Tang Jie-Ee Wei reunite in style with Singapore Open win
The world No. 4 overcame Presley Smith-Jennie Gai of the United States 21-18, 21-15, capping a memorable day where they also reclaimed the national No. 1 ranking.
Their rise comes as compatriots Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai slipped two spots from world No. 3 in the latest rankings.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who briefly parted ways after the All England, patched up and reunited for the Sudirman Cup last month, where Malaysia reached the quarter-finals.
However, they tried out with different partners again at recent Thailand Open and Malaysia Masters.
Meanwhile, Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien came agonisingly close to a major upset before narrowly going down 19-21, 21-19, 22-20 to Thai world No. 8 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran - the same opponents who ousted them at the Malaysia Masters last week.

Justin continues strong run at Macau Open
KUALA LUMPUR: Justin Hoh continued his fine run at the Macau Open by beating India's seventh seed Ayush Shetty 21-18, 21-16 to book his spot in the men's singles quarter-finals on Thursday. The world No. 45 Malaysian extended his head-to-head record against world No. 31 Ayush to 3-2. It marks only the third time Justin has reached the last eight of a World Tour Super 300 or higher event, having previously made it this far at the Taiwan Open in 2023 and 2024. The 21-year-old will next face either Thailand's former world championship bronze medallist Kantaphon Wangcharoen or Singapore's Jason Teh, with his sights firmly set on a breakthrough semi-final appearance. There was also cheer in the mixed doubles where professional pair Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing pulled off an upset against world No. 18 Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto of India. Making their World Tour debut as a pair, Jimmy-Pei Jing recovered from a game down to prevail 19-21, 21-13, 21-18 and advance to the last eight. They will next take on second seeds Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi of China. Jimmy-Pei Jing, who first joined forces in March, have reached three finals on the satellite circuit — the Vietnam International Challenge, Thailand International Series and St Denis Reunion Open — and will be eyeing a career-best outing in Macau. For Pei Jing, Macau holds fond memories — she was a semi-finalist at the same tournament in 2016 with her now-retired partner Tan Kian Meng. She will also be hoping for another strong result before heading to Paris later this month, where she will serve as a sparring partner to the French national team in preparation for the World Championships from Aug 25–31.

Tze Yong upbeat as rehab continues in Qatar
KUALA LUMPUR: National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong is staying positive as he continues his rehabilitation in Qatar following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery earlier this month. The 25-year-old, who had only just returned to action following a 13-month layoff, sustained another setback at the Malaysia Masters in May and has since been undergoing post-op recovery at the world-renowned Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha. While no fixed return date has been set, national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen shared that Tze Yong has been responding well to the initial phase of rehab. "I've spoken to him and he's still upbeat," said Jonassen. "Obviously, it's a long journey he's on, but my focus remains the same — give him the best opportunity to return to competitive sport by being supportive. "He's still in Qatar, and I know from the physio that he's putting in the work on the areas that he can. I can't wait to get him back here, maybe not on a daily basis, but at least to have him in our training environment, even if it's just in the gym. "From what I understand, the process is going well and he's in good spirit. And when you have to do a long rehab, staying positive is the key to everything." Tze Yong, who posted a short video of himself doing light drills earlier this week, is expected to remain in Doha for several more weeks under expert supervision. When asked if a tentative timeline has been set for his return to Kuala Lumpur, Jonassen said: "That is up to the doctors. They decide when they feel he's ready, and we will follow the advice of the experts." Tze Yong's latest setback came just four tournaments into his return from back-to-back surgeries. Once ranked as high as world No. 14, he has now slipped to No. 191 — and is no longer eligible for a protected ranking. His long road back will likely rule him out for the remainder of the 2025 season, with hopes pinned on a full recovery by mid-2026.

Justin off to winning start in Macau
KUALA LUMPUR: Rising men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh got off on the right foot at the Macau Open on Wednesday, posting a morale-boosting win to kickstart his campaign. The world No. 45 was in control throughout as he brushed aside India's Sathish Kumar Karunakaran 21-12, 21-19 in the Super 300 tournament's opening round. He now has a 2-1 head-to-head lead over the world No. 52, having also beaten the Indian at the Swiss Open in March. It was a much-needed confidence booster for Justin, who has struggled for rhythm in recent months with three first-round exits in his last four World Tour starts. The 21-year-old will look to go at least one step better than his last appearance in Macau, where he fell in the round of 16. Standing in his way will be India's seventh seed Ayush Shetty — a familiar rival. The two are tied at 2-2 in their head-to-head, with Justin winning their most recent clash at the Thailand Open in May. In the men's doubles, seasoned campaigners Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong continued to defy the odds, beating Taiwan's Lai Po Yu–Tsai Fu Cheng 21-18, 21-15 to check into the second round. Azriyn, 32, and Wee Kiong, 36, a Rio Olympics silver medallist, have been on a decent run of form lately, having reached the quarter-finals of the Japan Open and the last 16 at the China Open last week. Their recent surge also propelled them two spots up the world rankings to a career-high No. 23, making them the fourth-best ranked Malaysian pair. In mixed doubles, national No. 2 Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin battled hard to overcome Indonesia's Bobby Setiabudi – Melati Daeva Oktavianti 21-14, 16-21, 21-17, while Wong Tien Ci – Lim Chiew Sien bowed out after going down 18-21, 21-11, 21-19 to China's Cheng Xing–Zhang Chi.
