Malaysia on track to hit 2025 trade target, says Tengku Zafrul
Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the latest trade figures for June will be released this Friday. KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia remains on course to meet its 2025 trade growth target of 4%-5%, despite signs of moderating global trade, says investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz. 'We're still on track to reach our growth target. If you look at our growth target, around 4% to 5%, that will still be achievable,' he told a press conference at Menara Miti here today. While acknowledging that some trade might have been front-loaded over the past five months, Tengku Zafrul said he expected the momentum to continue. 'We'll be releasing the latest trade figures for June this Friday, so you'll be able to see the numbers then.' On the ongoing tariff negotiations with the US, Tengku Zafrul said both sides were making progress. 'We had a productive discussion, our team and I, together with the office of the US trade representative. We're now exploring various tariff and non-tariff items where we can reach an agreement.' He said one of the key issues raised by the US was the liberalisation of foreign equity restrictions in certain strategic sectors. 'As you know, Malaysia has equity restrictions for foreign shareholders in certain sectors. There's a request for us to relook or liberalise those sectors. 'We need to consult those industries, whether we are ready to relax those equity shareholding restrictions,' he said. Tengku Zafrul however stressed that not all US requests would be accepted. 'We are working to meet this new deadline (Aug 1), but not at the expense of agreeing to every request. Some of the requests we feel may not be fair to Malaysia.' Room for flexibility On the tariff structure under discussion, Tengku Zafrul said there might be room for flexibility on a sector-by-sector basis. 'There will be opportunities for us to negotiate tariffs below 10% for certain sectors. But at the same time, we cannot depend solely on this trade negotiation.' He pointed to the current status of key sectors such as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. 'For example, pharmaceuticals are in a better position. Right now, tariffs for both the semiconductor and pharmaceutical sectors are at zero. Naturally, we want to maintain that 0% tariff, but whether we can secure that is another matter.' On the potential impact of tariff changes on the Johor-Singapore special economic zone, Tengku Zafrul said investors were holding off until there was greater clarity. 'There seems to be a wait-and-see attitude. Investors are watching how the tariff scenario plays out before recalculating their positions. That calculation can only happen once there's certainty.' On July 8, US president Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Malaysia, effective Aug 1.

Citing Petronas and Yinson success in Brazil, Anwar urges Malaysian firms to go beyond China, US
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6 — Malaysian companies must be willing to explore new markets and trading opportunities overseas. In making the call, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said they must not solely rely on traditional markets, but instead venture into new ones. Anwar said platforms like the BRICS offer enormous opportunities, and praised Malaysian companies Petronas and Yinson Production for their successful ventures in Brazil. Anwar, who is here at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, said Lula was surprised to see Malaysian companies doing business in the country. 'I mentioned Yinson and Petronas to him, and their role in Brazil. He was surprised and asked for more details,' he said at a dinner hosted by Yinson Production here. Also present were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Yinson Holdings Bhd executive chairman Lim Han Weng. Yinson, an independent owner and operator of floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, has three projects in Brazil since 2023, namely FPSO Anna Nery, FPSO Maria Quiteria and FPSO Atlanta. Petronas has ventured into oil production in Brazil and last year opened its petrol station as well. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that although Malaysia's biggest market and source of investment is the United States and China, there are opportunities beyond them. Anwar said he has asked Zafrul to facilitate and offer assistance to Malaysian companies doing business in Brazil. Brazil has not only shown its strength as a voice of the third world, but has also become an important economic power, he said. In his meeting with Lula da Silva this morning, Anwar said they discussed various issues of importance between the two countries. Anwar said Lula has accepted his invitation to visit Malaysia during the ASEAN Summit in October. 'He wants to bring key ministers and business groups to Malaysia. There will be a special conference with both of us jointly addressing the event,' he said. Malaysia participated in the BRICS Leaders' Summit as a partner country and as ASEAN chair 2025. It officially became a BRICS partner country on Jan 1, 2025. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil increased by 14.6 per cent to RM20.35 billion (US$4.38 billion) in 2024, rising from RM17.43 billion recorded in 2023. Brazil is one of Malaysia's main trading partners in Latin America. — Bernama

Strengthening Sarawak's export ecosystem
Key dignitaries were among the nearly 300 entrepreneurs and industry players who gathered for Sarawak Export Day 2025 in Kuching. KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak Export Day 2025, held at the Imperial Hotel Kuching, concluded with the participation of nearly 300 entrepreneurs and industry players from across the state, reflecting the government's strong commitment to advancing the state's export agenda. This programme was jointly organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) and the Sarawak state government through its International Trade, Industry and Investment Ministry (Mintred). The event also received support from strategic partners such as Invest Sarawak Sdn Bhd, Exim Bank and Capital Markets Malaysia. Sarawak Export Day is part of Matrade's ongoing initiative to raise awareness and build the export capabilities of local companies, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the state, to penetrate international markets. The official launch was officiated by the Sarawak Deputy Premier and Mintred Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. Also in attendance were Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Matrade board member Datuk Mohammad Medan Abdullah. In conjunction with the programme, two local companies were recognised under Matrade's programme with the Sarawak Best Exporter Award. Iana Corporation Sdn Bhd, a producer of Sarawak layer cakes and biscuits, was awarded Best Exporter in the MSME Category, while Tuong Aik Shipyard Sdn Bhd, a shipbuilding and repair engineering company, received the award in the Mid-Tier Company (MTC) Category. 'Sarawak has high export potential. We are seeing increased participation by companies in Matrade's export development programmes and this must continue to ensure more entrepreneurs in the state can compete globally,' said Reezal Merican. According to Reezal Merican, the organisation of such programmes reflects the Federal Government's strong commitment to building a more inclusive and resilient export ecosystem. He noted that Sarawak is now on a solid path toward export development, with growing participation of companies in Matrade's programmes. 'Sarawak has high export potential. We are seeing increased participation by companies in Matrade's export development programmes and this must continue to ensure more entrepreneurs in the state can compete globally,' he added. Reezal Merican also emphasised that Matrade will continue to serve as a facilitator for exporters through business matching initiatives, export promotion and capacity building. 'From 2024 to May 2025, a total of 382 companies from Sarawak were supported under Matrade's export development and promotion programmes, generating nearly RM1bil in export value,' he added. The state-level Export Day serves as an important platform to strengthen public-private collaboration in driving export growth. Key activities over the two days included engagement sessions, business matching, export clinics and technical briefings involving government agencies and financial institutions. Following Sarawak, Matrade will continue its Export Day series in other states, including Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, scheduled for August 2025. This effort is part of a national initiative to broaden local companies' participation in global markets while supporting the country's export growth in an inclusive and sustainable manner.
