Pressure mounts as Messi, slumping Inter Miami face CF Montreal at home
Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates entered Wednesday's home game against CF Montreal under intense pressure to live up to lofty expectations and get out of a month-long funk during which they won just one of eight games, conceded 23 goals during that stretch and slipped to seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Coach Javier Mascherano stuck with mostly the same lineup he used for the 3-3 tie on the road against the Philadelphia Union last weekend. In that game, Miami rallied from a 3-1 second-half deficit to salvage a point. It was the third time in a month Inter Miami scored three goals and did not win the match.
The only changes in the lineup were midfielder Fede Redondo replaced injured Yannick Bright and Telasco Segovia, who scored the equalizer in extra time against the Union, replaced defender Tomas 'Toto' Aviles, as Mascherano went with a more attack-minded lineup against Montreal.
The rest of the Miami Starting XI were: goalkeeper Oscar Ustari, right back Ian Fray, center back Gonzalo Lujan, center back Noah Allen, left back Jordi Alba, midfielder Sergio Busquets, winger Tadeo Allende, Messi, and Luis Suarez at center forward.
Suarez, the 38-year-old Uruguayan, has been in a scoring slump this season with just two goals in 11 MLS games after being a Golden Boot finalist last season with 20 goals. Mascherano has been asked in recent weeks about Suarez's poor run of form, but the coach decided to keep him in the starting lineup. Mascherano has said on numerous occasions that even when Suarez doesn't score, he helps the team by organizing attackers and defending.
Asked about Suarez's slump in the leadup to the game, Mascherano said: 'I'm not here to single anyone out. You can do whatever analysis you want, you have that right, that is your job. We try to analyze different situations. We know how important Luis is for the club, in general. The club a year and a half ago decided to go with this project and we have to adapt to that.'
On the bench for Miami Wednesday were: Rocco Rios Novo, Marcelo Weigandt, Aviles, Maxi Falcon, David Martinez, Benja Cremaschi, Fafa Picault, Leo Afonso and Allen Obando.
Inter Miami's recent struggles include five losses and two ties while conceding 23 goals and scoring just 15. The team slipped from second place in the Eastern Conference to seventh, with 23 points from 14 league games.
CF Montreal is in last place in the East with just one victory all season, but Mascherano assured fans the opponent is better than its record and Inter Miami is not taking this game lightly.
Montreal is coming off a 2-2 tie against LAFC and has also had good results against the Crew (1-1), Orlando (0-0), and New York City FC (1-0).
'Despite their position in the standings, if you watched Montreal's games, you saw that in several of their games they deserved better results than what they got,' Mascherano said. 'I don't think it's an opponent we should judge by their record. They played even and gave trouble to Columbus, Philadelphia [2-1 loss], LAFC. They are very physical, like most teams in MLS they have good players in the final third, and we expect a tough opponent.'

Dan Hurley makes Knicks stance clear as rumors swirl about UConn coach's interest
Dan Hurley's future served as the talk of the college basketball world spanning the nearly 3,000 miles from Los Angeles to Storrs, Conn. around this time last year when the Lakers had an opening. The UConn men's basketball coach has no plans of a repeat saga now that the Knicks are searching for their head coach with Tom Thibodeau canned. Advertisement 'Not another summer of that,' Hurley said Tuesday night, per the Hartford Courant. While this is not a definitive 'no,' it's an indication that Hurley does not — at least to start — have a wandering eye toward Madison Square Garden and replacing Thibodeau. UConn sources are also not sweating the possibility of Hurley wanting to leave for Broadway, according to the New Haven Register. There have been rumors about the Knicks being a potential dream destination for the two-time championship coach who grew up in Jersey City and starred for Seton Hall, with that chatter only amplified after he turned down the Lakers' six-year, $70 million offer. Advertisement 3 Dan Hurley indicated he won't be deciding between the Knicks and UConn this summer. AP Hurley signed a six-year, $50 million contract extension with UConn last year that will take him through the 2029 season. The 52-year-old focused on the Huskies' roster for the 2025-26 season rather than discuss whether he'd be a fit to lead several former Villanova stars now wearing orange and blue. Advertisement 3 Tom Thibodeau is out as Knicks coach. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post 'Two days into practice, not everyone is on campus, but we're thrilled with the way we've been able to put it together,' Hurley said Tuesday, per the Courant. One of the selling points for a college job compared to an NBA one is that Hurley is a made man in Connecticut, compared to the brutal pro ranks where coaches are hired to be fired. Follow The Post's coverage of the Knicks' stunning firing of head coach Tom Thibodeau Advertisement Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference finals trip in 25 years and turned the franchise from a laughing stock into a title contender, but not even that could save him. Not every coach wants to inherit that type of pressure. 3 Dan Hurley and his best friend, a referee. Bob Donnan-Imagn Images Hurley, on the other hand, is facing no heat after having a down season by his recent standards in which the Huskies bowed out in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in their quest for a three-peat. If Hurley is not a factor in the race, he could be the second two-time championship coach passing on the Knicks with former Villanova coach Jay Wright reportedly not un-retiring to coach the team. Arkansas coach and former Kentucky leader John Calipari is a possible option, per The Post's Stefan Bondy, due to his connections to Knicks president Leon Rose and front office executive William Wesley.

Suns reportedly hire Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as head coach
Vincent Goodwill joins Dan Patrick to unpack the fallout of Tom Thibodeau's firing, explaining why he believes the Knicks will keep an "open mind" in their search before previewing the NBA Finals. PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns hired Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as their head coach, opting for a young, emerging leader to rebuild a franchise that has regressed over the past few seasons, a person familiar with the search told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the hire hasn't officially been announced. Ott will be the team's fourth head coach in four seasons and replaces Mike Budenholzer, who was fired following a miserable 36-46 season that ended without a trip to the playoffs despite the high-priced trio of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. The 40-year-old Ott has worked for the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and the Cavaliers. He also worked as a video coordinator under Tom Izzo at Michigan State, which is where Suns owner Mat Ishbia played as a walk-on from 1999 to 2003. It remains to be seen if Durant or Beal will be on next season's roster — both could be moved in trades. Booker seems like the only player on the roster who is truly untouchable after 10 seasons in the desert, including four All-Star appearances. Ott and fellow Cavs assistant Johnnie Bryant were the two finalists for the job. Both worked under Kenny Atkinson, helping lead Cleveland to a 64-18 record this season, which was the best record in the NBA's Eastern Conference. Ishbia and general manager Brian Gregory led a lengthy, deliberate search that lasted 1 1/2 months and included more than a dozen candidates. Gregory also has Michigan State ties as a former assistant coach. ESPN first reported the hiring. Ott takes over a franchise that's had a quick rise and fall over the past five years. The Suns made the NBA Finals in 2021 with a core that included Booker, Deandre Ayton, Mikal Bridges, Chris Paul, Cameron Johnson and coach Monty Williams, but lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games. Phoenix had the best record in the NBA the next season before losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the second round. Ishbia blew up that nucleus shortly after purchasing the team in 2023, trading for superstar Kevin Durant, but the Suns lost again in the postseason's second round, this time to the eventual champion Denver Nuggets. Williams was fired following the season, which started the franchise's sideline shuffle. The Suns traded for three-time All-Star Bradley Beal and hired coach Frank Vogel during the ensuing offseason, but the group never seemed to gel. Phoenix was swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening round of the playoffs in 2024, leading to Vogel's firing. Budenholzer replaced Vogel before last season, but the Suns didn't even make it to the play-in tournament in 2025.
