
Toyota Kirloskar, Ohmium to manufacture green hydrogen power solutions

Motor (TKM) has entered into a strategic collaboration with
Ohmium
, a manufacturer of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers, to co-develop green hydrogen-based power solutions aimed at supporting India's energy transition and long-term
decarbonisation goals
.
The partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), brings together TKM's expertise in fuel cell systems and system integration with Ohmium's modular and scalable PEM electrolyser technology, which is locally manufactured in India. The two companies will jointly assess the feasibility of
hydrogen-powered microgrid
solutions intended for diverse applications — from data centres to remote areas with environmental constraints.
As part of the initiative, TKM will provide fuel cell modules, system integration, and technical support, while Ohmium will lead the design, development, and performance evaluation of the prototype microgrid.
This initiative aligns with the Indian government's National
Green Hydrogen
Mission, launched in 2023 to build a robust domestic
hydrogen economy
, promote local investment, and drive innovation for energy self-reliance.

Scalable green energy solutions

This partnership builds on Toyota's ongoing hydrogen initiatives in India. In 2022, TKM introduced the
Toyota Mirai
fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) as part of a demonstration project with the International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT). The project aimed to test real-world performance, raise awareness, and contribute to developing India's hydrogen ecosystem.
TKM has also collaborated with the Government of Kerala on an FCEV feasibility study and signed an MoU with Ashok Leyland in early 2023 to supply fuel cell modules for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle prototypes.
Beyond clean mobility

In August 2023, TKM also showcased the world's first BS6 (Stage II) Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle prototype. Built on the Innova Hycross platform, the vehicle combines a strong hybrid electric powertrain with high ethanol-blend capability — offering improved fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. This development is part of Toyota's multi-pathway approach to decarbonisation, which includes hydrogen, hybrid, and biofuel technologies.
With a growing portfolio of hydrogen-focused initiatives — from the Mirai FCEV demonstration to commercial fuel cell module supply, and now this clean energy collaboration — TKM continues to deepen its commitment to a hydrogen-powered future that aligns with India's renewable energy ambitions and industrial sustainability goals.

Indian banks still prefer funding fossil fuels project amid rising risk to investment: Report
NEW DELHI: Even as India aggressively pushes for a clean energy transition, Indian banks have substantially financed fossil fuel and coal-fired power projects—totalling approximately USD 29 billion between 2016 and 2023—which could hinder and complicate the path to achieving net-zero emissions, states a recent report. Prepared by Climate Risk Horizon, a Bangalore-based non-profit organisation that monitors climate-related risks for investors, the report highlights that the State Bank of India (SBI) and private lenders such as Axis Bank and ICICI Bank were among the top financiers of coal. Titled 'Stuck in the Past: Coal Ties Hinder Indian Banks' Energy Transition' the report indicates that India's leading banks invested around USD 29 billion in coal during the specified period. Of this amount, approximately USD 15.2 billion was provided as coal loans, while USD 13.5 billion was allocated to coal underwriting services Further segregating the data, the analysis shows that public banks provided roughly 75% of the coal loans while private banks financed roughly 83% of the total underwriting. According to the report, over these eight years, the amount of coal loans fluctuated significantly. Still, coal underwriting by Indian banks remained relatively stable with an average of USD 1.7 billion per year. Underwriting service is a process of mitigating risk for financial transactions by financial institutions by guaranteeing repayment in case of damage or financial loss.
