IIT Madras, US researchers study viruses to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the United States are examining viruses in freshwater lakes to see how they influence the environment and human health. The study may help us tackle antibiotic resistance and enhance how we treat water by Dr Karthik Anantharaman, Visiting Professor, Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras, the team worked with more than 20 years' worth of data from 465 water samples collected from a lake in Madison, research employed machine learning software to study the behavior of viruses in their natural habitat. Dr Anantharaman, who is also a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need to track viruses more closely. 'Knowing how viruses change and interact with their environment helps us prepare for outbreaks and understand their role in nature,' he said. Dinesh Kumar (A lab member) VIRUSES SHOW PATTERNS, POTENTIAL IN TACKLING POLLUTION AND SUPERBUGSScientists discovered that viruses have yearly cycles and can affect other organisms in the viruses contained genes that were "borrowed" from their hosts, enabling them to perform essential biological processes. The team also reconstructed more than 1.3 million viral genomes -- the largest dataset of its type to of the hopeful applications is in phage therapy, a method that employs viruses to attack and destroy pathogenic bacteria. It may provide an answer to infections no longer treatable with antibiotics. Patrica Tran sampling lake The research also indicated that pollution can influence the population of viruses. It may aid in creating means to control water quality and mitigate issues such as algal Madras Professor Karthik Raman explained that most viruses provide ecosystem balance, similar to how predators regulate wildlife study, which appeared in Nature Microbiology, was conducted by researchers from IIT Madras, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Texas at Austin. IIT Madras honours school teachers who inspired students to excel in JEE last year
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has organised a two-day demo day on June 9 and 10, where candidates who have qualified in the Joint Engineering Examinations (JEE) will interact with students, alumni, and teachers and visit the facilities on the campus. Candidates unable to travel may participate in the online event to be held on June 3. Offline events are being held at six cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, and Chennai. In Chennai, around 300 students and their parents will participate in the event. The students will also have an opportunity to attend classes that will be conducted by professors. They will visit laboratories and the Centre for Innovation. The aim of the effort is to help students decide their course of study. Institute director V. Kamakoti said the top 100 ranked students invariably choose computer science and engineering over core engineering subjects. 'We conduct several efforts like Shaastra, Saarang, Open House, and CFI Day. We want students to opt for core engineering over CSE,' he said. The institute has introduced awards to honour pre-undergraduate teachers whose efforts were instrumental in their students making it to the institute in 2024-25. The 'First Principles' Teachers' award (FPTA) recognises the teachers who helped the students understand concepts in physics, chemistry, and mathematics within the IIT-JEE syllabus. Institute director V. Kamakoti said students had two methods of learning; one is rote and arriving at the right answer by elimination in JEE. The other is understanding the concept and applying them to arrive at solutions. 'This is the ideal way of learning. This is how school education should be. We wanted to recognise such teachers,' he said. 'We asked the students who was their inspiration and we asked the first year students to nominate their teachers. The second group of students consistently come up with unexpected solutions. This was the reason we decided to honour them,' he said. Sabitha G.J., mathematics teacher from Ida Scudder ICSE School in Vellore, has a personalised way of teaching. Her student Adhil Ahmed, a student of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science said his teacher had motivated and inspired him. 'He would sit alone and solve mathematic problems in the afternoon. I sat with him and encouraged him,' she said. She sometimes uses dance movements and rhymes to teach concepts. Chemistry teacher Anurooop Naik of Bengaluru was nominated by his student Arun Radhakrishnan, a student of Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Mr. Naik said he would use daily incidents to explain concepts. He had a nickname for his students using chemical compounds that helped students remember the concepts. Mr. Naik is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University and taught class 11 and 12 students in Srinagar for three years. He says they were the most enjoyable years so far. He plans to set up his own institute when he finds motivated physics and mathematics teachers. Prathap Haridoss, Dean, academic courses, and Amrutash Misra of AskIITM Initiative, and alumnus also spoke.

IIT-M to hold demo classes to attract JEE rankers
Chennai: To attract top rankers of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will offer demo classes, a glimpse of campus life, and organise interactions with current students for JEE aspirants and their parents on its campus on June 7 and 8. The JEE (advanced) results are expected on June 2. Further, it will organise demo sessions in other cities such as Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi on June 4 and 5. There will be an online session on June 3 as well. "This year, we are aiming to diversify the choices of the top rankers as, for the past 10 years, all top 100 JEE rankers have chosen only computer science engineering. We will introduce the students to opportunities in core engineering branches such as mechanical, civil, and electrical during these interactions," said V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras. "Though seats in all branches are eventually filled through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling, we want students to pursue the branches they are interested in instead of going by the popular choice," he added. Those interested can register on the website "Over the past three years, we witnessed an improvement in closing JEE ranks in many UG programmes offered by IIT Madras. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Homens acima dos 40 anos estão comprando esse óculos militar Óculos Max Saiba Mais Undo We are hopeful of attracting more top rankers into diversified branches such as metallurgical and aerospace engineering," said Prathap Haridoss, dean (academic courses), IIT Madras. Despite IIT-M being the number one ranked institute, IIT Bombay has remained the top choice among top 100 rankers for many years. IIT Madras also introduced the First Principles Teachers Award to recognise exceptional teachers at the higher secondary (pre-university) level in maths, physics, and chemistry this year.. "Usually, students trained by JEE coaching centres struggle to cope in undergraduate programmes due to rote learning. But students trained by these teachers were strong in fundamentals and understood higher-level engineering concepts well," Kamakoti added.
