Esports and sports are moving closer together as NFL, NBA and other leagues chase fans
Esports and sports are moving closer together as NFL, NBA and other leagues chase fans originally appeared on The Sporting News Professional sports face a growing challenge. Fans still tune in for the biggest games, but it can be hard to get them to stay for anything beyond that. With so many forms of digital entertainment competing for screen time, leagues are under pressure to find new ways to hold interest. Esports has filled the gap for millions of viewers. Competitive gaming now draws global audiences for everything from football simulations like Madden and EA FC to fantasy titles unrelated to sports like League of Legends and Counter-Strike. These broadcasts bring the action and commentary around the clock, giving fans steady engagement rather than just having to show up Sunday, no matter how fun that may be. Esports World Cup Traditional leagues recognize the inherent potential with this and they're rolling out their own esports competitions. The NBA2K League and the ePremier League are examples of sports organizations creating digital extensions of their brands. The production quality is similar to any televised game, with commentators, analysts, and live reactions helping fans stay involved and interested. The strategy is reportedly working, with viewers tuning in to watch elite players compete in digital arenas. Interest is said to be growing as well. What started as small experiments has developed into a major industry where action on the field is now complemented by a virtual counterpart. The future of that relationship will be discussed at the upcoming New Global Sport Conference coming up this weekend on August 23-25 in Saudi Arabia, where leaders from sports, gaming, and esports will meet. Casey Wasserman, who is the head of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Olympic legend Michael Johnson will be among the attendees, along with Andrew Wilson of Electronic Arts and Ralf Reichert of the Esports World Cup Foun. Their focus will be on how both the real-life and on-line sides of this industry can grow together over the next three decades. Previous conferences have already led to collaborations, such as chess joining the Esports World Cup lineup. Momentum appears to be growing, so the possibility of more crossover deals is strong. Whether it is leagues continuing to back esports or broadcasts that blend both formats, digital competition is positioning itself as a greater part of the overall sports landscape. Read More!

Jake Paul to face lightweight boxing champion Gervonta Davis on Nov. 14
Jake Paul will face Gervonta "Tank" Davis in a boxing match on Nov. 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Netflix announced Wednesday. The bout is expected to be the biggest test to date for Paul, a social media star with 28 million followers on Instagram and 21 million followers on YouTube. Paul (12-1) became a professional boxer in January 2020 and has impressed despite limited experience in the ring. He has faced criticism for his competition, however. Most of his opponents have been nonboxers — a former NBA Slam Dunk champion in Nate Robinson, and MMA fighters like Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren and Mike Perry. He beat a 59-year-old Mike Tyson, and his lone loss came to boxer Tommy Fury, the half-brother of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Paul, 28, is coming off a unanimous decision against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June. Davis is without question Paul's most heralded opponent. The 30-year-old WBA lightweight champion is one of the sport's top talents, amassing a 30-0-1 record. Though he stands just 5-foot-5, Davis is known for his vicious punching power and has 28 knockouts in his career. He most recently retained his belt with a majority decision draw against Lamond Roach Jr. in March. Davis' boxing career was in jeopardy after he was arrested on July 11 in an alleged domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend. According to the Miami-Dade County Clerk's Office, a misdemeanor battery charge against Davis was dropped. Paul vs. Davis is the latest boxing match promoted by Netflix as it gets more involved in live sports. Paul's bout with Tyson last November, for example, peaked at 65 million streams, according to the streaming service. Netflix is also promoting Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 13, and has WWE Raw and multiple NFL games on Christmas Day. Not everyone in the boxing world is happy Paul vs. Davis is happening. Ryan Garcia, a former WBC interim lightweight champion who lost to Davis in 2023, wrote on social media that "boxing is officially the WWE … integrity of the sport is getting ruined every day."

Google isn't just paying big for AI talent — it's splurging on celeb talent too
Google's Pixel event featured a parade of celebrities, including Jimmy Fallon as host. The event showcased Google's investment in celebrity appearances to boost product launches. The tech giant also announced the hiring of NBA star Stephen Curry as its new performance advisor. Jimmy Fallon. Alexandra Cooper. Steph Curry. The Jonas Brothers. Google isn't just paying big to score major AI talent — it's also ponying up for celeb talent. If you tuned into Google's Pixel event on Wednesday, you might have lost track of the number of celebrities flashing across your screen in the first five minutes. The annual "Made by Google" keynote opened with a star-studded video montage, with celebrities "passing the phone" to each other. It kicked off with "Call Her Daddy" podcaster Alex Cooper and then cut to a number of household names and notable figures, including NBA star Steph Curry, golf pro Bryson DeChambeau, and F1 driver Lando Norris. Jimmy Fallon also made an appearance in the intro before taking the stage to host the event. The celebrity cameos didn't end in the intro — they were name-dropped throughout the event. For example, while joining in on a demo showcasing Pixel's texting platform, Fallon's screen showed recent texts with Curry, Cooper, Joe Jonas, and other celebrities. Some of the celebrities also made it onstage in Brooklyn for live demos, like Cooper, who did a segment showing off Pixel's new photo framing and editing capabilities. Other buzzy names, like Peloton fitness instructor Cody Rigsby, broke a sweat testing the Pixel Watch 4. SubwayTakes' Kareem Rahma appeared as well to introduce a pre-recorded video decrying the return of wired earbuds as a fashion statement. It was a star-studded roster that couldn't have been cheap — and a notable flex by Google, whose search and advertising business continues to boom, helping celebrity partnerships and hiring efforts in the AI talent wars. Ahead of the showcase, Google announced a new partnership with Curry, who will serve as its "Performance Advisor" across Google Health, Pixel, and Google Cloud to help fine-tune its products. At the event, Google celebrated the collaboration with a skit showing Curry in a mock interview at the tech giant. The event then closed with Nick Jonas greeting Jimmy Fallon on the stage, and showing a music video that the Jonas Brothers filmed on the Pixel 10 Pro. Google's events have often included celebrity appearances, but this year appeared to be a notable uptick. Senior vice president of platforms and devices, Rick Osterloh, hinted at a reason why during an early conversation with Fallon at the start of the 10th Google Pixel event, which he said would be "pretty different." "There's a lot of reasons to do it like this, but we think this year, we've got a game-changing phone with game-changing technology," Osterloh said. "Why not have a game-changing launch event," he added.
