Penang water supply 83pc restored amid scheduled outage
GEORGE TOWN: Penang's water supply has been restored to 83 per cent of affected areas as of 6pm today, following a scheduled supply interruption that began on Friday night and is expected to be fully restored tomorrow.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reported full recovery in three districts, namely Seberang Perai Utara (SPU), Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) and Timur Laut. Seberang Perai Selatan has seen 90 per cent restoration, while Barat Daya remains at 38 per cent.
"It is expected that full restoration can be achieved by early tomorrow. Barat Daya is expected to catch up within hours due to improved preparation, although technical issues must also be taken into consideration," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after attending the 2025 Aidilfitri Open House hosted by the Penang Muslim League and the Penang Muslim Association, alongside Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and his wife, Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Noor.
Chow noted that maintaining reservoir water levels during the disruption allowed for quicker restoration compared to previous incidents, where depleted reservoirs delayed recovery.
"The experience from previous disruptions had been used to improve the system, ensuring a smoother water restoration process this time around," he added.
The scheduled cut, affecting 341,708 accounts across five districts, is part of an RM25 million upgrade at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (LRA) involving 23 projects, aimed at enhancing service for some 465,000 users. - BERNAMA

He cited concerns over kiosks costing up to RM25,000 each, many of which are located in remote and rarely frequented areas, and questioned the transparency of the tender process. Tan also criticised leaders from Miri Democratic Action Party (DAP) for remaining silent during initial calls for accountability, only to later shift blame to local councils. 'The truth is, this project was fully initiated and managed by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Malaysia, under a DAP minister. Local authorities had no decision-making power, only implementation role,' he said. 'For Miri DAP to point fingers at the local level while shielding their own party colleague in Putrajaya is not only dishonest, it is a betrayal of public trust.' He went on to accuse DAP of engaging in 'termite-style destruction', portraying themselves as champions of accountability in public while quietly serving the interests of political allies in Peninsular Malaysia. Tan added that the failure of the MyKiosk project was not limited to Sarawak, citing similar issues in Pakatan Harapan-governed states such as Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan where kiosks have reportedly been left empty and underutilised. 'If even these states cannot make the project work, how can they blame local authorities here in Sarawak?' he questioned. Tan urged the federal government to carry out a full audit of project expenditures, contractor appointments, site selection processes, and actual kiosk usage data ― and to release the findings to the public. 'Taxpayer money has been wasted. The people deserve answers, not excuses,' he stressed. Mutiara LRT issues settled, physical work to begin
All outstanding issues between the federal and Penang governments regarding the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) have been resolved amicably. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said he chaired a meeting with Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at his ministry in Putrajaya last month and resolved outstanding issues, including the release letter from the state government.

[UPDATED] KL Tower tussle: Court dismisses contempt bid by ex-operator
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today dismissed a legal bid by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB) and former KL Tower operator Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd to start contempt proceedings against Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and several others. Judge Roz Mawar Rozain made the ruling after finding that the applicants had failed to establish a prima facie case of contempt against the respondents. The two companies filed contempt proceedings against eight individuals for allegedly disrupting the administration of justice amid ongoing legal proceedings. The eight are – Federal Land Commissioner Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain; Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman; Lim Seong Hai Capital Berhad (LSH) chairman Tan Sri Lim Keng Cheng; LSH chief executive Khairil Faizal Othman; Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; administrative services division secretary Harun Ali; and senior division secretary (management) Mazlan Abd Mutalib. The court also found no merit in the plaintiff's claim that the authorities had wrongfully entered its property after the contract with the government ended on March 31, regardless of how forceful the actions were. "This court is not satisfied that a prima facie case has been established to warrant leave for contempt proceedings to be granted," she said. Roz Mawar awarded RM15,000 in cost to Fahmi and RM10,000 in cost to the other respondents. Meanwhile, the court also dismissed the plaintiffs' application for an interim injunction to stop Fahmi and the government from granting the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, ruling that the matter had become academic. On March 27, the plaintiffs filed a RM1 billion suit against Fahmi and the new KL Tower concessionaire following the termination of the management agreement. In a statement, MKLSB managing director Datuk Abdul Hamid Shaikh said the injunction aims to maintain the current status quo until the dispute is fully resolved in court. He said that in 2022, Hydroshoppe was invited by the Communications Ministry to become a strategic partner in revitalising MKLSB's operations and ensuring the tower's continued management and maintenance. Abdul Hamid claimed that despite multiple attempts to resolve the matter amicably, the ministry and the new concessionaire have refused to acknowledge the 2022 agreement, leaving MKLSB and Hydroshoppe facing financial and operational uncertainty. He claimed that outstanding payments amounting to RM25 million for maintenance and operational services remain unpaid, and have added further financial strain, MKLSB has managed and maintained KL Tower for nearly 30 years.
