Marcus Theatres' Q1 Loss Widens On Softer Than Expected Box Office Before ‘Minecraft', ‘Sinners' Turned Things Around
Marcus Theatres, the nation's no. 4 chain, saw losses in the March quarter grow to $6.3 million from $5.7 million on a softer box office and higher costs before A Minecraft Movie and Sinners reignited moviegoing in April.
Revenue rose 7.5% to $87.4 million due largely to four more operating days vs the prior year period.

The company cited higher film costs as a percentage of admissions revenues and higher labor expenses vs a strike-crippled Q1 2024.
Attendance rose 7% and average ticket prices fell 5% on the impact of pricing promotions like the $7 Everyday Matinee and Value Tuesday, and an 'unfavorable ticket mix' with an increased number of family films. Captain America: Brave New World, Mufasa: The Lion King, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dog Man and Moana 2 were the top performers.
Concession revenues per customer rose 2.9%.
'While the overall performance of the first quarter film slate was disappointing, the start to the second quarter has exceeded expectations with the smashing success of A Minecraft Movie,' said Theatres president Mark Gramz. 'The box office hot streak continued in April with A Minecraft Movie holding strong and The King of Kings, The Amateur and Sinners exceeding expectations. With the recent strong opening weekend performance of Marvel's Thunderbolt* kicking off the summer movie season, momentum continues to build' ahead of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, F1, Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon.
In April, the circuit announced the addition of three new 270-degree panoramic ScreenX auditoriums in Illinois, Minnesota, and Ohio for the premiere weekend of Thunderbolts*.
Milwaukee-based Marcus has two businesses, movie theaters and hotels. CEO Greg Marcus will host a call with analysts on the quarter at 11 ET.

Billy Joel shares first message with fans since brain disorder diagnosis
Billy Joel is taking his recent brain disorder diagnosis in his stride, according to the director of Billy Joel: And So It Goes. The legendary singer-songwriter, 76, who last month announced he had been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), was notably absent from Wednesday's screening of the new documentary at Tribeca Film Festival. But that didn't stop him from relaying a message to the crowd through the movie's co-director, Susan Lacy. 'We know Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey that to you all. In fact, he said, 'Getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated,'' Lacy told the audience, per Deadline, assuring them that 'he will be back.' Tribeca Film Festival co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal additionally addressed the auditorium, with the latter saying: 'Billy wanted to be with us tonight, but as you may have heard, he's dealing with a health issue and had to postpone his performances, including this one tonight. We know you will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.' 'He's our piano man, a wonderful, integral part of the heartbeat of our city,' De Niro added. 'Tonight, we get to see the man behind the music and behind the legend. You're in for a real treat.' Directed by Lacy and Jessica Levin, Billy Joel: And So It Goes charts the meteoric rise of the five-time Grammy-winner from his humble Long Island beginnings to international stardom. Pulling back the curtain on Joel's private world, it includes unreleased performances, intimate home movies, and never-before-seen behind-the-scenes moments. Billy Joel: And So It Goes will debut on HBO and be available to stream on Max in July. The documentary's world premiere comes weeks after Joel canceled all of his upcoming concerts and tour dates due to his NPH diagnosis. NPH is a condition caused by excess cerebrospinal fluid building up in the brain's ventricles, which leads to increased pressure that compresses brain tissue and can lead to neurological symptoms. The NHS describes it as an uncommon and poorly understood condition that typically affects people over the age of 60. Patients are often diagnosed after they see a doctor because they or a family member are concerned they might be developing dementia, as the symptoms – from memory loss, bladder control issues and trouble walking – can be similar. A statement shared to his official Instagram at the time read: 'This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance. 'Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health,' it continued. 'He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.'

Have I Got News For You will air at 9PM on BBC1 on Friday. The timing was somewhat auspicious given that the show is about to bow out for its 69th season. HIGNFY first launched in the UK in 1990 and continues to attract around 3M viewers, often making it BBC1's most-watched show of the day. Hat Trick Productions, run by Jimmy Mulville, has recently established Have I Got News for You on CNN in America. Filming has concluded on Season 2, and CNN has renewed the comedy show for a third run, which will begin screening in September. Hosted by Roy Wood Jr., along with team captains Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black, the show was ultimately greenlit by Mark Thompson, who is entwined in the history of Have I Got News for You, having served as the BBC's director general. Mulville would have loved for the Musk-Trump imbroglio to play out while the CNN series was in production, but for now, he will have to make do with the story gatecrashing the UK show. Netflix has released the full trailer for Season 3 of one of its biggest young adult hits, Ginny & Georgia, Season 3 of which could be headed down a dark path. The show returns to Netflix June 5 with 10 episodes. Season 2 ended on quite a few chaotic notes, including Georgia (Brianne Howey) getting arrested at her fairytale wedding to Mayor Paul Randolph (Scott Porter). To be clear, Georgia did commit the murder of Tom Fuller, husband of Cynthia Fuller (Sabrina Grdevich), whom she smothered in Season 2 while he was already ailing and in hospice. 'College essay writes itself,' Max jokes. She later expresses deep concern for Ginny to the other two members of their friend group, MANG, Nora (Chelsea Clark) and Abby (Katie Douglas). Until her trial, Georgia will be under house arrest with an ankle monitor, which starts beeping when it needs to be charged. There seems to be tension between Paul and Georgia, though he can be spotted running with Ginny. RELATED: 'I've always known my mom was different,' Ginny's voice plays over scenes of her walking through a parking lot and being judged by her fellow students. 'There's more to her that people don't see.' 'Everyone thinks I'm a violent, unhinged monster,' Howey's voice plays over a scene of her having what looks like a panic attack. 'You can't give up,' Raymond Ablack's Joe, owner of Blue Farm, tells Georgia. 'At least it can't get any worse, right? Except if I go to prison, that would be worse,' she says with Joe next to him. 'I'm not a bad person, but if you come face to face with bad, you become a little bad yourself.' 'Mom needs me,' Ginny tells her father Zion (Nathan Mitchell). 'You think you have the whole story, but you don't.' Paul doesn't want any more secrets between him and Georgia. 'I've been defending my mom to everyone. I'm trying so hard to protect her, but I don't even know if it's the right thing to do,' Ginny says to a solemn looking Marcus (Felix Mallard), who had his own mental health struggles at the end of last season. 'I don't want my mom to go to prison.' Ellen Baker reaches out to comfort Ginny. 'You think she did this?' Paul asks Zion. The clip ends with Georgia chipperly declaring that she and Ginny are 'ride or die,' which they have been since the show's first season.
