Japanese Startup Helical Fusion Raises $15 Million To Build 'Another Sun' On Earth — Promises 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy By 2030s
In an effort to advance fusion-based clean energy, Tokyo-based Helical Fusion last month it raised $15 million in Series A funding to accelerate development of the world's first steady-state net power fusion plant, a reactor that the firm's CEO calls "another sun" on Earth. The funding brings Helical Fusion's total capital, including grants and loans, to $35 million, fueling its Helix Program, a plan to deliver continuous, carbon-free electricity in the 2030s. The company's approach is based on the stellarator, a magnetic confinement device capable of maintaining plasma stability without the downtime of other fusion methods. According to the company, analysts forecast the fusion energy market could be worth $550 billion annually by mid-century, if technical and economic barriers are overcome. Helical Fusion's Series A round drew participation from 21 investors, including SBI Investment, Keio Innovation Initiative, KDDI Green Partners Fund, Daiwa House Ventures, and Toyoda Gosei, along with public financial institutions. The funding shows growing interest across Asia in competing in the global race to commercialize fusion technology. Helican Fusion CEO Takaya Taguchi said the company's goal is to create "another sun" on Earth, calling it "the ultimate step in humanity's energy journey" and a potential path to "true energy independence for the first time in history." Trending: 'Scrolling To UBI' — Deloitte's #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones. You can Helical Fusion Says Its Stellarator Could Outperform Other Fusion Designs Helical Fusion says its stellarator design uses intricately shaped magnetic coils to confine superheated plasma, enabling inherently stable, continuous operation. This contrasts with tokamak and laser-based systems, which operate in pulses and require frequent restarts. The technology builds on nearly 70 years of research at Japan's National Institute for Fusion Science, home to the Large Helical Device, one of the world's most advanced stellarator facilities. By leveraging this scientific foundation and Japan's manufacturing expertise, Helical Fusion aims to deliver the first commercially viable stellarator for electricity generation. The Helix Program will begin with Helix Haruka, an intermediate system for component validation, before scaling to Helix Kanata, the flagship plant designed for 24/7 carbon-free power output. "When we consider what's realistically achievable with today's technology, we are sure that we are the one. Our technology will be an invaluable asset not just for Asia, but for humanity," Taguchi said in the Earth's Cities to Space Exploration Helical Fusion says its technology could power not only cities but also long-duration space missions and lunar infrastructure in the decades ahead. Fusion energy offers a unique advantage: one gram of fuel could produce as much energy as eight tons of oil, without long-lived radioactive waste or harmful emissions. The company is working with industrial partners to develop key components such as high-temperature superconducting magnets and liquid metal blankets, both critical to commercial fusion viability. Taguchi said Helical Fusion is seeking partners "to pioneer a new global industry" and "lead the world into a more sustainable future." Stoke Space Rebrands Hardware Engineering Platform as Boltline, Reports 2x Revenue in First Half of Fiscal Year
KENT, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Stoke Space, the company building the world's first fully and rapidly reusable rockets, today announced that its cloud-based hardware engineering platform, previously known as Fusion, is now Boltline. The rebrand reflects Boltline's position as the only purpose-built, end-to-end, cloud-based engineering toolset designed to streamline hardware development from design to end-of-life. Alongside the rebrand, Stoke Space reported strong growth, with Boltline achieving 2x revenue in the first six months of the current fiscal year, driven by adoption across industries. If your part fails, the hardware fails. If your part can't be made, the part is late. If the factory doesn't have throughput, you are late. If your vendor is late, you are late. If you are late, the company is late. The company also disclosed a previously closed investment from Woven Capital, Toyota's growth-stage corporate venture fund, finalized in December 2024. This funding is accelerating Boltline's product development and commercial expansion, empowering hardware teams to build faster and with greater confidence. 'Boltline solves a fundamental challenge for hardware teams: moving fast without sacrificing quality,' said Michiko Kato, Partner at Woven Capital. 'We're excited by its potential to reimagine the hardware development process, accelerating workflows while preserving traceability. With full visibility from cradle to grave, Boltline brings tremendous value to teams navigating complex hardware development cycles. We're proud to back Stoke Space and support Boltline as it scales a solution that empowers faster, smarter, and more transparent hardware development.' Born from Friction, Built for Builders Born from the need to revolutionize hardware development, Boltline unifies complex processes into a single, powerful platform, slashing costs and accelerating innovation across industries. 'Stoke didn't set out to build software. We set out to build hardware, and the tools got in our way,' said Brent Bradbury, Head of Business at Boltline. 'While we were still in early prototyping, it became clear we needed a unified system to manage engineering and production, one that offered traceability, repeatability, and audit readiness. Boltline's 2x revenue growth this fiscal year shows it's meeting a critical need for teams beyond aerospace.' Boltline is now adopted across industries where hardware complexity meets execution urgency, including aerospace, defense, climate tech, biotech, and advanced manufacturing. 'We saw in Boltline a kindred spirit of high-cadence engineering that is challenging the boundaries of what's possible in space,' said Jack '2fish' Fischer, SVP of Production and Operations at Intuitive Machines. Expired temp tags about to be a thing of the past in Missouri
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri drivers will see a multitude of changes within the next two years, including the discontinuance of temporary tags. This comes after the passage of Senate Bill 28, which will take effect on Aug. 28, but the change in paying vehicle sales tax will be implemented once the second phase of the Department of Revenue's new FUSION (Fifty Unique Systems In One Nexus) system is operational. Parkville man charged in connection with 2-month-old son's death Once the system is in place, vehicle buyers in Missouri will be required to pay sales tax at the point of the sale when they purchase through a dealership. If the car is purchased privately, buyers will continue to take their bill of sale to any Missouri license office to pay sales tax. Once the purchase is complete in both scenarios, buyers will get a paper copy of their new license plate and a permanent metal plate with the same number configuration will be mailed to the buyer. Buyers will no longer receiver have the option of getting a temporary tag. 'This change to the way we collect sales tax will eliminate temporary license tags which rob the state of millions of dollars each year because of drivers who never pay their sales tax,' said Missouri Director of Revenue Trish Vincent. 'Though the law goes into effect on August 28, the sales tax changes cannot take effect until our new FUSION system is up and running.' The purpose of FUSION is to combine older mainframe systems and software applications that can no longer communicate with each other into one core system that will significantly increase speed and efficiency in performing motor vehicle and driver licensing functions. Retired Olathe police detective killed in weekend motorcycle crash The first phase was focused on driver licensing and implemented on Nov. 12, 2024. Until FUSION is fully operational, the current sales tax collection process will remain in effect for both dealerships and private vehicle purchases. 'This new law affects both the seller and the buyer,' Vincent said. 'We are going to work with dealers to get everyone trained on the new system and prepared to collect sales tax. Buyers will need to be ready to pay the full sales tax amount at the time of purchase.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
