Fund drive for Sabarimala idol: Kerala HC intervenes

Time of India17-07-2025
Kochi: High court on Thursday intervened in the matter concerning the collection of funds from Tamil Nadu by a private party for installing a 'Panchaloha Vigraham' (an idol made of an alloy of gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron) of Lord Ayyappa within the Sabarimala temple premises.
A bench of Justices Anil K Narendran and S Muralee Krishna directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to issue an advisory on the Virtual-Q platform clarifying that no person has been authorised to install such an idol, nor has anyone been permitted to collect money from the purpose. The direction was issued based on a report by the Sabarimala special commissioner.
According to the report, E K Sahadevan, chairman of Lotus Multispeciality Hospital and IVF Fertility Centre, Erode, allegedly circulated a pamphlet claiming that the TDB had permitted him to install the Panchaloha Vigraham and it would not interfere with the temple structure or rituals.
The idol would be 2 feet in height, weigh 108kg and cost around Rs 9 lakh. The pamphlet also contained details of a bank account number and a mobile number for the public to contribute funds.
However, the report noted that the Sabarimala tantri has stated that he has no knowledge of such an initiative and that installing an idol would violate temple rituals and affect the sanctity of the principal deity. The report also included a communication from the TDB secretary to the Sabarimala executive officer, stating that the board had decided to permit the installation of an idol of Lord Ayyappa within the temple premises, 'without causing any kind of hindrance to the structure and rituals of the temple.

While considering the matter, the TDB's standing counsel, on telephonic instructions from the executive officer, submitted that no official permission has been granted to install the idol or collect money from the public. HC, however, directed the counsel to produce the relevant files relating to the communication by Friday, and adjourned the matter.

PM-KISAN payout helps farmers buy diesel for tractors in State

New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 20th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Saturday expressed gratitude, saying the scheme has significantly helped them buy diesel for tractors, and pay wages to labourers. The PM-KISAN scheme has been a crucial support for farmers during difficult times. In Karnataka's Dharwad district, farmers said that the PM-KISAN initiative is making a positive impact on their agricultural activities. The funds help not only in purchasing seeds and fertilisers but also in managing household expenses, including school and college fees for their children. The scheme, launched by the PM Modi government, aims to provide income support to small and marginal farmers across the country. Under PM-KISAN, eligible farmers receive Rs 6,000 annually in three equal installments directly into their bank accounts. Speaking to IANS, farmers shared how the scheme has improved their lives. Nagappa Ganiger, a farmer from Dharwad, said, 'The PM-KISAN scheme has been a great help during tough times. It has enabled me to buy diesel for tractors and pay wages to labourers on time. So far, 20 installments have been credited to my account without fail. I am thankful to Prime Minister Modi.' Another farmer, Basavaraj Gunjal, added, 'With the aim of doubling farmers' income, Prime Minister Modi has introduced several farmer-friendly initiatives. The Rs 6,000 annual support through PM-KISAN has been a real benefit. On behalf of all farmers, I express my sincere thanks to him.'

1.6 lakh at Bengal govt's ‘Amader Para' camps with local problems on launch day

KOLKATA: Bengal govt's people-centric initiative 'Amader Para Amader Samadhan' (APAS) recorded 1.6 lakh footfall across 632 camps on the day of its launch on Saturday. The scheme, announced by CM Mamata Banerjee last month, is aimed at solving neighbourhood problems from 80,000 local-level booths. With a fund allotment of Rs 8,000 crore, or Rs 10 lakh per booth, the two-month-long programme will aim at finding local quick-fix solutions to problems such as broken water pumps, blocked drains and out-of-order electric posts. In Kolkata, APAS booths were set up in wards 10, 13, 48 and 70 on Saturday. Mayor Firhad Hakim was present at Bhowanipore's ward 70, which is part of the CM's constituency, to lend an ear to people's grievances. Ashok Gupta, a resident of Bishop Lefroy Road, complained that their neighbourhood, while well-decked, had a kabadiwala shop that was an eyesore. 'Many foreigners visit the area to see the house where Satyajit Ray lived. Currently, his son Sandip Ray lives there. I plead to the administration to relocate the shop,' he said, adding that smoke from a local eatery's kitchen was also an irritant. At APAS camps, local people will deliberate, identify and prioritise local-level infrastructure needs, she wrote. An official said citizens will have to register for APAS camps, where representatives will decide on allocation of funds from the Rs 10-lakh kitty. 'Problems raised by citizens will be uploaded on the APAS portal. The administration will review the decision on use of funds and finalise it. The funds can be used for construction or renovation of drains, infrastructure for water supply, arranging street lights and electrical repairs, setting up toilets and ICDS centres, minor repair of schools and classrooms, desilting of ponds, setting up of waste bins and benches in public places, building bus stop sheds, footbridges over water bodies and even community gyms,' he added. In the APAS camp of ward 13 in Ultadanga area, both local councillor Anindya Raut and MLA Supti Pandey heard grievances of people and assured help. The camp at Salt Lake CJ block was attended by Bidhhanagar mayor Krishna Chakraborty. In New Town, the fairground was used as a camp where residents highlighted issues like damaged pavements, lack of street lights and drainage issues, said Anupam Maity, member, Jyangra Hatiara II gram panchayat. Modi's Swadeshi push amid global uncertainty

Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi onSaturday called on citizens to adopt the spirit of "Swadeshi" and support locally-made products, stressing that true service to the nation lies in promoting indigenous goods, especially amid "global economic uncertainties". Addressing a public meeting in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi, Modi said, "As we talk about economic progress, I want to draw your attention to the current global scenario. "The world economy is facing instability and uncertainty. In such times, countries are focusing solely on their own interests. India, too, is on the path to becoming the world's third-largest economy and must remain alert to its own economic priorities." The Prime Minister's renewed push for 'Swadeshi' (indigenous) comes amid the US announcing tariffs on exports from about 70 nations, including India. According to the White House order, India now faces tariffs of 25 per cent for its exports to the US. Emphasising that farmers, small industries and employment for youths are the top-most priorities for the government, Modi said, "The government is doing everything possible in this direction. But as citizens, we too have responsibilities." Calling for a national movement to support local products, the Prime Minister said, "This is not just about Modi saying it, every Indian should say this -- if we want India to become the third-largest economy, every political party and every leader, keeping aside their hesitations, must work in the nation's interest and awaken the spirit of Swadeshi among the people." He also urged people to be conscious consumers, saying, "Whatever we buy, we should ask ourselves -- has an Indian toiled to make this? If it has been made by the sweat of our people, with their skills, that product is Swadeshi for us. We must adopt the mantra of 'Vocal for Local'." Making a special appeal to traders and shopkeepers, the Prime Minister said, "At a time when the world is going through uncertainty, let us take a pledge to sell only Swadeshi goods from our shops and markets. Promoting made in India goods will be the truest service to the country." With the festival and wedding seasons approaching, the prime minister encouraged people to ensure that all new purchases are made in India. He recalled how many citizens who were planning to hold wedding events abroad shifted them to India after his earlier appeal. "The feeling of Swadeshi in every action will define our future. This will also be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Only through collective effort can we fulfil the dream of a developed India," Modi said. The prime minister was addressing a massive public gathering on Saturday in Banauli village, Sevapuri, Varanasi. During his one-day visit to the city, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 52 projects worth around Rs 2,200 crore. He also transferred Rs 20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of over 9.70 crore farmers under the 20th installment of the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi scheme. A short film showcasing the success and impact of the scheme on farmers was also screened during the event. The PM highlighted the government's farmer-centric policies in detail. He said the government is constantly working for the well-being of farmers. Under previous governments, promises made in the name of farmers were rarely fulfilled, but the BJP government delivers what it promises, he said. He cited the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi as proof of the government's firm commitment and recalled how opposition parties like the Samajwadi Party and Congress had spread rumours in 2019, claiming the scheme would stop after elections or the money would be taken back. "Has a single installment stopped over the years? The PM-KISAN scheme is running without any break," he said. Presenting data, he shared that nearly Rs 3.75 lakh crore has been transferred directly to farmers' accounts so far. In Uttar Pradesh alone, 2.5 crore farmers have received over Rs 90,000 crore, while farmers from Kashi have got Rs 900 crore. Modi emphasised the transparency of the scheme, saying there are no cuts, commissions or middlemen. "We have created a permanent system where there's no leakage and no one can steal the rights of the poor," he added. Referring to his development mantra, "the more backward someone is, the higher the priority", the PM spoke about the newly approved PM Dhan Dhanya Agriculture Scheme, which will focus on underdeveloped districts with lower crop production and income.
