Bramcote SEND school unveils major expansion plans

BBC News01-07-2025
A school in Nottinghamshire which caters for pupils with special needs has published plans to more than double in size.Foxwood Academy, which currently has about 110 pupils, wants to expand its capacity by 150, using adjacent land where Bramcote Secondary School used to stand.Head teacher James Hutchinson said the spaces were needed to cope with surging demand for SEND places. The £25m plan is out for consultation, with a formal application expected in October and a planned opening date of September 2027.
Foxwood currently has approximately 60 members of staff and caters for students from four to 18 years old.The site of Bramcote Secondary School has been empty since its derelict buildings were demolished after a fire in 2021.The site is also close to Bramcote Leisure Centre and Bramcote Hills Primary school.Mr Hutchinson said: "There is a real need for spaces for children with additional needs in the county, we need to increase provision to meet that need."Currently we are spending around £35m a year, roughly on local council maintained schools and another £35m on independent provision, so that's a lot of money".
'Preparation for adulthood'
The project will create a dedicated secondary school, with the current building becoming solely a primary.Mr Hutchinson said: "This will allow us to focus on powerfully meeting the needs of of the children in the different settings."For example, if you have an educational health care plan, a learning difficulty in Nottinghamshire, your chance of getting paid employment is about 1.5%."So a new build with specially built vocational resources allows us to try and tackle that figure."It also allows us to teach a focussed curriculum around preparation for adulthood."Mr Hutchinson said the bulk of the cost would come from the insurance payout related to the secondary school fire.Details of the exhibition and proposals will remain available for comment until 25 July.

Beat the base rate for three months with this 4.5% fixed-term savings account

Investing and savings platform Prosper is giving savers the chance to beat the base rate for three months with a 4.5 per cent micro-fix. The account is provided by Santander International and comes with a regular interest rate of 3.75 per cent, which Prosper* will boost by 0.75 per cent. If you locked away the minimum of £10,000 within the account, you'd earn around £110 after three months. Last week the Bank of England voted to cut the base rate from 4.25 per cent to 4 per cent. Since then over 20 savings providers have slashed their variable savings rates, according to rates scrutineer Moneyfacts Compare. It's still possible to find rates on savings accounts that are higher than the base rate – but you must keep a close eye on your options. Prosper is an investing and savings platform that allows you to search for a savings account and then open the product that's right for you. Find out more about its 4.5 per cent fixed-term deposit account below. How does this option fare? The account from Santander International available through Prosper* is a three-month fixed-term deposit account. You choose the amount to lock away, which you can't access until the end of the fixed term. The minimum you can deposit is £10,000 and the maximum is £1,000,000. The standard interest rate is 3.75 per cent, which Santander International pays when the account matures. Prosper tops this up by 0.75 per cent, paying the boost to your bank account the week after maturity. This is Money says: With more providers set to decide whether to pass on the base rate cut to savers over the coming weeks, it's worth considering whether to give your savings a short-term boost with this option from Prosper. You need to be prepared to keep your savings stashed away, because you can't access them until the end of the fixed term of mid-November. It's also not an Isa, meaning your savings aren't shielded from tax and so you should keep an eye on whether the interest you earn takes you over your personal savings allowance. However, only interest earned from the underlying 3.75 per cent will be subject to tax. Prosper says that HMRC treats the 0.75 boost as a type of cashback and doesn't regard it as taxable income. You can keep track of the best rates with our regularly updated savings tables. In terms of cash Isas, Chip* currently has the best headline rate, offering 4.7 per cent. This includes a 1.66 per cent bonus for three months. After this the rate plummets to 3.04 per cent, so you should think about transferring after – but it's worth considering as a tax-free, flexible alternative to Prosper's account.

Kingsmill owner agrees to buy Hovis in deal paving the way for Britain's biggest bread brand

Britain's biggest bread brand is on the brink of being created after Kingsmill's owner agreed to buy rival Hovis Group. If Britain's competition watchdog gives the deal the green light, future job cuts could be on the cards, though no details have been announced. The deal would mean Britain's second and third largest bread brands would be merged. Associated British Foods has agreed to buy Hovis from private equity group Endless in a deal thought to be worth around £70million. The deal came after ABF, which owns Primark, launched a review of its strategic options for its Allied Bakeries arm. On Friday, ABF said the deal would result in the merging of the production and distribution operations of the two bakery businesses. The aim of this merging of operations is to cut costs and boost efficiencies, ABF said. 'This transaction will create a UK bakeries business that is both profitable and sustainable over the long term,' ABF chief executive George Weston said. The deal is subject to regulatory approval. It will be scrutinised by the competition authorities given the combined bread market share of Allied Bakeries and Hovis. But the Competition and Markets Authority is under pressure from the government to help support growth. It comes three months after ABF first confirmed talks over a potential deal.
