If you'd told me a few years ago that I'd be genuinely excited about a sunscreen, I would probably have snorted. Despite knowing how important daily SPF is – and despite having tested around 100+ products during my decade as a beauty editor, sunscreen, in my mind, always conjured up images of greasy layers, clogged pores and a mirror-like shiny forehead– and I don't mean in a nice 'glass skin' way. I'd try new formulas with hope, only to feel disappointed after a few days of oiliness, irritation or feeling sticky. But then I found Supergoop's Mattescreen Sunscreen SPF30, and I can finally say I'm proudly on board the daily SPF wagon.
I was sent a tube of this a few months ago, but being blissfully unaware of just how good it is, I put it to the side in a 'test later' pile. After all, I didn't have high expectations for it, given my track record with most other facial SPF products. Fast forward to today, and it's the only sunscreen I wear now. It's earned permanent status in my make-up bag, and I'll rave about it to anyone who stays standing still near me for long enough (I'm not joking, I even told a girl on the tube about it).

What makes this SPF special, for me, is the finish. The name Mattescreen isn't a joke, it truly does what it says. It leaves my skin with a soft, satin-matte texture that looks and feels like a silicone-based primer. If you've ever liked the feel of a product like Smashbox Photo Finish or Benefit's POREfessional, imagine that kind of smooth grip, but with sun protection built in. It creates an even, slightly blurring base that makes applying foundation or tinted moisturiser easy. No sliding, no separating, no weird patches around the nose or chin.
As someone with combination skin that leans oily in the T-zone, this mattifying effect is what I didn't know was missing from the SPFs I was choosing. I don't need to layer on powder or blot every couple of hours anymore. On good days, I even skip foundation altogether and just wear Mattescreen over moisturiser with a bit of concealer. It gives a soft-focus finish that's flattering on its own.
Another big plus is that it doesn't irritate my very fussy skin. That's often been my issue with traditional chemical sunscreens, which tend to cause redness or little breakouts around the jawline. Sensitive skins and eyes generally fare best with mineral sunscreens, and Merit Beauty has them covered. The Uniform SPF50 (pictured, £33) comes in a generous 50ml helping and although coverage is still very sheer, it does blend beautifully and realistically. Again, shades are thoughtfully chosen (I'm 26) and all leave a very pretty eggshell sheen that sits at the halfway point between matte and glowy. If your skin is relatively clear and even, it's ideal. But if you'd like a mineral sunscreen with more redness coverage, try Ilia's terrific Super Serum Skin Tint SPF30 (£42), which behaves more like a foundation and has a huge shade lineup for all. Beauty of Joseon's Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen SPF30 (£17) went viral upon launch and if you're balanced to combination in type and would like a well-priced sunscreen that imparts a sheer, slightly shiny glow, then it's well worth a go. But dry skins shouldn't attempt this without plenty of moisturising skincare beneath, which brings me to the rub of the matter. While tinted sunscreens are of the same standard as regular SPF products, their effectiveness is identically dependent on applying enough: two longest finger lengths of sunscreen is adequate for face and neck. And so in order to be properly protected, one would have to apply so much tinted sunscreen as to appear caked in makeup (imagine applying that much foundation and you'll get the idea – you'd look like a TikTok influencer). It's for this reason that I would always suggest applying a tinted product over a regular untinted sunscreen, in a belt and braces approach.

Primer that 'fills' fine lines shoppers are buying 'on repeat'
One shopper has purchased the £29 makeup bag hero over and over for nine years, others have said it's 'better' than brands like Benefit, with our beauty experts claiming it shares similar ingredients to Lancome and YSL Mature shoppers have praised a 'game changer' makeup product that helps 'fill open pores and fine lines' for flawless foundation application. The Smooth Like Silk Face Prime from brand Look Fabulous Forever has been hailed as 'better' than popular brands, with some claiming to have been 'buying it on repeat' for almost a decade. As skin ages, foundation, eye makeup and lipstick no longer last all day as they once did. This is because the skin often isn't as smooth as it once was, and the reduction in oestrogen production also leaves it a lot drier, so makeup tends to get absorbed into the skin, settling into fine lines and disappearing as the day goes on. As such, a good primer is a must to keep makeup looking great all day, which is exactly what the Smooth Like Silk Face Prime promises. Priced at £29, the complexion product can be used before makeup to prep the skin, or for those in a rush, users can even mix it into foundation before applying to save time, while achieving just as effective results. Designed specifically for older skin, the primer is formulated with aloe vera and silica, which reportedly 'fills open pores and fine lines' and provides the perfect base for long-lasting makeup. 'However, have rated 4 stars instead of 5 because I find the square shape of the container takes up too much room in a make-up bag.' "I launched Look Fabulous Forever at the age of 65 because I felt largely invisible to the traditional beauty industry,' the founder said. 'I was also finding it increasingly difficult to find makeup that really worked on my older skin and have come to this business as a consumer - all our products are formulated so they perform brilliantly on older skin. At Look Fabulous Forever we want you to look fabulous whatever age you are without worrying too much about the odd wrinkle or grey hair.' For those curious about the brand's other products, the retailer is currently offering a trio of primers at a discounted rate. Worth £83, the set is priced at £59 and contains the Never Feather Lip Prime and Smooth Out Eye Prime, as well as the Smooth Like Silk Face Prime. The eye primer creates a perfectly smooth, neutral base to prevent your eyeshadow from migrating into fine lines and keep colours fresh all day, while the lip primer is designed to seal the edges of your lips, keeping your lipstick from bleeding into the fine lines around the mouth. Saving £24 overall, and coming with a free makeup bag, each of the primers work out at less than £20 each as part of the set, which could be worth considering for those looking to overhaul their makeup bag with products better suited to ageing skin.
