Employee Stock Option Plans, valued at more than ₹250 crore, by Care Health Insurance to former Religare Enterprises chairperson Rashmi Saluja.

Brazil's Former President Jair Bolsonaro temporarily left house arrest Saturday to undergo medical exams in Brasilia, after a judge authorized him to spend six to eight hours at a hospital. A five-justice panel is expected to deliver verdicts and sentences on five counts against him between Sept. 2 and denies any wrongdoing. The far-right leader has been under house arrest since August. 5. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the case, said Bolsonaro violated precautionary measures by spreading content through his three lawmaker sons. A small group of fewer than 20 people gathered outside DF Star hospital Saturday, claiming Bolsonaro is a victim of political persecution. Some thanked US President Donald Trump, who has called the prosecution a 'witch hunt' and linked his decision to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports to Bolsonaro's legal troubles.

DMK is not the AIADMK to be afraid of Enforcement Directorate raids, says CM
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was not AIADMK to be afraid of Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids. Speaking at the CPI State conference titled 'Velga Jananayagam', the Chief Minister said the Union government was threatening the leaders of the Opposition parties, and referred to the ED raid at Minister I. Periyasamy's house on Saturday. 'We are not Edappadi K. Palaniswami to form an alliance with the BJP immediately after raids are conducted in relatives' houses. The DMK has faced many revengeful acts like this. Tamil Nadu people have political awareness, and they will defeat the BJP. In the 2026 Assembly election, the DMK alliance will win, defeating all such plots,' he said. 'The unity of our alliance is troubling many. Therefore, former Chief Minister Palaniswami is suddenly showing love towards Communists. No one is a slave to anyone. The Dravidian movement and Communism grew against slavery,' Mr. Stalin added. The Communists never forget to criticise the government, and the government does not forget to fulfill the demands of the Left parties. This is democracy, and so the alliance continues, he said, urging the democratic forces to unite against casteism and majoritarianism. 'Those who are against secularism and social justice are trying to divide the alliance, but their intention will not succeed. Eventually, democracy wins, and we [the democratic forces] have the responsibility to make it win,' he said. Mr. Stalin further announced that a memorial would be built near Salem Central Prison, where 22 Communist cadres were killed in the 1950 firing. He said instructions were given to the officials concerned, and that the works would begin on Sunday. Later, the Chief Minister reached Dharmapuri district, and participated in a road show from Adiyamankottai to Travellers Bungalow near the Collectorate.

ED searches DMK minister Periyasamy's residences
CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the houses, business premises and even the MLA hostel rooms of the state rural development minister I Periyasamy and his family members, including his son, IP Senthilkumar MLA, in Chennai and Dindigul, their hometown. The ED officials, who did not reveal the background for the searches, engaged a duplicate key maker to open the locked rooms in the official residence of the minister on Greenways Road. Meanwhile, the secretary of the assembly secretariat, K Srinavasan, lodged a complaint with Triplicane police alleging that 'unknown persons' had trespassed into the MLA hostel. City police acknowledged the receipt of the complaint by issuing a community service receipt (CSR). Sources said authorities locked the minister's cabin in the Secretariat in anticipation that ED teams might land there too, but ED sleuths stopped with the residence and the MLA hostel. Simultaneous searches happened in three places in Dindigul: the minister's residence in Durairaj Nagar, Senthilkumar's residence at Vallalar Nagar, and the minister's daughter Indra's residence at Seelapadi. After the information about the raids spread, DMK cadres gathered in front of the houses in large numbers. While the CRPF personnel guarded the premises, state police personnel were deployed in the localities concerned to maintain the law and order situation. In Chennai, the searches were wound up in the evening, but the ED is yet to issue an official statement on the searches. DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi condemned the ED action and said the DMK and its cadress cannot be scared by the assaults of the central agencies. MDMK general secretary Vaiko also condemned the ED raids and said that the Union govt was misusing central agencies to target opposition leaders for a political motive and as a means to intimidate and stifle their voices. 'The central govt is using the Income Tax and Enforcement Departments to intimidate its opponents and stifle the voice. That is why the raid is being carried out at the house of Periyasamy. This is strongly condemnable,' he said. It may be noted that the Madras high court had recently reversed the order of the Dindigul trial court, which relieved the DMK leader and his family members in the Rs 2 crore disproportionate assets case. The case pertains to the accumulation of assets to the tune of Rs 2 crore between 2006 and 2010 when Periyasamy was the housing minister. While DVAC filed a chargesheet against Periyasamy, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthilkumar and Prabhu, the ED also registered a money-laundering case based on the DVAC FIR and interrogated Periyasamy in 2022. However, the Dindigul trial court acquitted all of them from the case. But the Madras high court set aside the trial court order in April and ordered a fresh trial.
