IIT Madras invites JEE aspirants for campus demo days ahead of Advanced results
Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is organising a series of Demo Day sessions for parents and JEE aspirants, offering a first-hand experience of the campus life, student experiences, and academic setup. These will be held in physical mode in different cities as well as online for those who cannot attend the physical mode.The institute informs that physical Demo Day sessions will be organised in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada, and Hyderabad. Other than this, an online session is planned to be organised on 3 June, where the IIT Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti, along with faculty and alumni, will answer academic and non-academic life questions pertaining to the institute.advertisementThe programme is aimed at helping prospective students and their parents make informed decisions before the admission process. The members will learn about flexibility of courses, life on campus, and support mechanisms for students.
IIT Madras has also introduced changes in the curriculum to offer more flexibility. The students can pick electives from any department, pursue a minor or switch to Inter-Disciplinary Dual Degrees (IDDD). Workshops for first-year students have been reinstated in the academic calendar, giving them two additional weeks of holidays.A compulsory recreation course has also been introduced for the first two semesters to encourage an active lifestyle.In a step towards inclusive education, the institute has also added new categories of admission such as the Fine Arts and Culture Excellence (FACE) and Sports Excellence Admission (SEA), with two additional seats in every BTech and BS programme -- a seat for female candidates.advertisementIIT Madras is also giving scholarships to students. Alumni and CSR partners are giving scholarships to all the BTech students whose family income is between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh. SC/ST students are also exempted from tuition fees regardless of income.IIT Madras is also launching the 'First Principles Teachers Award' to honour outstanding pre-university teachers who have made a strong impact on their students by teaching from first principles.These programs demonstrate IIT Madras's vision of making top-level education accessible and affordable to students with varied backgrounds.

Although mangoes also arrive from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, this season has seen Telangana's Badami variety take the spotlight. However, weather fluctuations have impacted the mango trade this year. Untimely rainfall and an influx of produce have led to a dip in market prices. Currently, Badami mangoes are being sold for around Rs 50 per kg in the retail market, while wholesale rates are between Rs 40 to Rs 42 per kg, making them affordable for the common man. Mohammad Zaheer, a long-time fruit trader in MP's Khandwa, told Local18 that this season has seen a significant arrival of Badami mangoes. 'The rains have caused early ripening, which has led to falling prices across India. But the good news is that customers are benefiting," he said. What Makes Badami Mango Special? From an agricultural perspective, Telangana is known for vast mango orchards, much like how soybean is cultivated in Madhya Pradesh. Zaheer notes that mango production is nature's gift, it can't be predicted or controlled. 'You never know whether a tree will yield 50 kilos or a quintal. It all depends on the weather and luck," he adds. Unlike other fruits, there are no concerns about fake Badami mangoes. Zaheer emphasises, 'Badami mangoes are natural and can't be tampered with. There's no such thing as a fake Badami." What's Next in the Mango Market? Other varieties are slowly entering the mango markets, including Totapuri and Lal Patta from South India. After June 10, North Indian favourites like Dussehri, Langra, and Chausa are expected to arrive in large numbers. Tamil Nadu government schools reopen, nearly two lakh students enrolled in classes 1 to 5
CHENNAI: Government and government-aided schools across Tamil Nadu reopened on Monday after the summer vacation, with the first day of the academic year marked by the distribution of textbooks, notebooks, and other educational kit items to students. Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the distribution drive at the Lady Willingdon Government Model School in Chennai. Speaking to reporters, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said that the government ensured timely delivery of learning materials this year by initiating the tender process early. 'In previous years, though kits were distributed completely, there were delays of several months. On the chief minister's insistence, we made sure that all items, procured at a cost of Rs 1,141 crore, were handed out on the very first day. This practice will continue in the years to come,' he said. As per a 2013 government order, the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation handles the printing and procurement of kit items. These include bags, textbooks, laptops, sanitary napkins, bicycles, uniforms, footwear among others.
