Russia unveils ‘Kinzhal' interceptor drone to counter low-altitude threats
The new drone, which shares its name with Russia's well-known Kinzhal hypersonic missile, features a mid-wave infrared seeker for thermal guidance and can reach a maximum speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). Its structural components are produced by various local companies.
The unveiling of the Kinzhal at the Innoprom 2025 exhibition suggests a potential shift from experimental research to pre-production, with a focus on domestic sourcing for all core components.
The Kinzhal's design is similar to the FPV-style Yolka interceptor drone previously used by Russian forces. Russia has been developing several interceptor drone models, including the Yolka, which was introduced in May and described as a 'fire-and-forget' kinetic interceptor designed to independently collide with enemy drones.
While Ukraine has expanded its drone programmes to mass deployment, Russia's interceptor drones are still in experimental or limited trial stages, the report said. However, Russian military bloggers and media have reported ongoing design work for high-speed interceptor drones capable of targeting fixed-wing reconnaissance UAVs and long-range munitions.
The development of such systems reflects a broader military-industrial trend driven by lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, where the widespread use of drones by both sides has challenged traditional air defence doctrines.
In response to Russia's use of drones like the Iranian-made Shahed-136 and the Lancet loitering munition, Ukraine has deployed a wide range of its own interceptor drones. These are often integrated into its Clear Sky network, which combines radar detection with ground observers and decentralised drone teams.
According to Ukrainian sources, Kyiv is producing up to 200,000 drones per month, with interceptor variants forming a growing portion of this output.
Globally, other countries are also accelerating the integration of interceptor drones into their multi-layered air defence strategies. The United States has operated Raytheon's Coyote Block 2 interceptor and tested autonomous drones like Anduril's Anvil. In Europe, Latvia's Origin Robotics is developing the high-speed BLAZE interceptor, while companies in Germany and France are also developing autonomous drones for infrastructure protection.

Egypt's Telecom Regulator: 650,000 Mobile Phones Entered Duty-Free with Passengers in 2025
Taarek Refaat Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) confirmed on Sunday that over 650,000 mobile phones have entered the country duty-free alongside travelers since the beginning of the year, under the country's mobile device governance system. The authority clarified that the exemption, allowing one mobile device per traveler to enter the country without customs duties, remains in effect as part of the ongoing pilot phase of a broader telecommunications oversight framework. In an official statement, the NTRA denied social media rumors claiming that previously exempted phones would be retroactively taxed or disabled. 'These claims are unfounded,' the statement read. However, the regulator acknowledged detecting abuse of the exemption policy, revealing that approximately 60,000 devices have had their mobile network access suspended pending further investigation. Through a systematic review of the exemption program, the NTRA uncovered 13,000 devices that had illegally benefited from the duty-free rule in violation of regulatory guidelines. These devices remain blocked as of now. Conversely, around 47,000 suspended phones were found to be legitimately exempt and have since been reactivated after verification procedures. Egypt introduced the exemption policy as part of a national framework to regulate and monitor mobile device imports, reduce smuggling, and ensure fair taxation. The initiative is also designed to curb the proliferation of unregistered devices on local telecom networks. The NTRA emphasized its commitment to periodic audits and enforcement, warning against fraudulent attempts to exploit the system. Further technological upgrades and automated checks are expected as the program moves toward full implementation. Madbouly tours northwestern coast to open AOI Expo, promote desalination-driven agriculture
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly began a tour of Egypt's northwestern coast on Saturday, starting with a visit to development and service projects in New Alamein City. Madbouly explained that the tour aims to follow up on strategic projects designed to enhance the region's investment value and economic potential. He noted that the area's rich tourism, agricultural, and industrial resources are being leveraged through the establishment of new urban communities and greater private sector involvement. As part of his visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) exhibition at North Square Mall in New Alamein, featuring products from ATICO Wood Industries and AOI's electronics factory. Accompanied by AOI Chairperson Mokhtar Abdel Latif, Madbouly toured the 650 sqm showroom, which presents Egyptian-made products under the theme 'Made in Egypt,' including electronic and household appliances, security systems, and modern wooden furnishings. Abdel Latif explained that the exhibition is part of AOI's broader marketing strategy to deliver high-quality, environmentally friendly, locally manufactured products aligned with the latest digital transformation trends. During the visit to AOI's wood products section (ATICO), Madbouly was briefed by Sherif Raafat, Executive Director of ATICO Wood Industries. Raafat showcased the variety of furniture on display and announced a partnership agreement with Romanian company Antares to manufacture office chairs and sofas locally in Egypt. He also highlighted the availability of attractive installment plans in AOI showrooms and a special public lottery for attendees of the opening event to win valuable prizes. While inspecting the exhibition, Madbouly examined several pieces of home and office furniture to check their quality and durability. The exhibition includes televisions, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, fans, microwaves, receivers, LED lighting systems, surveillance cameras, computers, tablets, laptops, and mobile phones. Abdel Latif noted that, to mark the exhibition's launch, all products will be available at discounts of up to 50% for one week. As part of his visit to the Northwestern Coast, the Prime Minister also inspected the Research Pilot Plant for Seawater Desalination in New Alamein City. Madbouly reaffirmed the state's commitment to seawater desalination as a central pillar of sustainable development, emphasizing the importance of applying advanced technologies to boost efficiency and production. He highlighted the significance of ongoing research using desalinated seawater to cultivate various fruits and vegetables, describing it as a step toward maximizing the agricultural potential of coastal areas and expanding arable land to enhance food security. Russia Moves to Ban WhatsApp over National Security Concerns
Taarek Refaat In a major escalation of its digital sovereignty campaign, Russia is preparing to ban WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by U.S.-based Meta, citing national security concerns and its association with "hostile nations." Anton Gorelkin, deputy chairman of the Russian State Duma's Information Technology Committee, stated on Saturday that WhatsApp is on the verge of being added to the country's official blacklist of prohibited applications. His comments, reported by Reuters, reflect a broader push to eliminate foreign software linked to governments that have imposed sanctions on Moscow. Meta has already been designated a "terrorist and extremist organization" in Russia, leading to the blocking of Facebook and Instagram since 2022. The looming ban on WhatsApp follows a recent directive from President Vladimir Putin urging stricter regulations on foreign technology platforms, particularly those from so-called 'unfriendly' states. As part of this initiative, Russia has given tech companies until September 1 to comply with the new national standards or face expulsion from the market. In June, Putin signed a law supporting the development of a state-controlled messaging app integrated with Russian government services. The move is part of a wider effort to foster domestic technological self-sufficiency, especially after a mass exodus of Western firms in the wake of the Ukraine invasion. Gorelkin emphasized that banning WhatsApp would also help bolster the adoption of the new state-backed app, increasing its market share and cementing local alternatives in Russia's digital ecosystem. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
