IndiGo appoints Ton Dortmans to lead A350 service, MRO growth plans
Dortmans brings four decades of experience from his time at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. He spent the last 13 years there as Executive Vice President of Engineering and Maintenance.
Supporting IndiGo's growth strategy
In line with IndiGo's strategic plan, 'Towards New Heights and Across New Frontiers', introduced in mid-2022, the airline has been launching various growth initiatives. One major step includes the order of Airbus A350 wide-body aircraft, expected to start arriving in 2027. These aircraft, equipped with Rolls-Royce engines, mark a significant step as IndiGo enters the wide-body segment for the first time.
With a current fleet of over 400 aircraft and more than 900 on order, IndiGo is working to develop extensive in-house MRO capabilities in India. As part of this effort, the airline opened its second hangar in Bengaluru in 2023.
Dortmans will report to Chief Operating Officer Isidro Porqueras and work closely with Senior Vice President of Engineering, Parichay Dutta. IndiGo has also set up an office in Amsterdam to support its expansion in Europe. From July 2025, flights to Manchester and Amsterdam are set to begin.
Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers said, 'Ton has a wealth of experience in the field of MRO and wide-body airline operations that IndiGo will benefit from. At IndiGo, we are delighted and grateful that, post retiring from his illustrious KLM career, Ton will join us to support IndiGo's team for the next phase to become a Global Aviation player. The opportunity to develop such MRO capabilities in-house for IndiGo in India with home-grown talent and the volumes of our operation was just not to be missed.'
Vikram Singh Mehta appointed IndiGo's new chairman
In a separate announcement, IndiGo has named Vikram Singh Mehta as the new chairman of its board. He will take over from Venkataramani Sumantran, who has served as chairman for the past three years.
Sumantran stepped down following the completion of his five-year term as a board member, as stated in an exchange filing. 'Sumantran was appointed as the Chairman of the Board in May 2022 and post Covid, navigated the Board during IndiGo's strong recovery and incredible growth over the past three years,' the company noted.

With the improved financial condition of the Board, the state government has also ensured financial benefits for employees. For the financial year 2024-25, an amount of Rs. 368.89 crore has been approved for gratuity, medical reimbursement, revised pension arrears and leave encashment a significant increase from Rs. 87.56 crore in the previous year. Out of this, Rs. 187.86 crore have already been disbursed by 31 July, 2025. This reflects the sensitivity and commitment of the state government to employee welfare.

Lucknow airport set for runway expansion, more int'l flights
LUCKNOW Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (CCSIA) is set to undergo a runway expansion, increasing its length from 2744 metres to 3500 metres. Once complete, the extended runway will make it possible to launch direct flights from Lucknow to the US and Europe, a long-standing public demand. Currently, Lucknow offers direct international flights to 11 destinations — including Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. (File Photo) This upgrade is essential to accommodate large, fuel-laden wide-body aircraft capable of flying non-stop to distant global destinations. The move aims to enable non-stop long-haul international flights, especially to destinations in America and Europe, which currently require passengers to connect via Delhi, Mumbai, or other metro airports. Currently, Lucknow offers direct international flights to 11 destinations — including Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. The airport administration's long-pending proposal to extend the runway has received in-principle approval from the government. The district magistrate has now sought detailed land records from the airport authorities to kickstart the land acquisition process. Once the necessary 53 acres of land is acquired, the existing runway will be extended by 700 metres. District magistrate Vishak G said: 'I have sought all the Gata-wise land records from the airport administration so that the process of land acquisition could be completed at the earliest. The airport expansion is an important process for the state capital.' If acquisition is completed and construction begins on schedule in the next three months, the work on expansion could start after that and Lucknow could soon join India's limited list of cities capable of handling non-stop, intercontinental flights. According to the airport administration, the expansion isn't just about longer flights — it's about safer and more efficient aviation. A longer runway provides a greater safety margin for pilots during take-off and landing, especially during adverse weather or in fully loaded aircraft. According to aviation experts, once the extension is complete, ultra-long-haul wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380, Boeing 747-8, Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A350 will be able to operate directly from Lucknow. The runway extension project has already received clearance from the environmental committee and work has begun on clearing 150 metres of space on either side of the runway. The land acquisition will cover Raheemabad, Mohammadpur Bhaktikhera, Gadaura and other nearby villages in the Sarojini Nagar area. Some delays have occurred due to resistance from local landowners, but district officials confirm that the process is now moving forward in coordination with airport authorities. Illegal connections: BWSSB sends notices to 338 homes
BENGALURU: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), which had claimed it is struggling financially and making efforts to shape up, has begun sending notices to 383 homes and apartment complexes over unauthorised water connections, and urged them to get the connections regularised by paying fees along with penalties. Board Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar said untreated water from apartments is a big challenge to the board, so they have imposed penalties ranging from a few lakhs to Rs 1crore, depending on the size of the complex. 'By regularizing these connections and imposing penalties, BWSSB is hoping to generate Rs 200 crore in revenue,' he said, adding that since the past 15 days, BWSSB is disconnecting services, and in the next 15 days, the process of regularization will be taken up. The chairman also stated that the BWSSB team used Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) connection data and probed unauthorized BWSSB connections. So far, it has recorded 43,000 such connections across Bengaluru, and officials are following up cases to ensure owners get their connections regularized. A senior official from the BWSSB waste water management said the crackdown on large apartment complexes is to ensure that untreated water comes into the BWSSB's record so plans can be made to ensure contaminated water is treated before it reaches storm water drains and lakes.
