Crackdown on illegal power connections uncovers 3557 cases in Oman

Nama Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC), the country's national distribution utility with coverage of all governorates with the exception of Dhofar, has announced that it has busted a total of 3,557 illegal electricity connections during 2024, helping contribute to the reduction of system losses.
The crackdown encompassed, among other measures, the intensive inspection of connections and meters aimed at identifying and rectifying instances of tampering, unauthorized connections, and defective meters, the state-owned utility said.
'These efforts led to the detection of over 3557 cases of illegal connections and the recovery of more than 228 GWh and over RO 2 million of revenue,' the company stated in its newly published 2024 Annual Report.
Additionally, meter reading operations were intensified during the year, according to NEDC. 'The company implemented enhanced oversight measures for manual meter reading, including the establishment of a dedicated validation team to verify reading and ensure data accuracy.'
Furthermore, the transition to Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology helped enhance the accuracy of meter readings and enable real-time monitoring of meter performance, thereby reducing errors and inefficiencies, it noted.
'These initiatives reflect the company's commitment to operational excellence, improved revenue assurance, and enhanced distribution efficiency. Moving forward, the company remains focused on further optimizing its loss-reduction strategies through continued technological advancements and process improvements.'
As a result of these and other measures, system losses dipped 0.27 per cent to 7.95 per cent in 2024, down from 8.23 per cent a year earlier. 'This improvement is the result of strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing distribution efficiency and minimizing losses,' the company added.
NEDC, part of Nama Group, is licensed to carry out electricity distribution management and related activities across all governments excluding Dhofar, has a portfolio of 1.35 million customers. Overseeing Dhofar is Nama Dhofar Services, an integrated provider of electricity, water and wastewater services in the southern governorate of Oman.

OETC completes fault current limiter project
MUSCAT: Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) announced the successful completion of all construction and commissioning works for the Fault Current Limiter (FCLR) project on the 132kV transmission network in Muscat. The project has a total investment value exceeding RO 4 million. The Fault Current Limiters (FCLs) are installed to limit fault current to a safe level without interrupting the circuit, thereby protecting transformers, circuit breakers, cables, and other infrastructure from excessive thermal and mechanical stress. They also help avoid costly equipment upgrades when fault levels exceed design ratings due to system growth or new network interconnections, and ensure the overall stability, safety, and reliability of the electricity network while maintaining uninterrupted power supply to other parts of the grid. This project is part of OETC's ongoing efforts to enhance the sustainability and resilience of the national transmission network, in line with the company's strategic objectives to improve efficiency, reduce system failures, and ensure swift emergency response using modern smart technologies and global best practices. Commenting on the achievement, Eng Masoud bin Salam al Riyami, Chief Operations Officer at OETC, stated: "This project marks a significant milestone in improving operational efficiency and the quality of power supply. It reflects our commitment to investing in smart infrastructure that ensures optimal grid performance and meets national energy development goals." He further highlighted the company's strategic five-year plans to assess network conditions and implement both current and future projects aimed at building a world-class smart grid capable of adapting to growing demand and sectoral transformation. "OETC is fully committed to continuous development, cost-effective investments, and adopting high-standard systems to maintain a reliable and sustainable power transmission network. The FCLR system is a key step in that journey," Al Riyami added. OETC, a member of Nama Group, is the only company responsible for the transmission and control of electricity across the Sultanate of Oman's network. The electricity is transmitted from production stations to distributed load centers in the governorates. The transmission network operates at a voltage of 132kV and above to cover All of the governorates in the Sultanate of Oman. Furthermore, OETC manages the interconnections between Oman and the GCC interconnection network, which operates at a voltage of 220kV.

Oman's first renewable energy storage project imminent
MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman is making significant efforts to implement green energy projects, as "Oman Vision 2040" aims for these projects to contribute nearly 30 per cent of the country's total electricity generation by 2030. Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, revealed that five to six new renewable energy projects — focused on wind and solar power — will commence this year, with particular emphasis on wind energy due to Oman's strong potential in this sector. He also confirmed that an announcement regarding Oman's first renewable energy storage project will be made soon. The minister added that these projects will strengthen Oman's transition to renewable energy while creating vast opportunities for industries reliant on clean and sustainable power. He highlighted that Oman has already launched the "Manah 1" and "Manah 2" renewable energy plants, with a combined capacity of around 1,000 megawatts. Initial results indicate that each plant is producing over 500 megawatts, exceeding expectations. Furthermore, he explained that the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology; and Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) are working to establish a hydrogen pathway by setting up production and supply stations within concession areas. Nama subsidiaries unveil major initiatives for enhanced utility services
MUSCAT: Two key subsidiaries of the Nama Group — Nama Electricity Supply Company (NESC) and Nama Dhofar Services — in a media briefing held on Tuesday, May 27, unveiled their latest initiatives and strategic projects aimed at enhancing customer experience, promoting sustainability, and supporting Oman Vision 2040. The CEO of Nama Electricity Supply Company, Salim Said al Kamyani, outlined several major projects planned for 2025. Among them is the rollout of an advanced digital system allowing customers to track transactions in real time, view daily consumption through the mobile app, and automatically recharge their prepaid accounts. New features such as load management and real-time consumption tracking under the 'Sabiq' service will empower users to better control electricity usage. As part of its corporate social responsibility, NESC also launched the first phase of its Air Conditioner Maintenance Initiative to improve AC efficiency and reduce electricity bills. Complementing these efforts is the 'Sahalat' campaign, offering flexible payment options including: Thabit: A fixed monthly bill payment plan. Yusr: Monthly installment plans for customers with outstanding dues. Sabiq: A prepaid option with real-time monitoring for smarter energy use. Meanwhile, Nama Dhofar Services presented its 2024 achievements and future plans during the same media event. CEO Ali Issa Shamas announced large-scale infrastructure projects, including the RO 27 million Ashour desalination plant and a RO 35 million expansion of the wastewater treatment plant. The company also reported strong operational results: 99.7% water network reliability, over 22 million cubic meters of high-quality recycled water produced, and more than 56% of treated water reused. In electricity services, 84% of meters have been upgraded to AMR systems, supported by the launch of 33 e-services and electronic billing for customer convenience. Tenders worth RO 137 million were awarded for various service and grid expansion projects, including rural electrification aimed at replacing diesel generators and enhancing carbon neutrality. Human resource development was also highlighted, with 40,000 training hours recorded and a zero lost-time injury rate maintained since 2018. Customer satisfaction reached 75%, with 98% of complaints resolved. The company also launched innovative community programs such as the Nama Dhofar Services Hackathon and 'Nama Dhofar Memory' to strengthen documentation and knowledge management. These announcements underscore Nama Group's collective commitment to sustainable growth, enhanced utility services, and alignment with national development goals.
