Sun TV Network defends promoter Kalanithi, says all legal obligations met
New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI) A day after reports emerged of former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran accusing his brother of "fraudulent practices" and "misgovernance", the elder sibling Kalanithi-run Sun TV on Friday said the division between the promoter family done 22 years back was in compliance with all legal obligations.
Defending its promoter Kalanithi, Sun TV Network in a regulatory filing said the agreements between the two brothers had been "duly vetted" by "intermediaries" concerned before the company's public issue.
According to reports, Dayanidhi has sent a legal notice to his brother and several others, accusing them of "fraudulent practices" and "misgovernance" in taking control of Sun TV after their father Murasoli Maran's death in 2003.
Dayanidhi, who is also a Lok Sabha member from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has sought to restore the company's shareholding structure to its pre-September 2003 status.
The board of Sun TV Network is led by Kalanithi as Executive Director and Chairperson. His daughter Kavya Kalanithi Maran is also on the south-based broadcaster board.
Kalanithi, as a promoter, owns 75 per cent shareholding in Sun TV Network.
On Friday, Sun TV Network, in its regulatory filing said, "The alleged matter dates back to 22 years when the company was a closely held private limited company."
Defending the promoter, it further stated, "Statements allegedly made in the articles are incorrect, misleading, speculating, defamatory and not supported by facts or law".
"We wish to inform that all acts have been done in accordance with legal obligations and the same had been duly vetted by concerned intermediaries before the public issue of the company," it said.
Moreover, Sun TV Network also said the media reports claiming a rift between the promoter Maran brothers "does not have any bearing on the business of the company or its day-to-day functioning".
Sun TV Network also clarified that it is a "family matter of the promoter" and is "purely personal in nature".
Besides Kalanithi, financial institutions, including mutual funds and insurance companies, own 10.46 per cent of the shareholding of Sun TV and 6.87 per cent by the foreign portfolio investors.
Chennai-based Sun TV Network is among India's leading media conglomerates, having 37 television channels in seven languages, with a reach of more than 140 million households in India.
Besides, it also owns Sun Direct, a DTH (direct-to-home) platform and operates 69 FM radio stations under the brand names -- Suryan FM, RED FM and Magic FM. It also operates three daily newspapers and six magazines.
In addition, Sun TV Network owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise of the Indian Premier League and Sunrisers Eastern Cape of Cricket South Africa's T20 League.
For the 2024-25 financial year, the network's total consolidated income was ₹ 4,712.60 crore, down 1.55 per cent. Its profit after tax was down 11.53 per cent to ₹ 1,703.64 crore, against ₹ 1,925.80 crore a year earlier.

Delhi to soon launch hot-air balloon rides at 2 locations: Check details
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to launch hot-air balloon rides at two landmark venues in the city in a bid to boost tourism and generate additional revenue. Officials confirmed the rides will be introduced at the Commonwealth Games Village complex near Akshardham and the Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar—two expansive sites developed ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games but underutilised in recent years. The locations were selected for their large open spaces and easy accessibility, according to a PTI report. Private operators to run services on revenue-sharing basis The DDA has issued tenders inviting private firms to operate the hot-air balloon services on a revenue-sharing model. According to the tender document: 'These sites will be offered for operation of hot-air ballooning on a revenue-sharing basis. The required area, approximately 60 metres by 60 metres at each site, will be provided to the firm as per mutually agreed timings and days.' Each selected operator will receive a 60-metre square launch area at both sites. The initial licence will be valid for three years, extendable to a maximum of nine years based on performance and public interest. Flexible operating hours, ticket pricing left to operators Under the current proposal, hot-air balloon flights will be allowed up to four hours per day, with the possibility of extending operating hours based on demand. While ticket prices will be set by the private operators, the DDA has asked firms to keep the fares 'reasonable' to ensure broad accessibility. To make the offering commercially viable, operators will also be permitted to display advertisements on the balloons—offering brands a high-visibility promotional opportunity while generating extra revenue. Know the locations: River views, sports heritage, and open skies Commonwealth Games Village (CWG Village): A 100-acre residential complex built for athletes during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, located along the banks of the Yamuna and near Akshardham Temple. Yamuna Sports Complex, Surajmal Vihar: An east Delhi multi-sport facility with large open spaces, also developed in the run-up to the 2010 Games. The initiative is part of the DDA's broader push to revive and monetise legacy infrastructure while offering Delhi residents and tourists a unique aerial view of the city's skyline and riverfront.

Softbank's biggest bet: Masayoshi Son plans trillion-dollar AI hub in Arizona. Details here
SoftBank Group's founder Masayoshi Son is seeking to team up with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to build a trillion-dollar industrial complex in Arizona for manufacturing robots and artificial intelligence. The billionaire aims to build a version of the vast manufacturing hub in China's Shenzhen that would bring back high-tech manufacturing to the US, according to sources known to Bloomberg. The park may comprise production lines for AI-powered industrial robots. Codenamed 'Project Crystal Land', the Arizona complex represents the 67-year-old SoftBank chief's most ambitious attempt in a career that's spanned numerous bet-the-house bids, thousands-fold returns and billions of dollars in losses, said Bloomberg. SoftBank officials are expecting the Taiwanese maker of Nvidia Corp's advanced AI chips to play a prominent role in the project, although the exact plan is not clear. TSMC already plans to invest $165 billion in the US and has started mass production at its first Arizona factory. It is also not clear whether TSMC would be interested, the news report suggests. SoftBank officials have been in touch with federal and state government officials to discuss possible tax breaks for companies building factories or otherwise investing in the industrial park. Son has compiled a list of SoftBank Vision Fund portfolio companies that might take part in the Arizona manufacturing hub. SoftBank-backed startups working on robotics and automation technologies, such as Agile Robots SE may set up production facilities at the industrial complex, said the news agency. The plans' progress highly depends on support from the Trump administration and state officials. While the project may require as much as $1 trillion to execute, the actual scale depends on interest from big technology companies, the news report said. While exploring the Arizona project, Softbank also plans to invest as much as $30 billion into OpenAI. It's also seeding money into the Stargate venture with OpenAI, Oracle and Abu Dhabi's MGX, seeking to put hundreds of billions of dollars into data centres and related infrastructure around the world. Those outlays come as SoftBank's cash stood at $23 billion at the end of March. The Tokyo-based company also raised around $4.8 billion this month by selling its stake in T-Mobile US. The Softbank founder's multiple investments in projects that proceed in fits and starts make it difficult to determine how committed he is to any one venture, said the news agency The billionaire is often goaded by the desire to boost SoftBank's stock price and repay retail investors who've held onto the company's shares from before the dot-com boom and bust. Many investors have waited for decades for the stock to recover, said sources known to Bloomberg. If Son's primary motivation is to clear the way for AI, it may be more cost-efficient to encourage partnerships that link manufacturing expertise with that of AI engineers and specialists in fields from medicine to robotics, and incubating smaller companies, Melissa Otto, the head of research at Visible Alpha told Bloomberg, But pouring cash into data centres may help lower the cost of developing AI applications and spur broader adoption, she said. 'He's a long-term thinker, and he takes risks,' Otto said. 'It's just too early to tell.'

Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM warns of dissolving assembly; halts budget to resist ‘conspiracy' against Imran Khan; targets Centre
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Friday issued a stern warning that he may dissolve the provincial assembly if the federal government attempts to destabilise the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led coalition in the province. In a video message, Gandapur asserted that he holds the constitutional power to dissolve the assembly at any time. The warning comes amid increasing political friction between the federal and provincial governments. Gandapur suspended implementation of the recently passed provincial budget and instructed lawmakers not to submit any cut motions during Friday's session. He added that a new strategy would be announced on Monday. 'If we don't pass the budget, the federal government could take control of the province under the pretext of a financial emergency,' Gandapur said, accusing Islamabad of conspiring to topple his government. He also lashed out at the federal authorities for what he described as 'unjust treatment' of the province following the May 9, 2023, incidents. He alleged that the public mandate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was stolen in the aftermath. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AdTab, un delicioso comprimido antiparasitario Adtab Encuéntralo Undo 'Our leader was unjustly jailed, and the way we were treated after May 9, followed by the theft of our mandate, is unacceptable. He faces multiple cases, including charges of inciting attacks on military and government buildings following his arrest by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court premises. Gandapur also criticised the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor for allegedly violating constitutional responsibilities. 'It is the constitutional duty of the governor to call the budget session, but he failed to do so,' he said. He further added, 'Moreover, our party's founding chairman has a legal and moral right to be consulted on the budget, but he has been denied access.' Gandapur's remarks highlight rising tensions between the provincial and federal leadership, amid concerns of deepening political instability in Pakistan.
