Soccer legend Lionel Messi scores twice in Inter Miami's 4-1 win over CF Montréal
Lionel Messi put on a show Saturday in Montreal.
The Argentine superstar — widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time — delivered two stellar goals and added an assist to lead Inter Miami past CF Montréal 4-1 in MLS play at a raucous Saputo Stadium.
Messi scored in the first half with a curling shot into the bottom-left corner. Then he dribbled down the midfield, sliced through several blue jerseys and finished into the top-right corner for a highlight-reel goal in the second half, bringing fans to their feet.
Tadeo Allende and Telasco Segovia also scored for Miami (9-3-5), which returned to MLS action after playing in the FIFA Club World Cup. Miami dropped out of the tournament in the round of 16 last Sunday with a 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, was named to Miami's starting 11 alongside fellow former FC Barcelona stars Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Prince Owusu replied with his fourth goal in four games for Montreal (3-13-5). Marco Donadel's side sits last in the Eastern Conference and has just one home win in 10 outings, a 1-0 victory over New York City FC last Saturday.
The sellout crowd featured plenty of Argentine blue and Inter Miami pink — one fan even wore a Messi tracksuit and goat mask.
Fans chanted 'Messi! Messi! Messi!' throughout the match. And when Messi took a corner kick early on, spectators left their seats and piled into the lower parts of the stands to get a closer look.
Hordes of fans also swarmed a downtown Montreal hotel to catch a glimpse of the global icon after he landed in Montreal on Friday night. Many more lined the streets with signs outside Saputo Stadium hours before kickoff to watch Messi step off the team bus.
It was Messi's fourth match on Canadian soil, and second in Montreal.
The 38-year-old played his first professional game in Canada on May 11, 2024, when he was held off the scoresheet in a 3-2 Miami win over Montreal.
Saturday's match looked a little different.
Trailing 1-0, Miami equalized in the 33rd minute when Allende scored with a long-range shot after receiving the ball from Messi.
Miami's superstar gave the crowd more to cheer for in the 40th by dribbling into the box, cutting to his left foot and curling a shot to give the visiting side a 2-1 lead.
Messi even factored into Owusu's opening goal, putting the ball on a platter for Montreal's striker with a costly giveaway in the game's second minute. Owusu only needed one touch to blast a shot past Miami 'keeper Óscar Ustari from the edge of the box.
Segovia gave Miami a 3-1 lead in the 62nd minute with a superb shot off the crossbar and in.
Two minutes later, Messi danced through the Montreal defence with the ball on a string and buried his second of the night — and 12th of the season.
Messi appeared to score a hat-trick goal in second-half stoppage time, but the play was ruled offside.
Miami outshot Montreal 15-13 (9-8 on target) and held 58 per cent of possession.
Montreal hosts the Canadian Premier League's Forge FC in the second leg of the Canadian Championship quarter-final Wednesday.

MIAMI (AP) — Sandy Alcantara admitted that Thursday was one of the hardest days of his career. It has been thought all season that the Miami Marlins could move on from Alcantara amid their rebuilding project, which has included shipping out established players for prospects. And as Thursday's 6 p.m. trade deadline approached, the Marlins ace could not hide his nerves. He sat in front of his television watching baseball programming with his family for most of the day, repeatedly checking his phone to see if he had been traded. 'It was hard, man,' Alcantara said Friday. 'Every time I get on my phone, I see my name. I thought that I was leaving.' Miami opted not to trade its 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner. In their only trade Thursday, the Marlins sent their longest-tenured position player in outfielder Jesús Sánchez to the Houston Astros for right-hander Ryan Gusto and two prospects, infielder Chase Jaworsky and outfielder Esmil Valencia. The rest of the team, which has won five straight series and went 15-10 in July, remains intact. Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix said Friday that the club's recent success, in part, factored into its approach at the deadline. And manager Clayton McCullough said if there weren't trade scenarios that 'moved the needle for us in the near and the long term,' the Marlins were happy to continue competing with the group they have. Amid what was expected to be a season of finding out which of its relatively inexperienced pieces Miami could build around in the future, the Marlins are third in the National League East at 52-55 and entered Friday seven games behind San Diego for the National League's third wild-card spot. Bendix declined to say how close Miami was to finalizing a trade for Alcantara but noted that the team 'felt really comfortable' with its ultimate decision. 'All of the things that go into building a sustainably successful team were taken into consideration,' he said, 'at a deadline where you have all of these decisions in front of you. It's our job to be disciplined. Disciplined means listening, means having conversations, and then means trying to figure out the best decision to make for every decision point that we have.' Alcantara has played most of his eight-year career in Miami, going 47-64 with a 3.64 ERA in 159 starts while becoming the first Miami player to win the Cy Young Award after a 2022 season in which he pitched a league-high 228 innings and six complete games. Alcantara, 29, missed the 2024 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and hasn't yet returned to form in 2025. He is 6-9 with a 6.36 ERA, and despite being known as one of MLB's most durable starters, has only pitched seven innings once. He said it has taken a new level of mental toughness to play through a season not knowing if he would finish the year with the Marlins. 'It was a little hard because everywhere you go, every time you grab your phone, you see your name on the media,' Alcantara said. 'But you (can't) think too much about it. TORONTO – Unhappy at his contract demands, Toronto FC traded winger/wingback Tyrese Spicer to Orlando City SC on Friday in exchange for up to $550,000 (all figures in U.S. dollars) in general allocation money. The 24-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international, the first overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, scored six goals and added two assists in 42 appearances across all competitions in his two seasons with Toronto. 'We would like to thank Tyrese for his time at the club over the past year and a half,' Toronto GM Jason Hernandez said in a statement. 'As our MLS SuperDraft pick, our intention was to continue working and growing with Tyrese. However, it was communicated that the player only wanted to continue with the club if certain contractual commitments and conditions were secured this summer. 'Unfortunately, the terms proposed were not acceptable to the club at this time; hence, we decided to find a mutually beneficial transaction for all parties involved. We wish Tyrese all the best in his future endeavours, and we will prepare to utilize the assets received in our future roster transactions.' Spicer is making $83,122 this season, third lowest among TFC players. His contract expires at the end of the season, although Toronto had club options in 2026 and '27. Faced with a contract impasse, the team opted to get something for him now rather than lose him for nothing. Toronto gets $225,000 in general allocation money this year and $275,000 in 2026 — with an additional $50,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance-based metrics are met. Toronto will retain a sell-on percentage in the event of a future permanent transfer. Spicer has won six caps for Trinidad and Tobago, making his senior debut in March in a CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification match against Cuba. In going to Orlando (11-6-8), Spicer joins a club in sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, six places and 20 points ahead of Toronto (5-13-6). 'We're excited to welcome Tyrese to Orlando,' said Ricardo Moreira, Orlando's GM and sporting director. At his best, Spicer was a pacy winger able to cause headaches for opposition defenders. He made his TFC debut off the bench in a 2-1 loss at New York City FC in March 2024. A week later, he scored 35 minutes into his first start, a 2-0 win over Atlanta United at BMO Field. Cutting off the left wing, Spicer drifted towards the penalty box and, taking a pass from Deandre Kerr, accelerated past a defender and beat Brad Guzan with a low shot to the corner. Unable to secure regular playing time, Spicer was an on-and-off presence, however. His 21 league appearances this season included only seven starts. Last season, he started 13 games with six more appearances off the bench. As a rookie, he was slowed by a sore big toe, the legacy of a small fracture suffered at Lipscomb, forcing him to see a specialist. He led the ASUN with 14 goals and added three assists for a conference-leading 31 points. Matt Turner joins Revolution on loan from Lyon as he looks to get back to national team form
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matt Turner is returning to his MLS roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as U.S. national team's goalkeeper. Turner will join the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Lyon through June 2026, the Revolution announced Friday. The deal includes an option to purchase the contract of Turner, who will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026.
