Crystal Palace relegated from WSL after West Ham thrashing

LONDON, April 27 ((Reuters)) - Crystal Palace were relegated from the Womens' Super League (WSL) following a 7-1 beating at the hands of West Ham United on Sunday.
With two games left to play, Palace dropped back down to the second tier after a single unhappy season in the top flight.

The Eagles are on nine points at the bottom of the 12-team table, seven behind Aston Villa, after the Hammers' German forward Shekiera Martinez struck a first-half hat-trick and added another after the break to seal Palace's fate.
"I was saying that over a year in football you get what you deserve, not always in a game, and we have to acknowledge we have not been good enough," Palace boss Leif Gunnar Smerud said.
"We have to look at the facts, and they are that we have not been good enough, not today and not during the season. It's not that difficult, you don't have to be an expert to see that."
With only one team dropping out of the top flight each season, the relegation of Smerud's side means the rest of the division can breathe a sigh of relief for the remainder of the season.
Elsewhere, Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Tottenham Hotspur, while across Merseyside Everton conceded a goal in second-half stoppage time as they lost 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Messi magic needed for Inter Miami as injuries pile up

MIAMI, June 13 (Reuters) - Inter Miami will have to rely heavily on Lionel Messi's firepower as they prepare for Saturday's Club World Cup opener against Al-Ahly, with coach Javier Mascherano forced to re-shuffle his backline due to a string of injuries. Fullback Jordi Alba, fellow defender Gonzalo Lujan and defensive midfielder Yannick Bright have all been ruled out of the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium. "They are not available for this game, hopefully they will be for the second game," Mascherano told a press conference on Friday. Alba, one of Messi's former Barcelona teammates, is sidelined with a hamstring issue. There were also concerns regarding the fitness of centre back David Martinez. "David had some kind of pain yesterday and we did not want to take any risks," said Mascherano. "The reality is that throughout the season, the team have dealt with injuries, but the players who stepped in rose to the challenge. That gives us peace of mind," he said. Miami have conceded 16 goals in their last six competitive games. Much of Miami's chances rest on Messi's shoulders. "He's in good shape this season. There were moments when we had to give him some time to rest, but he's played the last 15 games, except for the match against Dallas when we rested the entire squad," said Mascherano. "We were also fortunate he was able to rest during Argentina's last two games," he added referring to Messi playing 111 minutes in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia earlier this month. "It's our responsibility to create the right environment for him to shine." Miami will also take on Porto and Palmeiras in the 32-club competition.

Mida Noodt targeting German one-two at T100 Triathlon

The 24-year-old took third in San Francisco, rounding off the medal places behind compatriot Rico Bogen and Jelle Geens. It was the perfect follow-up to a ninth-place finish at the season opener in Singapore, and success has left the German hungry for more alongside long-time friend and rival Bogen. 'Now I have finished on the podium once, I want to repeat it,' he said. 'The adrenaline and vibes you get from crossing the finish line and being in the podium spots is so valuable. I don't look too much at the overall rankings. '[Rico and I] have been racing each other for over 10 years, we started in the junior ranks. It is nice to see his progression and the course will suit him so maybe we can make it a one-two.' Noodt is enjoying his first season as a contracted T100 athlete, having been a wildcard in the inaugural season last year. There he produced a strong trio of performances, with a best showing of 18th in Singapore, but has now stepped up a level to challenge amidst a very strong field. The 24-year-old produced the best result of his career in San Francisco, finishing just under four minutes behind ultimate victor Bogen, and he believes there is still more to come from him in Vancouver. He added: 'I came here directly from San Francisco so I know the course inside out. I am enjoying the city so far and I am feeling really good in training. 'I think the course suits me better than San Francisco. I think I can find one or two per cent extra from San Francisco. 'I take a lot of confidence. When you have a great race, you always recover faster. I have got some decent training in and the confidence is there.' Watch the world's top 20 female and top 20 male triathletes race live in the Vancouver T100 on Saturday 14 June. The broadcast starts at 0915 local time, 1715 in the UK, with the men's race starting at 0930 and then the women at 1200. Odsonne Edouard to Celtic transfer return given thumbs up but one major stumbling block cited

French Eddy has been deemed surplus to requirements at FA Cup-winning Crystal Palace Scott Allan insists Celtic shouldn't think twice if an opportunity arises to re-sign Odsonne Edouard. Brendan Rodgers has already brought returning heroes Kieran Tierney and Jota back to Parkhead after stints elsewhere. ‌ Edouard, 27, flopped on loan at Leicester City and has no future at Crystal Palace as he enters the final year of his deal. ‌ The former PSG striker - who swapped Celtic Park for Selhurst Park in a £14million transfer four years ago - was prolific in Glasgow. Rodgers even labelled the Frenchman as one of the best young players he had worked with after shelling out a then-club record £9m to turn his season-long loan into a permanent deal in 2018. And when asked if he should be on Celtic's radar this summer, Allan told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: "I would, yeah. Fantastic player. It's obviously a position that Celtic will be looking to add to. "I think we might see Daizen Maeda go back out to that wide area, where he was so effective in terms of his pressing and getting up and down the pitch. "He'll be looking to add to his goal tally come next season. I think there's no question that it's an area of the park where Celtic need to strengthen." ‌ A potential stumbling block could be Edouard's lucrative salary at the Eagles, something Allan believes could be a deal breaker. The ex-Hoops midfielder said: "I think the problem with the boys that are playing in the Premier League is that there's now the chance to go to the Saudi League where they can earn ridiculous amounts of money. "The Kieran Tierney one is completely different because he's a huge Celtic fan and he's been dying to get back home and probably feels like he's got unfinished business at Celtic. ‌ "So it'll be interesting but I do feel that Celtic will be looking to find the next Odsonne Edouard where they can get a tune from them and then make money from them."
