
Virtual idols, real fans: Hololive's bet on the future of pop
An anticipatory hush falls over the thousands gathered at Makuhari Messe on March 8 for a concert. Momentarily, they'll learn which animated performer will be the first to entertain them for the next three hours. A red triangle briefly materializes on stage, triggering a quick wave of recognition that breaks the silence before Omaru Polka pops up to excited screams.
She rips into an original song, shouting a relentless stream of 'po po po po po po po' against a hyperactive video game soundtrack. The crowd, waving glow sticks set to Polka's trademark red, chants along.
For the next three hours, the venue fills with what some are betting is the future of entertainment, and it comes courtesy of Hololive (stylized in lowercase), an industry-leading talent agency operated by tech company Cover, which manages virtual YouTubers, better known as VTubers. Polka's performance kicks off one of three sold-out shows surrounding Hololive Super Expo, a multiday event celebrating VTuber culture. Here, online personalities represented by anime-style avatars sing and chat with the thousands of fans who are physically present, with many more joining online.
Several days after the expo, Cover founder and CEO Motoaki Tanigo is elated by how things went. Speaking from the company's office in Tokyo's Minato Ward, he tells The Japan Times he is thinking beyond the short term. '3D-related content is only getting bigger,' he says.
Once a niche genre in the 2010s, VTubing has grown into an industry projected to reach $8 billion by 2033, according to Verified Market Reports — with Hololive as a major player.
In Japan, Hololive talent has collaborated with a wide range of companies (as well as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government) in a way that has pushed VTubers further into the mainstream. Many have become online stars, often crossing over into the real world.

'(Hololive is) best-known for having one of the largest fan bases in VTubing — and their success in the industry attracts fans and potential talents to either join the agency or set up their own,' says Jay Agonoy, editor and publisher of the website VTuber NewsDrop.
VTubing is one of Japan's biggest creative success stories of the past decade — and it's now starting to flourish worldwide. For Hololive, that has meant expanding into Indonesian and English markets. Still, Tanigo has even bigger goals. 'We want to be a company that can compete on the international stage,' he says.
Virtual avatars, real potential
Not long after founding Cover in 2016, Tanigo realized VTubing wasn't just a novelty — it was a business with serious potential.
'We did a demonstration of our technology for investors,' he says. 'The reaction, especially from those outside Japan, was really impressive. That's when we knew we had something.'
Hololive emerged just as VTubing started gaining momentum. The idea of digital artists performing via avatars wasn't new — Horipro's Kyoko Date had tried and flopped in the 1990s, with Vocaloid software avatar Hastune Miku proving more successful in the late 2000s (although it was a larger community rather than a single person that brought that character to life). However, the arrival of Kizuna Ai in 2016 changed everything. She coined the term 'virtual YouTuber' and helped push the concept of a single person using a digital character to express themselves into the mainstream. Still, the blueprint wasn't entirely original.
'We operate an idol group similar to AKB48,' Tanigo said in a 2019 talk at Globis University, referencing the megapopular J-pop girl group with dozens of members. His words quickly went viral, with fans joking about Hololive's chaotic, unfiltered streams, where talents curse and discuss R-rated topics in ways AKB48 mastermind Yasushi Akimoto would never allow from his idols.
There's truth in Tanigo's assessment, though. The sheer size of the Hololive roster — over 90 creators — mirrors the super-sized lineups of AKB48 and its sister groups from the mid 2010s. The numbers mean it's possible for anyone to find their favorite and become a fan within the greater group ecosystem.
'It all depends on what the talents (themselves) want to do,' Tanigo says of the people and marketing behind the avatars. Still, variety helps. VTubing exploded during the pandemic as audiences stuck at home binged streams on YouTube. Now, music is just as powerful a gateway. Fans might not have time to watch a full stream, but they can listen to VTuber tracks when they're out and about. In response, Hololive has put greater emphasis on music, expanding VTuber music acts such as ReGloss and Flow Glow.
In many ways, Hololive's talents resemble the idols of yesteryear — only with fewer restrictions. AKB48 came up in an era where entertainment companies controlled every move their stars made. VTubers, by contrast, interact directly with fans across digital platforms, unfiltered, unpolished and free to be themselves. Ironically, for all their animated avatars, they seem more human.

VTuber News Drop's Agony points out another difference in that, unlike with Akimoto, 'Most English-speaking fans forgive Tanigo if Cover makes mistakes, as long as Hololive's talents are treated well.' The support remains strong, even after a string of high-profile 'graduations' (idol-speak for departures) from the agency. 'You rarely see that kind of reverence toward other executives in this young VTuber industry.'
Tanigo, whom fans have nicknamed 'Yagoo,' has himself become a celebrity within the Hololive universe. In person, he's straightforward, business-focused and extremely hospitable. (Maybe too much so. At the end of our chat, I ask about his plans for the rest of the day. He smiles and says, 'I have to go to a meeting that started 10 minutes ago.') Fans see him as a hero, and when he made a surprise appearance at a Los Angeles meet-up, the crowd went wild.
No longer niche
It's July 5, 2024, and the top of the seventh inning at Dodger Stadium has ended. That means it's time to sing 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame.' And leading the singalong? An anime girl who is part shark.
Gawr Gura, the biggest English-language VTuber on the planet, appears on the jumbotron, her cartoonish grin beaming down on the crowd.
It's the peak of Hololive Night, a crossover between the VTuber agency and the Los Angeles Dodgers — home to another Japanese icon, Shohei Ohtani. The event is a hit — though fans endure hours-long lines for exclusive merchandise — and marks one of the most ambitious leaps VTubing has made into the American mainstream.
Hololive isn't the only major player in this space. Rival agency Nijisanji, operated by AnyColor Inc., packed Makuhari Messe the weekend before Hololive Super Expo and has its own global ambitions. But Hololive has so far drawn the most international attention, a feat Tanigo attributes to the growing popularity of anime and gaming. 'There's no need for verbal communication in video games — it goes beyond language barriers,' he says.
'Hololive wasn't the first company to integrate elements of idol culture into VTubing, but they've been the most successful in carrying that idea into the English-speaking market,' Agony says, citing the debut of first-generation English talents, collectively known as 'Myth,' in September 2020. Additionally, he points out that Hololive's Indonesian branch has carved out a solid fanbase as well.
Not everything has been smooth sailing. In 2020, Hololive's most popular streamer implied Taiwan was an independent country, sparking outrage among Chinese netizens. The backlash was so intense that Cover shut down its Chinese branch entirely. Still, Hololive's growth has been steady. Besides Hololive Night, the agency has staged concerts in Los Angeles and New York.
'We have to think about how to do things not just on site but also online, in a way to deliver content to the fans,' Tanigo says. 'And we need to collaborate with American businesses to be more present in the U.S.'

In Japan, brand partnerships have helped popularize Hololive talents. VTubers now pop up on TV and in marketing campaigns. Hoshimachi Suisei, one of Hololive's top music-focused talents, recently sold out Nippon Budokan and landed campaigns with Parco, Converse and, as of this week, McDonald's — appearing alongside J-pop heavyweights Yoasobi and Ado.
In the U.S., VTubing remains a niche but expanding cultural force. Tanigo says his company is working on more live events and collaborations this year, plus a global mobile game release and an English-language version of its hit trading card game.
Tanigo sees the broader appeal of Japanese entertainment as a rising tide that can lift VTubing further—but he believes true global success requires a united front.
'With K-pop, you had Samsung and other companies in South Korea pushing to put the music into the Western market,' he says, adding that Japan shouldn't rely on just one company to drive anime-based entertainment worldwide. 'It should be several big companies — and Japanese industries — working to help one another.'
Korean entertainment also had government backing, something Tanigo says could be useful in Japan. 'When you make collaborations with other companies, you sometimes don't break even. The government could help with financial support to further spread Japanese pop culture.'
Compared to the rigidity of J-pop, the world of VTubers is looser, more chaotic and ultimately more diverse. A growing, dedicated fandom has made the choice to live there, Tanigo and his team are betting you'll do the same.

Imperial Household Agency's YouTube channel surpasses 100,000 subscribers
The Imperial Household Agency was given the Silver Creator Award for reaching 100,000 subscribers on its official YouTube channel for public outreach, a surprising milestone for a monarchy that has traditionally shunned social media. 'YouTube has multigenerational viewership. So we decided that it was an effective way to convey what the imperial family does to an even larger audience,' a spokesperson from the Imperial Household Agency told The Japan Times after it received the award on Thursday. Launched on April 1, the channel surpassed 100,000 subscribers within its first week. As of Monday, the number of subscribers had risen to around 138,000. The channel has a variety of content, including videos of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attending ritual ceremonies, meeting with foreign dignitaries, visiting the victims of natural disasters and speaking at news conferences. The latest post featured members of the imperial family greeting guests at a spring garden party at the Akasaka Imperial Gardens in Tokyo on April 22. Comments are turned off on all posts over concerns that some viewers may share misinformation or write hateful messages. 'For the comment (section) to become flooded is, well, not what we want. And of course, we are worried that such a thing would happen,' the spokesperson said. The imperial family's YouTube debut came a year after the Imperial Household Agency created an Instagram account that now has nearly 2 million followers. In addition to its social media outreach, the agency is hosting a free quiz game event in the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace until 2027. In its budget for fiscal 2025, which began in April, the agency was allocated ¥27 million ($187,000) for public relations expenses, including costs for filming content. The agency's Public Relations Office was established in 2023 following excessive media scrutiny against then-Princess Mako, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, who left the imperial family after marrying a commoner in October 2021. Tabloids and internet trolls spread misinformation about the financial disputes surrounding the mother of the groom, a scandal which provoked backlash against the imperial family. Instead of issuing a rebuttal on its website, the Imperial Household Agency remained silent, sparking criticism over its media strategy, or lack thereof. Crown Prince Akishino said at a news conference in November that while he welcomes the Imperial Household Agency's use of social media, it is still difficult for the agency to cope with "bullying-like" messages targeting his family. 'It's nearly been a year since the Imperial Household Agency started its Instagram. Before, there was only a website, but by using Instagram, we've been able to share the movements of the emperor and empress in a timely manner, which I think is a great improvement,' he said. However, he added that in today's society, where anyone can send out information both good and bad, it is difficult to grasp just how many malicious messages would be posted and read by the public. In such a situation, it is unknown how society would react if the Imperial Household Agency protested certain messages, making it difficult for the agency to respond to negative messages.

Digital divas: Can Japan's virtual YouTuber craze crack America?

Pink-haired musician and livestreamer Mori Calliope looks just like a character from an anime, brought to life on stage through a hologram-like illusion. "I don't really like most streamers, but then when I discovered VTubers, I realized, 'Hey, you know, I'm actually into this,'" says Calliope concert attendee Luigi Galvan. "They look like anime characters. I like anime, so it was easy to get into the VTuber format that way." The actors behind VTubers use motion capture techniques to communicate directly online with fans, who can pay to highlight their comments to the character and other viewers. Platforms like Netflix have helped take Japanese anime mainstream, and Calliope's Tokyo-based talent agency wants its roster of virtual YouTubers, or VTubers, to be the country's next big cultural export. Nearly half of top VTuber agency Cover Corp.'s virtual stars under its famous Hololive (stylized in lowercase) brand speak primarily in English, not Japanese, and the company recently opened a U.S. office to accelerate business in North America. Tokyo-based QY Research predicts that the once-niche VTuber market will make almost $4 billion annually worldwide by 2030, up from $1.4 billion in 2024. Does Calliope think virtual YouTubers can really crack the U.S. market? "A couple of years ago, my firm stance was, 'No, it won't,'" says the entertainer, who has over 2.5 million YouTube subscribers. "But these days, I like to be a little more hopeful." Korean rivals Calliope, who playfully calls herself a "Grim Reaper" on a mission "to harvest souls," likes black gothic outfits that contrast with her long pink hair. An alter ego helps audiences "see and appreciate you for what lies within" instead of age or looks, allowing VTubers' talent as musicians and raconteurs to shine, she says. The actor behind this VTuber wished to remain anonymous like most in the industry. Calliope is one of Cover Corp.'s more than 80 Hololive VTubers, who together have 80 million YouTube subscribers globally, from Indonesia to Canada. While Japan reigns supreme in the VTuber world, the country could face fierce competition from neighboring cultural superpower South Korea in the coming years, warns Cover Corp.'s CEO Motoaki Tanigo. "Aspiring K-pop singers have survived tough training and are already professional," making the country a potential goldmine for VTuber actors, he says. "Can we easily find people like that in Japan? Of course not." South Korean VTuber companies "stand a good chance of growing exponentially" in the important U.S. market because American audiences prefer polished performers, Tanigo says. In contrast, in Japan, fans often cherish the process of unskilled idols evolving, he explains. Global expansion can also come with political risks, with one popular Hololive streamer incurring the wrath of Chinese viewers by inadvertently suggesting self-ruled Taiwan — which Beijing claims as its own — was a country. Human touch While VTubers live in a digital world, Tanigo says the human element behind the characters is an important part of their appeal. "In principle, we won't" use generative AI technology to create new virtual talents, he says. "This whole business is based on fans' desire to support someone because of their extraordinary artistic talent," Tanigo says. "I think fans would be left feeling confused as to what, or who, they are rooting for." "You can make a character with AI, but you can't make a person with AI because that's what makes the VTubers who they are," the San Diego resident says. In the rapidly growing, competitive industry, VTubers risk overexerting themselves by livestreaming almost nonstop to grow their fandom. "The longer they go on livestreaming, the more fans watch them," says Takeshi Okamoto, a media studies professor at Japan's Kindai University. "This can potentially amount to exploitation of their passion for the job." Yet the professor — who himself doubles as a zombie-like VTuber — sees a bright future for the industry. With the popularity of virtual worlds like the Metaverse, "a day might come where it becomes more normal for us to live as avatars," he says. "Our lives, then, could more seamlessly fuse with VTuber stars."

‘The Brothers Kitaura': A sordid tale of filial impropriety
Corpse disposal is a complicated business even at the best of times. All the more so if you're as hapless as the eponymous protagonists of 'The Brothers Kitaura.' Masaki Tsujino's sophomore feature, which won the Critics' Picks Competition at last year's Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, is a tale of desperation compounded by incompetence and self-interest. When its characters find themselves in over their heads, they keep digging. At the start of the film, older sibling Sota (Masaaki Nakano) is in a state of arrested development: unemployed, work-shy and still living with his elderly father, Goichi (Taka Takao). He may be in his 40s, but Sota acts like an eternal teen, sleeping in late, getting up to no good when he's home alone and leaving his dad to do all the cooking. So when the latter threatens to turf him out in favor of a potential marriage partner, the ungrateful son chooses fight over flight, leading to an altercation that ends with Goichi lying dead on the kitchen floor. Unaccustomed to having to clean up his own mess, Sota enlists the help of his estranged brother, Akira (Hirota Otsuka), who's already in a bit of a pickle himself. Once the family's high-flier, the younger Kitaura is now facing personal ruin after an email blunder led to him getting fired for sexual harassment, then served divorce papers by his wife. You'd think he wouldn't want to add 'accessory to murder' to his list of problems, but he's more concerned about his job prospects than doing the right thing. I mean, who's going to hire the brother of a convicted killer, right? This is a much more acerbic film than Tsujino's debut feature, 'A Tale of the Riverside' (2020). Reviewing that movie for The Japan Times, Mark Schilling noted that all of its characters were ultimately likable, but Sota and Akira are too busy squabbling among themselves to earn the audience's sympathy. They're paragons of a very middle-class brand of mediocrity. Thanks to the financial safety net their father provided, both have reached middle age without ever having to take much initiative. Their attempts to get rid of their benefactor's corpse — a symbolic act, if ever you wanted one — are predictably pathetic. 'The Brothers Kitaura' features some impressive displays of ineptitude (as when the brothers try to squeeze the body into an obviously undersized suitcase), punctuated by extended bouts of bickering and inertia. After unintentionally offing his father, Sota's first reaction is to drape a towel over the dead man's face and retire to bed. The film recalls an earlier generation of movies about patricide, such as Terrence Malick's 'Badlands' (1973) and Kazuhiko Hasegawa's 'The Youth Killer' (1976), except in this case, the kids aren't exactly young themselves. Tsujino's script could probably have done more with this: Although there's an element of social critique here, it mostly takes a backseat to the bumbling neo-noir shenanigans. These are entertaining, although the obviously cash-strapped production struggles to pull off some of its big set pieces. Tsujino's background in shōgekijō (small-scale theater) also manifests itself in an unfortunate tendency to let scenes run on for too long, in the manner of an improv comedy skit that doesn't know when to end. But when the curtain finally falls on this sordid family affair, it's a delicious kiss-off.
