PM: Najib's DNAA is a judicial matter, I didn't interfere
'That is the judge's decision and the Attorney General's. I do not interfere,' the Prime Minister said briefly when approached by reporters after performing Friday prayers at the Kampung Sri Aman Mosque here yesterday.
Anwar was commenting on High Court judge Justice K. Muniandy granting a discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) to Najib yesterday following a request from the latter's defence team, Bernama reported.
The grounds given by the judge was that the prosecution lacked the preparedness to proceed with trial and that the case had been postponed too many times since 2019.
The court was informed that the prosecution had yet to obtain the necessary documentary evidence.
The delay, the judge noted, had denied the accused the right to a fair and timely resolution of the case.
A DNAA means the accused is temporarily discharged from the charges, but may still be prosecuted for the same offences in the future if the prosecution decides to reinstate them.
The current case, which was discharged yesterday, involves three charges of money laundering involving RM27mil, allegedly received through Najib's three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Bhd, AmBank Group Building, Jalan Raja Chulan, on July 8, 2014.
Najib had on Feb 3, 2019, claimed trial to the charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM5mil, up to five years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.
The former Umno president is currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for another case of misappropriating RM42mil in SRC International funds.
On Sept 2, 2022, he filed a petition for a royal pardon. On Jan 29, 2024, the Pardons Board halved his jail sentence from 12 to six years and reduced his fine from RM210mil to RM50mil.

Man Charged With 52 Sexual Offences Against Daughter In Melaka
MELAKA, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- An electrical goods technician was charged in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court here today with 52 counts of committing incest, physical sexual assault and recording pornographic videos of his biological daughter since May. According to the charges, the 41-year-old man is accused of committing the offences at a house in Taman Tambak Paya Harmoni, Melaka Tengah, against his 18-year-old daughter between May 12 and Aug 6. When the charges were read before Judge Haderiah Siri, the accused pleaded not guilty to all counts. Of the total charges, 17 were framed under Section 376B of the Penal Code for committing incest, which carries imprisonment of not less than 10 years and up to 30 years, and whipping, if convicted. For the other 34 charges, the accused was charged under Sections 14(b) and 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act (SOACA) 2017, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act. The offences under those sections carry a penalty of imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping, while Section 16(1) of SOACA 2017 provides for imprisonment not exceeding five years and a minimum of two strokes of the cane. One charge was also brought under Section 7 of SOACA 2017 for producing child pornography by recording two images of his daughter naked in a bathroom at the same location on July 9. If convicted, the accused faces imprisonment of up to 20 years and not less than five strokes of the cane. The prosecution, led by Muhamad Ehsan Nasarudin, proposed bail of RM20,000 for each charge with additional conditions including prohibition on contacting the victim and witnesses, reporting to the nearest police station every two weeks and surrendering his passport to the court.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has urged Southeast Asian countries to make inclusivity a standard in urban governance through the newly-launched ASEAN Urban Women for Resilience and Transformative Sustainable Actions (AURORA) initiative. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said even though women make up half of the 680 million people living in ASEAN's urban areas, yet their representation in decision-making bodies remains disproportionately low. "In some ASEAN local councils, women hold fewer than 20 per cent of seats. This imbalance affects the way cities prioritise issues such as safety in public spaces, access to childcare and the design of transport systems that meet the needs of families and the elderly. "AURORA addresses this by fostering a culture of leadership that is more inclusive and responsive. It brings together cities across ASEAN to strengthen women's participation in governance while improving the quality of urban policies and services for all residents," she said during her speech at the 'A Women-Led City Initiative In ASEAN AURORA: ASEAN Urban Women For Resilence And Transformative Sustainable Actions' forum held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here. The forum was attended by representatives from ASEAN member states, city leaders, civil society groups and regional partners. Zaliha also stressed that cities led with active female participation tend to adopt policies that are more responsive to residents' needs such as integrating community safety, social wellbeing and economic development. She added that Malaysia's own experience with gender-responsive planning across more than 83 local authorities had improved safety in public spaces, enhanced transport accessibility and ensured infrastructure meets the needs of all citizens, guided by feedback from women, seniors, persons with disabilities and caregivers. Under the AURORA initiative, ASEAN member cities are encouraged to adopt a voluntary framework that includes setting targets for women's representation in leadership roles, conducting regular safety assessments of public spaces, and improving public transport accessibility. Zaliha said such measures would help cities monitor progress, learn from one another and raise governance standards across the region.
