Municipalities intensify efforts for Eid Al Adha festivities
QNA
Doha
In preparation for the upcoming Eid Al Adha holiday, several municipalities across Qatar announced intensified efforts to ensure public safety, hygiene, and food security.
These efforts include comprehensive inspection and monitoring campaigns targeting food establishments, enhanced sanitation and public health services, and the provision of safe and welcoming public spaces and recreational areas expected to attract significant crowds during the holiday.
In Doha, the Health Control Section of the Municipal Control Department at the Ministry of Municipality launched daily morning and evening inspection campaigns that will continue throughout the Eid holiday. The campaigns are designed to strengthen oversight of food safety standards and validity.
The initiative includes 14 field campaigns and approximately 10,000 inspection visits covering a wide range of food establishments. It also involves the collection of 250 food samples for laboratory analysis.
Key inspection targets include traditional food restaurants, butcher shops, live poultry suppliers, food production and distribution companies, restaurants, hotels, and shops selling fruits, vegetables, sweets, and nuts.
The campaign also extends to food outlets in public areas such as parks, beaches, and popular tourist destinations, including Souq Waqif, Msheireb, Katara, and The Pearl.
The campaign also includes inspections of women's salons, barbershops, and laundries, with instructions given to workers and consumers to raise awareness of proper hygiene practices.
Additional efforts will be made to provide guidance on safe food storage and transportation, as well as on the proper selection and slaughter of animals in accordance with public health regulations.
Al Wakrah also initiated an inspection and awareness campaign focused on traditional food restaurants to ensure compliance with health standards and to educate workers on proper food handling procedures as part of its Eid preparations.
Municipalities such as Umm Salal, Al Khor, Al Thakhira, and Al Daayen organized comprehensive operational plans for Eid Al Adha. These include enhancing the readiness of sanitation teams to operate around the clock, intensifying cleaning efforts in residential neighborhoods, markets, and high-traffic areas, and organizing traditional markets and livestock markets to ensure smooth operations in coordination with security authorities.
Supervision of abattoirs has been enhanced through increased operational capacity, additional work shifts, and the inclusion of veterinary inspectors to examine animals and ensure their wellbeing.
To maintain cleanliness during and after the slaughter process, the number of waste collection personnel and equipment has been doubled. Field patrols in neighborhoods and markets have been intensified and additional waste bins have been distributed at key locations.
A rapid response system for reports and complaints will be available through the unified call center.
The Ministry of Municipality asked the public to adhere to the use of licensed abattoirs for animal slaughter, avoid random and unsupervised practices, and cooperate with sanitation teams to maintain a clean and safe environment.
The Ministry emphasized that the success of these efforts relies on the awareness and cooperation of the entire community.

MoPH hosts a slew of events to mark World Food Safety Day
QNA Doha Held under the theme 'Food Safety — Science in Action', the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has organized a range of important activities and events to mark the World Food Safety Day, observed annually on June 7, and marked globally under the slogan 'Food Safety is Everyone's Business'. This year's event highlights the vital role that science plays in supporting policies and procedures designed to ensure food safety and protect consumer health. The occasion aims to reinforce global efforts to reduce the burden of foodborne illnesses and to emphasise that the responsibility for food safety lies with everyone, from farm to fork. To mark the occasion, MoPH launched an extensive awareness campaign across social media platforms, with the aim of raising public awareness about the importance of food safety and promoting correct practices that help prevent exposure to food-related risks. Commenting on this, Director of the Food Safety Department at MoPH, Wasan Abdulla Al Baker, stated: 'The State of Qatar continues its efforts to strengthen food safety, recognising its importance as a fundamental requirement of food security, as food is not considered food unless it is safe.' She added that food safety plays a key role in limiting the spread of foodborne diseases. She emphasised that World Food Safety Day plays an active role in raising awareness among individuals and educating them on how to prevent these diseases. It also sheds light on the solutions and measures that can be adopted to ensure food safety from source to consumer. Al Baker said that the Food Safety Department at the MoPH has made significant progress in adopting a science-based approach as a cornerstone for strengthening the national food safety system. Among these achievements are capacity building in risk assessment and the implementation of related activities, which have enabled the department to respond effectively to food incidents and take the necessary actions based on accurate data and reliable scientific evidence. The department has also established an internal scientific research team responsible for setting priorities for food safety research, directly supervising the completion of related studies in line with the Ministry's vision and objectives. In addition, the department has consistently supported and developed its laboratory services by continuously expanding the scope of accredited analytical methods at the Ministry's Food Safety Laboratories. As part of the World Food Safety Day activities, the Ministry organized a workshop entitled 'The Role of Science in Supporting Food Safety Regulatory Decisions', held at the Itqan Clinical Simulation and Innovation at Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City (HBKMC). The workshop covered several key topics, including the importance of relying on scientific data and credible evidence when formulating policies and making decisions related to food safety and consumer protection, as well as the exchange of experiences and expertise among the relevant parties. Key topics included Qatar's scientific framework for ensuring the accuracy and consistency of food analyses to support evidence-based decision making, global research trends in food safety, and science-based decision making for safer food. The workshop also included a presentation on the role of science as a driver for transforming the food system, the development of technical regulations and food standards, and the assessment of risks that threaten plant health. The workshop further addressed the importance of surveillance systems in the early detection of foodborne disease outbreaks and reviewed MoPH's experience in managing food incidents and emergencies. In addition, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Shafallah Centre for Persons with Disabilities, organised a children's drawing competition for Shafallah students on the theme of food safety. The children's artwork was displayed at the World Food Safety Day exhibition. Representatives from the Ministry also delivered a bilingual lecture in Arabic and English for Shafallah Centre staff, covering the principles of food safety and ways to prevent foodborne diseases. Furthermore, the World Food Safety Day celebrations included an educational event for children aged 3 to 12 years at Qatar Mall, organised by MoPH with the aim of building a culture of food safety in the community. This was achieved by instilling healthy principles and practices in children through learning, play and practical experience. The event featured educational games, drawing and colouring activities, interactive microscope demonstrations and the distribution of symbolic gifts to children to emphasize the importance of food safety.

US-backed GHF says Gaza aid sites remain shut as Israeli attacks kill 42
At least 42 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza on Eid-al-Adha, medical sources told Al Jazeera, as the US-backed group distributing aid in the Palestinian territory said all its centres were closed until further notice. The dead bodies of 16 people arrived at Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis on Friday, local health authorities said, while another 16 were brought to Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza, five to Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, and five more to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah. 'This is how Eid looks here in Gaza,' said Al Jazeera's Tareq Abu-Azoum, reporting from Deir el-Balah on the first day of the Muslim holy festival usually marked by joy. This year the day 'is a very grim reminder of what they have lost and how they are forced to cope with unimaginable circumstances' amid bombardment, displacement and loss, he added. Meanwhile, a journalist who was wounded in an Israeli strike on Ahli Hospital on Thursday succumbed to their injures, raising the number of journalists killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war to 226, Gaza's Government Media Office said on Friday. The office called on 'all journalistic bodies in all countries of the world to condemn these systematic crimes against Palestinian journalists and media professionals in the Gaza Strip'. 'We also call on them to exert serious and effective pressure to stop the crime of genocide, protect journalists and media professionals in the Gaza Strip, and halt their killing,' it added. Separately in Gaza on Friday, four Israeli soldiers were killed in combat in Khan Younis when a booby-trapped building they were in exploded, according to a preliminary Israeli army probe cited by local media. This brings the total number of Israeli soldiers killed since the beginning of the week in Gaza to eight, reported Al Jazeera's Hamdah Salhut from Amman. Friday's deaths come as the US-backed group tasked with distributing aid in Gaza said its hubs would remain closed until further notice, despite a growing hunger crisis in the territory. Aid agencies have warned that all residents in Gaza face the threat of famine after Israel imposed a severe blockade on the territory in March, blocking the entry of food, medicine and fuel. Amid international pressure, Israel allowed some aid to enter Gaza last month, but aid groups have warned the amounts are inadequate. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a previously unknown group that is overseeing the aid distribution effort, advised people to stay away from the aid distribution hubs 'for their safety'. GHF, which began distributing aid last week, said in a Facebook post on Friday that details about reopening would be announced later. Operations at the group's aid distribution hubs were halted earlier this week following several incidents of deadly violence near the sites, in which Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian aid seekers. Only two sites distributed aid on Thursday. On Sunday, thousands of people headed towards the distribution site hours before dawn. As they approached, Israeli forces ordered them to disperse and come back later. When the crowds reached the Flag Roundabout, 1km (0.6 mile) away, at about 3am, Israeli forces opened fire, witnesses said. 'There was fire from all directions, from naval warships, from tanks and drones,' said Amr Abu Teiba, who was in the crowd. Goher Rahbour, a surgeon working in Gaza's Khan Younis, told Al Jazeera that the bullets extracted from victims of the shooting near the aid distribution centre on Sunday were from M16 assault guns, consistent with those used by the Israeli military. 'I operated on two patients and we removed M16 bullets from abdominal injuries,' Rahbour told Al Jazeera. 'When I spoke to these patients, they were very clear to say they came from Israeli forces.' The surgeon also said hospitals were operating with little or no resources. 'There is a lack of everything – antibiotics, swabs, surgical instruments,' he said. The GHF's approach has been fiercely criticised by humanitarian organisations, including the United Nations. The GHF says private security contractors guarding its sites have not fired on crowds. Israel's military has acknowledged firing warning shots on previous occasions. Israel's war on Gaza has killed at least 54,677 Palestinians and wounded 125,530, Gaza's Health Ministry said on Thursday. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, and more than 200 were taken captive. On Thursday, mediators Qatar and Egypt announced renewed efforts to secure a ceasefire deal based on a US-backed proposal for a 60-day truce and the entry of humanitarian aid. Previous ceasefire efforts have, however, repeatedly broken down over Israel's rejection of key terms. In past rounds of negotiations, Israel has walked back commitments related to a permanent halt to the war and a full withdrawal of its troops from Gaza.
