Thiruvananthapuram airport may chargeF-35 jet parking fee

Time of India5 hours ago

T'puram: The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport will now calculate a parking fee for the British Royal Navy F-35 fighter jet as it continues to be grounded following a hydraulic snag.
Airport sources, however, said they are yet to calculate the amount that needs to be charged for the jet, which has been stranded for close to 10 days. It is parked in Bay 4, used by VIP aircraft. It is not hampering aircraft movement at the airport because the flight traffic is low.
Usually, the airport operator charges a parking fee based on the aircraft's weight. But the fighter jet is lightweight and it is not a scheduled flight.
So the same yardstick may not be applicable in this case. Nevertheless, the authorities may have a bill which the Union govt may pay because it is a defence aircraft.
A team of engineers from the UK and the US will arrive soon to rectify the snag. If it is not successful, arrangements may have to be made to move the jet out using a freighter plane.
A British High Commission spokesperson said: "We are working to repair the UK F-35B at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport as quickly as possible.

We thank the Indian authorities for their continued support."
There was a move to shift the jet to the hangar as it may have to be here for a some more time, but British Navy authorities were reportedly not in favour of it.
This is the first time that the US-made, most sophisticated fighter jet is stranded in a foreign country. It is part of the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales. The aircraft carrier carried out at-sea exercises along with the Indian Navy recently.
The F-35 is renowned for its short take-off and vertical landing capabilities, allowing it to operate from aircraft carriers and short runways.

Toyota Kirloskar, Ohmium to manufacture green hydrogen power solutions

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has entered into a strategic collaboration with Ohmium , a manufacturer of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers, to co-develop green hydrogen-based power solutions aimed at supporting India's energy transition and long-term decarbonisation goals . The partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), brings together TKM's expertise in fuel cell systems and system integration with Ohmium's modular and scalable PEM electrolyser technology, which is locally manufactured in India. The two companies will jointly assess the feasibility of hydrogen-powered microgrid solutions intended for diverse applications — from data centres to remote areas with environmental constraints. As part of the initiative, TKM will provide fuel cell modules, system integration, and technical support, while Ohmium will lead the design, development, and performance evaluation of the prototype microgrid. This initiative aligns with the Indian government's National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 to build a robust domestic hydrogen economy , promote local investment, and drive innovation for energy self-reliance. Self-reliant and carbon-neutral India 'Hydrogen, as a clean and renewable energy source, is regarded as the fuel of the future — a key to building a self-reliant and carbon-neutral India,' said Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. 'It is particularly encouraging to witness corporations and technology pioneers actively contributing to the development of scalable, indigenous hydrogen solutions. I commend Toyota and Ohmium for their efforts in advancing cleaner energy options through hydrogen-led capabilities, aligned with the ' Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan '.' Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, added, 'Strategic collaborations such as this between Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Ohmium have the potential to significantly accelerate progress toward a hydrogen-powered green energy future.' Scalable green energy solutions Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Minister of Industries, Food & Supplies, Environment, Forest and Wildlife, Government of NCT of Delhi, said, 'This collaboration is a significant step forward — combining global innovation and local expertise to co-create scalable green energy solutions.' This partnership builds on Toyota's ongoing hydrogen initiatives in India. In 2022, TKM introduced the Toyota Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) as part of a demonstration project with the International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT). The project aimed to test real-world performance, raise awareness, and contribute to developing India's hydrogen ecosystem. TKM has also collaborated with the Government of Kerala on an FCEV feasibility study and signed an MoU with Ashok Leyland in early 2023 to supply fuel cell modules for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle prototypes. Beyond clean mobility 'At Toyota, our commitment to a carbon-neutral future extends beyond clean mobility. Green hydrogen is a vital part of this vision — not only for transportation but also for production, distribution, and diverse end-use applications,' said Manasi Tata, Vice Chairperson, Toyota Kirloskar Motor. 'Through this collaboration with an innovative PEM technology player like Ohmium, we are advancing hydrogen applications and reinforcing our support for the country's 'Make in India' initiative.' Ahmad Chatila, Chair of Ohmium's Board, said, 'We are privileged to collaborate with Toyota Kirloskar Motor to integrate our locally manufactured electrolyser technology with their advanced fuel cell systems. This supports India's hydrogen economy goals and our commitment to a greener future with cleaner air, better public health, and resilient infrastructure.' Swapnesh R. Maru, Deputy Managing Director – Corporate Planning and Green Field Project at TKM, added, 'Our collaboration with Ohmium goes 'Beyond Mobility' — it reflects a shared commitment to creating a hydrogen-powered India that is self-reliant, resilient, inclusive, and future-ready. Guided by our deep respect for the planet, we see hydrogen not just as a fuel, but as a catalyst for sustainability across mobility, energy, and industry.' In August 2023, TKM also showcased the world's first BS6 (Stage II) Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle prototype. Built on the Innova Hycross platform, the vehicle combines a strong hybrid electric powertrain with high ethanol-blend capability — offering improved fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. This development is part of Toyota's multi-pathway approach to decarbonisation, which includes hydrogen, hybrid, and biofuel technologies. With a growing portfolio of hydrogen-focused initiatives — from the Mirai FCEV demonstration to commercial fuel cell module supply, and now this clean energy collaboration — TKM continues to deepen its commitment to a hydrogen-powered future that aligns with India's renewable energy ambitions and industrial sustainability goals.

ETAuto Tech Summit 2025: India's automotive tech dreams need a bold R&D reset, industry leaders at the event

The message from the ETAuto Tech Summit 2025 in Bengaluru was loud and clear: if India wants to position itself as a global hub for automotive technologies, it must significantly step up its R&D investments and build a deep, future-ready talent pool. Industry stalwarts expressed concern over India's lagging progress and emphasised the urgent need to capitalise on the growing opportunities already unfolding within the country. 'R&D spending is key to long-term growth. One of our biggest misses has been underutilising opportunities to create IP, drive deep-tech innovation, and foster a strong research culture,' said Kishor Patil , Chairman, NASSCOM ER&D Council , MD and CEO, KPIT Technologies. He added that global growth trends clearly correlate with high R&D expenditure, and it is time for Indian OEMs to move beyond their acquisition mindset and instead embrace grassroots innovation to build a solid base of patented technologies and indigenous products. Drawing comparisons with innovation-driven nations like the US and China, Patil pointed out that those countries follow a well-structured, multi-pronged approach - government-led identification of key focus areas, direct project allocation to OEMs, strong academia-industry ties, and active support for startups. 'India is only beginning to build this ecosystem,' he said. 'We need to treat this as a fire-fighting exercise if we intend to close the gap.' The numbers back his concern. India's R&D investment in the automotive sector stands at just 0.65per cent of GDP, significantly behind China (2.56per cent ), the US (3.59per cent ), Japan (3.41per cent ), and Germany (3.13per cent ). 'We have just 4,552 global patents, while China has 70,160 and the US 54,087,' Patil said. India currently ranks 39th on the Global Innovation Index 2024, while China sits at 11th. Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), echoed the call for change. 'We must focus on building 'Brand India' by developing technologies indigenously, instead of always looking to acquire them abroad,' he said. 'We have fallen behind in R&D, now is the time to realign and push forward with renewed intent.' Adding further perspective, Dr. Reji Mathai, Director, ARAI, emphasised the need for localised solutions. 'Increasing the localisation of components is critical,' he said. 'We also need India-specific datasets and software solutions tailored to real-world use cases in the country.' Dr. Andy Palmer, global automotive veteran and Chairman, Inobat Auto, captured the shifting paradigm, 'The race in the automotive world today is for technology leadership over market share.' Reflecting on the current geopolitical landscape, he highlighted the importance of strategic alliances and self-reliance. 'India must act now to protect and strengthen its supply chains.'
