Black Mirror star sues Sports Direct gym after her mother dies from overheating in sauna
Milanka Brooks, who starred in TV sitcoms 'Benidorm', 'The Windsors' and 'My Family,' as well as satire 'Black Mirror', is seeking damages over the death of her 75-year-old mum Mileva Brooks, a former model who died from heatstroke after using the sauna at an Everlast gym in Cheltenham in August 2022.
A coroner's inquest in September 2023 found that the pensioner died three days after being rushed to hospital when other gym users alerted staff that she had collapsed in the sauna and was experiencing breathing difficulties.
Now the actress is suing the owner of the Everlast gym chain, SportsDirect.Com Fitness Ltd, at London's High Court, seeking up to £100,000 in compensation over her mum's death.
Actress Milanka Brooks, 41, found fame starring in a number of TV sitcoms after being cast in multi award-winning BBC1 sitcom My Family in 2000 after graduating from drama school.
She had a regular role in ITV's 'Benidorm', playing Johnny Vegas' fiancée, Ionela, played Princess Svetlana in Channel 4's British Royal family parody 'The Windsors,' and Nigel Planer's wife Elena, in 2014 BBC2 comedy, 'Boomers'.
She then found success in a high-profile role as a blue-faced alien crew member, Elena Tulaska, in the multi-Emmy Award winning Black Mirror episode, USS Callister, in 2017.
But tragedy struck after her mum Mileva, to whom the actress was very close, calling her her "best friend in the world," collapsed and died after using the sauna at the Everlast gym, in Henrietta Street, Cheltenham, on August 26, 2022.
Mileva Brooks, who lived at Lypiatt Terrace, Cheltenham, had joined the gym six months earlier.

Roland Wooderson, assistant coroner for Gloucestershire, recorded a narrative verdict after an inquest in 2023, saying that the former model had "died from the effects of heatstroke' after being "found unresponsive in the sauna of the gym".
He had earlier heard medical evidence that Mileva's body temperature was 39.2 degrees centigrade when it was measured by paramedics who attended the scene.
According to legal documents filed at London's High Court, Ms Brooks is now suing the gym's owners, claiming "damages in excess of £50,000, but limited to £100,000" in her role as administratix of her mum's estate for "personal injury and consequential losses" and under the Fatal Accidents Act 1976.

In online posts, the actress has spoken repeatedly of her and her mum's close relationship calling her "the light and inspiration of my life," her "partner in crime" and "best friend in the world".
In 2020, Frasers Group, the Sports Direct parent company, bought a number of DW Sports Fitness locations out of administration and started the Everlast Gyms chain.
By late 2023, they had nearly 60 branches located across all four countries of the United Kingdom.
The defence of SportsDirect.Com Fitness Ltd was not available from the court at the time of writing.

Alleged 'Hollywood Con Queen' loses fight against extradition from U.K. to U.S.
An Indonesian national dubbed the 'Hollywood Con Queen' by the media for allegedly impersonating top female movie industry executives in a seven-year fraud on Tuesday lost his bid to block his extradition from Britain to stand trial in the U.S. Hargobind Tahilramani is wanted in California on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for allegedly defrauding around 300 people out of a total of approximately $1 million between 2013 and 2020. The 45-year-old is accused of tricking people into travelling to Indonesia and paying exorbitant fees for non-existent film work, before he was arrested in a hotel in Manchester, England, in November 2020. Tahilramani's extradition was approved by a judge and then British ministers in 2023, but he challenged the decision to send him to the U.S. to stand trial, arguing prison conditions would breach his human rights due to his mental health. His lawyer Edward Fitzgerald told London's High Court in April that Tahilramani, who has applied for asylum in Britain, was also at risk of being attacked in prison as a gay man. Fitzgerald said this meant Tahilramani was likely to be held in isolation while in pre-trial detention, which put him at high risk of suicide given his underlying mental health issues. But Tahilramani's appeal was dismissed by Judge Derek Sweeting, who said in a written ruling that the lower court was not wrong when it ordered his extradition to stand trial.

Netflix's push into tie-in games now includes two weird Happy Gilmore titles
Netflix seems to have finally settled on something resembling a strategy for its gaming efforts, and one of the key pillars is games tied to its shows and movies. That's how we got the likes of Squid Game: Unleashed and Black Mirror's Thronglets. Now, as Happy Gilmore 2 hits the streaming service, it's accompanied by a pair of games that show just how promotional Netflix can be. The first game is actually pretty fun, though it's not really a whole game. It's called Happy Gilmore: Golf Mayhem '98 Demo, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a fictional long-lost demo of a golf game starring Happy that exists in the film's universe. It plays and looks like an old-school golf game at first. The twist is that you run over to your ball in between each swing, and there are things to do along the way, like collectibles to pick up or golf kart combat tournaments to partake in. It's all rendered with a very '90s layer of polygonal polish and ends in a fistfight with Bob Barker that plays like a simplified Street Fighter. It's pretty short, with only one available hole to play, but the 'demo' really nails the Happy Gilmore tone. It's available on the web and select TVs as part of a beta at Netflix. (Here are some details on how and where you can play these games.) The other game leans much more toward the advertisement end of the spectrum. It's called The Happy Gilmore 2 Tournament, and it's basically a little Flash-style golf game with three holes that, when you beat it, unlocks… a trailer for Happy Gilmore 2. The most interesting thing about the game is where you play it: it's available through Spotify's mobile app. Netflix's plan for games hasn't always been clear. But earlier this year, Alain Tascan, the streamer's president of games, told me that it was going to focus on a handful specific pillars going forward. The idea was to 'readjust and focus on fewer areas with more intention,' like multiplayer games and kid-friendly experiences, rather than just trying everything to see what works. Another one of those focus areas was games based on Netflix's movie and TV properties, which is where the Happy Gilmore experiences come in. These tie-in games are increasingly becoming straight-up promotional vehicles. When the third and final season of Squid Game hit Netflix, for instance, Squid Game: Unleashed got a big update that included characters and other elements from the new season. It's not unlike Superman appearing in Fortnite just as his movie hits theaters — or Roblox creators making their own Stranger Things games — except, in this case, Netflix manages the whole process and tailors the games and updates to the related property. Instead of making a regular Black Mirror game, for instance, Netflix turned a fictional game from a recent episode into something you could actually play. Often, these experiences are much smaller than what a typical licensed game would be, sort of like a digital version of a McDonald's Happy Meal toy. We're likely to see more of these. Happy Gilmore 2 may not have the same global appeal as Squid Game, but it is a movie that people have been waiting for since 1996, and it's arguably Netflix's biggest film release of the summer, which makes it a good candidate for trying something different. There are plenty of opportunities on the way, from the end of Stranger Things to boxing matches and other live events, so it's unlikely the experimental tie-ins are done — though they might not be as weird as a fist fight with Bob Barker.
