Shephard in mix for Newport's trip to Crawley

BBC News6 days ago
Liam Shephard is in contention to start his second Newport County spell at Crawley Town in League Two.The Exiles signed the 30-year-old - who is primarily a right-back but can also play in a central trio and midfield - this week after he was released by Salford City at the end of last season.Shephard stayed fit on a PFA training camp for unattached players and is an option for manager David Hughes in Sussex on Saturday (15:00 BST), provided that international clearance comes through in time."He has looked sharp and we were really pleased with how he presented and reported on his first day," said Hughes."He has looked really fit and sharp after four weeks with the PFA, which speaks volumes about the work they are doing to support players out of contract. He comes to us in good health, good fitness and available."Shephard was a key figure in Newport's promotion challenge in 2020-21 and started in the play-off final defeat to Morecambe at Wembley. He is reunited with coach Wayne Hatswell and will provide an option down the right along with Joe Thomas and Manchester United loanee Habeeb Ogunneye.Cameron Evans, who played at right-back, left-back and centre-back last season, has been used as a combative midfielder in the early stages of the campaign."Liam brings experience, outstanding quality and technical ability. He is still only 30 so there is still a good amount of football in front of him," said Hughes."He adds significantly to the squad so we are really pleased to add him to what we already have."Anybody who has worked with Liam speaks volumes about his personality, professionalism and character, Wayne being one of those."We have been really pleased with the manner that the players have applied themselves since pre-season and he adds to that."The Exiles have some minor niggles but are hoping that the squad that drew 1-1 with Notts County in their League Two opener will be available for Crawley.Defender Ciaran Brennan (shoulder) and winger Michael Spellman (groin) are close to returns.

Roma make approach for Manchester United's Jadon Sancho

Roma have made an offer worth in the region of £20million for Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho, the PA news agency understands. The 25-year-old has failed to live up to expectations since making his hotly anticipated £73m switch from Borussia Dortmund to Old Trafford in 2021. Sancho has made just 83 appearances and scored 12 goals since making the move to United, who are hoping to get him off the books this summer. There have been recent whispers of a move to Serie A and PA understands Roma have made a bid to sign the England international, whose contract runs until next summer with an option for a further year. Sancho last appeared for United in the Community Shield last season, when his penalty was saved in the shoot-out loss to his former club Manchester City. The winger had returned having ended the 2023-24 campaign on loan back at Dortmund after being frozen out for claiming on social media that he had been made a 'scapegoat'. Those comments in September 2023 were in response to then United manager Erik ten Hag saying he had not reached the 'level' required to be involved in their squad at Arsenal. Sancho returned for last year's pre-season at United but went on to join Chelsea on a season-long loan, only for the west London outfit to pay £5m to get out of their deal to make the move permanent for £25m. The Manchester City youth graduate does not have a number at United and is one of a quintet of players that have did not train with Ruben Amorim's side during pre-season as they seek a move elsewhere. Homegrown forward Marcus Rashford was among them and last month sealed a season-long switch to Barcelona with the option to make the move permanent. United want £50m for Chelsea target Alejandro Garnacho, while exits have also yet to be secured for Antony and Tyrell Malacia following loans at Real Betis and PSV respectively.

Match of the Day ready to return for new season but Premier League fans can catch highlights on BBC much earlier

BBC viewers will be able to watch Premier League highlights this season more than two hours before Match of the Day. The iconic Beeb highlights programme is set to return to screens this Saturday. Mark Chapman will host the first show of the post-Gary Lineker era. In addition to Lineker's departure following 26 years in the hotseat, the BBC will be making other changes to its Premier League output. Match of the Day will continue to provide fans with all the match action plus high-profile punditry. But fans will be able to watch just the highlights on BBC iPlayer from 8pm. Despite all the goals and major incidents being available earlier, Beeb chiefs believe that MOTD will still be able to pull in a major viewership. A BBC press release confirmed: "Published live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, match highlights from every fixture will drop at 8pm, putting all the biggest moments at fans' fingertips ahead of the expert analysis and in-depth discussion on the main show. "It's a game-changing way to stay connected and fully immersed in the action." Chapman, 51, is set to be the first of Match of the Day's new three rotating presenters to sit in the hotseat. The experienced broadcaster will rotate with Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan throughout the season. Cates, 49, is set to continue her prominent role with Sky Sports alongside her new MOTD duties. Gary Lineker sensationally quits BBC and will not front its 2026 World Cup coverage after anti-Semitism row Per the Telegraph, Match of the Day has managed to pull in a 3.5 million average audience over recent seasons. That is despite plenty of live TV games, streaming and goals being available on social media. Despite Lineker's exit, his right-hand men Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will continue as pundit regulars on Match of the Day. While, as SunSport revealed last month, Wayne Rooney will join the team on a regular basis. 2
