Live blog: What's happening at the Dolphins-Lions joint practice on Wednesday

Miami Herald3 days ago
News, notes and observations from the Dolphins' joint practice in Detroit on Wednesday: (Keep checking back for updates at the top.)
11:10 update: All this is 11 on 11 work: Jared Goff connected with Amon Ra St. Brown for 15 yards, beating Ethan Bonner. Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs then bolted for 10 yards.... Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks forced a fumble by Lions running back David Montgomery, who recovered it. Chop Robinson was injured on the play; it's too soon to know how severe.
11:07 update: Dolphins linebackers Derrick McLendon and Quinton Bell and Grayson Murphy easily won their 1 on 1 reps against Lions offensive linemen.... Chop Robinson lost another rep against Penei Sewell.
11:06 update: More 7 on 7s: Lions Pro Bowl receiver Amon St. Brown beat Cornell Armstrong for a long touchdown. ... Tagovailoa threw a pass that Julian Hill dropped and then overthrew Nick Westbrook-Ikhine in 7 on 7s... Zach Wilson, shaking off the two interceptions, completed two downfield passes, including one to AJ Henning... Dee Eskridge and Malik Washington both had receptions.
11:05 a.m. update: More 1 on 1 work: Dolphins rookie defensive lineman Kenneth Grant drove back Lions rookie lineman Tate Ratledge. But Lions Pro Bowl offensive lineman Penei Sewell easily handled Dolphins edge rusher Chop Robinson in their duel.
11:03 update: Zach Wilson was intercepted twice in 7 on 7 drills. One was a batted pass that went straight in the air; the other was underthrown and Nick Whiteside jumped to snag it.
11 a.m. update: In 7 on 7 action, Dolphins linebacker Willie Gay and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick stopped Lions tight end Sam LaPorta for a short gain... Tua Tagovailoa connected with De'Von Achane on the sideline.
10:55 a.m. update: Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown torched cornerback Jack Jones in 1 on 1 matchups involving a quarterback, receiver and defensive back. Then he made a sideline catch against Jones and then beat Jones deep. What a debacle for Jones.
Dolphins tight end Julian Hill beat Detroit's Grant Stuard - who talked some smack about the Dolphins this week - over the top in 1 on 1 drills....
Rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr., who didn't allow a completion on either target against him in the Chicago game, had excellent coverage on Lions receiver Ronnie Bell.
10:50 a.m update.: Several Dolphins aren't practicing -- linebackers Jaelan Phillips (undisclosed; Dolphins have suggested it isn't serious) and Mo Kamara (concussion protocol); right tackle Austin Jackson (lower leg; expected back by Sept. 7 opener at Colts); safety Ashtyn Davis (out indefinitely with a leg injury); fullback Alec Ingold (concussion protocol) and offensive linemen Andrew Meyer (not close to returning) and Kion Smith (undisclosed) and Bayron Matos.
Safety Elijah Campbell returned to practice after exiting the Chicago game with an injury.
Claude Smalls II reported from suburban Detroit. Barry Jackson reported from an office.

Buffalo Bills, running back James Cook agree to 4-year, $48M extension

Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The Buffalo Bills agreed to a four-year, $48 million contract extension with James Cook, the Pro Bowl running back confirmed Wednesday on social media. The pact includes $30 million guaranteed, the most paid to a running back in the last five years. Cook, 25, was entering the final year of his rookie contract. The fourth-year running back totaled a career-high 1,567 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns over 17 games in 2023. He totaled 1,267 yards from scrimmage and scored 18 times, including a league-high and franchise record-tying 16 rushing touchdowns, over 16 starts in 2024. Cook was in full uniform and a full participant in practice Tuesday, ending a four-day hold-in. He also missed the Bills' first preseason game. The Bills will participate in a joint practice with the Chicago Bears on Friday in Chicago, and the Bears will host the Bills in their second preseason game at 8 p.m. EDT Sunday in Chicago. They will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their preseason finale Aug. 23 in Tampa, Fla. Seahawks Already Expected to Dump Sam Darnold for Explosive Replacement

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Seattle Seahawks may have found their quarterback of the future this offseason, signing Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract in free agency. The deal followed Darnold's breakout campaign with the Minnesota Vikings in which he threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 66.2 percent of his passes and registering a 102.5 passer rating. That was enough to get Darnold a Pro Bowl appearance. More news: Insider Reveals Bad News for 49ers' Critical Defender What a turnaround it was for the No. 3 overall pick, who wasted away on the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers for the first five seasons of his career and then served as a backup with the San Francisco 49ers for one year before joining the Vikings. That being said, Darnold still has his fair share of doubters, especially after a rather rough showing in Minnesota's Wild Card Round playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams. ESPN's Seth Walder clearly does not think all that highly of Darnold and is expecting the Seahawks to have a different player under center as soon as 2027. As a matter of fact, Walder is predicting Seattle to even make it all the way to the Super Bowl that season ... sans Darnold. Photo by"Led by second-year star quarterback LaNorris Sellers, along with a top-five defense, the Seahawks will reach the Super Bowl ... but will lose," Walder wrote. "The days of [Geno] Smith and Darnold will be ancient history by 2027." Sellers is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks off the board in the 2026 NFL Draft. The University of South Carolina star threw for 2,534 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 65.6 percent of his passes in 2024. He also rushed for 674 yards and seven scores, so unlike the more traditional Darnold, Sellers is a serious dual threat. Many feel that Darnold was merely a product of Justin Jefferson in Minnesota, not to mention the fact that he had weapons like Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson and Aaron Jones at his disposal last season. More news: Saints Could Cut Ties With Former Chiefs Super Bowl Champion We're about to find out if Darnold is for real in a few weeks. That being said, the USC product does have some solid playmakers available to him in Seattle, most notably in the form of wide receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp. Rookie receivers Tory Horton and Ricky White III could be sleepers, as well. But does Darnold have enough support around him to replicate his 2024 campaign? Or is he doomed to failure in the Pacific Northwest? If it's the latter, perhaps Sellers really will be on his way to the Seahawks sooner than we think. For more on the Seahawks and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Jerry Jones was surprised Netflix omitted the Troy Aikman/Steve Walsh storyline

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has a note or two for Netflix. In an interview with Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, Jones expressed surprise over the decision of producers of the soon-to-be-released Cowboys documentary to overlook one specific aspect of the formation of the Cowboys team that won three Super Bowls in the 1990s. Jones expected the eight-part series to address the team's decision to use a first-round pick in the 1989 supplemental draft on Miami quarterback Steve Walsh, weeks after investing the first overall pick in the 1989 draft on UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman. The tension sparked by the selection of Walsh was, per Jones, 'the most trying time of all and I was surprised they missed that.' It really was a battle. In September 1990, Walsh was traded to the Saints. He appeared in 80 regular-season games with 38 starts, but he never achieved anything close to the success Aikman enjoyed. Walsh finished with 7,785 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns, 50 interceptions, and a passer rating of 66.4. For the Cowboys, it ended up being a footnote. But there's an interesting alternate reality in which Walsh had become the starter. Would the Cowboys have won three Super Bowls? Would they have won even one? And what would Aikman have become if he'd been traded to the Saints a year later?
