IIT Madras opens admissions for online BS programmes, no JEE score required

Indian Express30-04-2025

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) today opened admissions for its online BS Degree Programs in Data Science and Applications and Electronic Systems. These undergraduate programs are designed to be flexible and accessible, providing an alternative route to IIT-quality education without requiring the traditional Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
Applications are open until May 20, 2025, through the official portal: study.iitm.ac.in. The programs are open to all students who have completed Class 12, with no age restrictions or seat limits.
This initiative is part of IIT Madras' broader mission to democratise access to premier technical education. While students qualifying through JEE can gain direct entry, others must complete a four-week online preparatory module and clear an in-person qualifier exam.
Currently, over 38,000 learners are enrolled in these programs, including working professionals, career changers, and students from diverse academic backgrounds. Notably, 25% of the cohort are women, and 20% are over the age of 30, indicating a significant shift from the typical engineering student demographic.
The curriculum is structured to support parallel commitments such as full-time jobs or other degree programs. It also offers multiple exit points, enabling students to earn certificates or diplomas before completing the full degree. The Data Science program is open to students from any academic stream with Class 10-level Mathematics and English, while the Electronic Systems program requires a background in Class 12 Physics and Mathematics.
The academic outcomes have been impressive. In a recent milestone, three students from these BS programs ranked among the top 10 in the GATE 2025 exam for Data Science and AI—including the All India Rank 1.
These online degree programs represent a transformative step in Indian higher education, leveraging technology to reach learners beyond traditional campuses.
IIT Madras, consistently ranked among India's top engineering institutes, has also expanded globally by launching its first international campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, underscoring its growing global presence.

Mukesh Ambani gives Rs 1510000000 ‘Guru Dakshina' to…, he didn't take admission in IIT-Bombay because…

Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, has announced an unconditional grant of Rs 151 crore to the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, his alma mater from the 1970s. On Friday, Ambani spent over three hours at the institute, formerly known as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), attending an event to unveil Divine Scientist , the biography of Professor MM Sharma. When speaking of 'Guru Dakshina', Ambani announced the unconditional grant of Rs 151 crore to ICT according to the instructions of Prof. Sharma. Why Didn't Mukesh Ambani Choose IIT-Bombay? Ambani said, 'Coming to the UDCT campus always feels like visiting a sacred temple. Professor Sharma, I honor you as my most respected teacher, my guide, and a source of inspiration.' Praising Patil, he added, 'Writing about the life of a great personality like Sharma is an immensely challenging task.' Talking about his decision, Ambani said, 'I chose UDCT over IIT-Bombay.' He shared that his decision became firm after attending Sharma's first lecture. 'I realized he was an alchemist not of metals, but of minds. He possesses the ability to transform curiosity into knowledge, knowledge into commercial value, and both knowledge and commercial value into everlasting wisdom.' Ambani credited Professor Sharma for the growth of India's chemical industry and referred to him as the 'National Guru.' Prof. Sharma impressed upon the policymakers that the only way for India to grow was to unshackle Indian industry from license-permit-raj which will allow Indian players to build scale, reduce dependence on imports and compete globally. 'Like my father Dhirubhai Ambani, he had a burning desire to change Indian industry from scarcity to global leadership,' said Ambani. He further added, 'These two bold visionaries believed that science and technology, in alliance with private entrepreneurship, would open the floodgates of prosperity.' (With Inputs From ANI)

IIT-M Pravartak keen on recasting R&D playbook

IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation is building market-facing technologies for the benefit of the public. From mentoring startups and collaborating with corporations to supporting cybersecurity systems for government agencies and making rural children curious about mathematics, its work spans a gamut of disciplines. In an interview with TOI, Dr M J Shankar Raman, CEO of Pravartak, spoke about the challenge of translating academic research into real-world applications and what it means to be a non-profit housed at India's top patent-filing academic institution. Excerpts: What does Pravartak Technologies Foundation do? Funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems, our aim is to take academic research from lab to field. We support entrepreneurship by funding and incubating startups, forging corporate and international R&D partnerships, and bridging the skill gap. Our focus areas include sensors, networking, actuators, big data, machine learning, cybersecurity, and databases. What's your approach to tech development? While IIT-Madras focuses on fundamental research, our goal is to create market-facing solutions. We support startups developing cutting-edge technologies with our subject matter expertise in certain areas. For instance, we assisted Mindgrove (fabless chip startup) in building IoT chips using IIT-M's Shakti microprocessor. Folium, which works on optical fibre-based sensing and SecurWeave, which develops hardware-based platforms to protect critical software. Moreover, we can take up any area with IIT-M's expertise. The idea is to push IIT's research into the mainstream so that it is useful for society. What do you think is your USP? Our incubation extends beyond technological support. We train entrepreneurs in areas such as finance, marketing, help them get customers, connect with venture capitalists (VCs) and handhold them throughout the process. We provide up to Rs 50 lakh funding for our startups. The venture capitalists usually do not fund deep-tech efforts due to the associated risks. This is where organisations like Pravartak can help. We can shoulder some of the risk and help build the customer base, and guide entrepreneurs to pivot based on market realities. In some cases, we hand them to IITMRP for incubation and hope to complement the ecosystem. We also co-develop technologies with companies like Accenture and Samsung, and help firms find domain-specific talent. What are some of your flagship projects? Pravartak Technologies has contributed to real-time translation of parliamentary proceedings into 22 Indian languages, and legal document translation for the Supreme Court, through the Bhashini platform. We work closely with ministries including Defence, Finance, Electronics & IT, and Telecom, giving us experience in translating IP into scalable solutions. I think we have done a commendable job in this. What's your role in skilling? We provide technical skills for both students and working professionals in areas like AI, data analytics, embedded applications, networking. We aim to kindle curiosity in fundamental research among young students by introducing 'Out of the box' programmes focusing on critical thinking in maths. For India to emerge as a key player in innovation, we need to encourage students to understand maths and sciences, not memorise theoretical concepts. We are taking a small step in that. What next? We have raised Rs 300 crore so far, including Rs 170 crore in DST grants. We became self-sufficient as a tech hub well before the mandated five-year window. When you look at R&D in India, there is a lack of private participation and we want to improve this by collaborating more with private institutions. We mentor 40-odd startups out of which six are graduated. We have taken some bold bets from backing efforts to build commercial hyperloop transportation and secure IoT chips and hope to continue this.
