India Gazette8 hours ago

Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 16 (ANI): Four people died and 51 were injured when an old narrow bridge over the River Indrayani near Talegaon in Maharashtra's Pune district collapsed on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased are Chandrakant Salve, Rohit Mane, and Vihaan Mane, while the fourth remains unidentified.
While speaking to ANI, District Collector Jitendra Dudi said, 'A total of 51 people are injured and admitted to different hospitals, taking treatment, and four individuals have died. Three were identified as Chandrakant Salve, Rohit Mane, and Vihaan Mane, and one was male but unidentified...'
'The incident happened at 3:15 pm and we got the information at 3:30 pm... A team of about 250 people immediately came here. The rescue operation started, and so far we have rescued about 38 people,' he added.
Dudi confirmed that search operations were ongoing. 'We asked people to tell us if their relatives are unknown, and two such people are unknown. The search operation is going on... This operation will continue till we identify and rescue all the people,' he told ANI.
He also acknowledged prior warnings about the danger, saying, 'We had issued advisories and warnings to all the places that are dangerous for tourists, and this was one such place, but unfortunately, the number of tourists increased a lot... Going forward, we will form a team and investigate the incident, and if the administration is found guilty, I will ensure that action is taken against them as well.'
On the medical front, seven patients were admitted to the ICU of Atharva Hospital. 'According to the doctors, six patients are out of danger, but one, who was found late, is in a critical condition but is stable as of now,' Dudi said.
Maharashtra Minister of Relief and Rehabilitation Makarand Patil and District Collector Jitendra Dudi visited the Civil Hospital to meet the people injured and critically ill after the collapse.
Reacting to the tragedy, NCP-SCP MLA Rohit Pawar said, 'The incident is very unfortunate... When the incident happened, young locals saved around 20-25 people; NDRF and police also saved people. The bridge was quite old, and there used to be discussions about its renovation, but unfortunately, it could not be done.'
'There are many such bridges that are old, some date back to 100 years, from the colonial era, in the entire Maharashtra and their situation is also dilapidated,' he told ANI.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey strongly criticised the authorities. 'The incident is very unfortunate... Why did the authority not put up barricades when the bridge was weak? Why was the security of the tourists not tightened...? All the higher authorities responsible for this bridge's maintenance should be arrested and punished,' he said.
Dubey further claimed that funds were allocated but never used. 'A fund of Rs 8 crore was also allocated for the bridge, but stayed on paper... Looking at the poor conditions of Pune, people can't even travel as tourists?... We demand from CM Devendra Fadnavis and Dy CM Ajit Pawar that all those responsible must be punished, auditing of all old bridges should be done, and security should be deployed at all tourist places. This matter is straightaway a case of murder.'
The search and rescue operation stopped the agency from moving out, and a collapsed part of the bridge was removed from the river.
Further investigation into the cause of the collapse is still underway. (ANI)

Kerala Court Mandates Rs 6 Crore Security Deposit Before Releasing Vessel Linked To Sunken Ship

The Kerala High Court has issued a directive preventing port authorities from releasing a vessel associated with the sunken Liberian ship MSC Elsa 3 until a substantial financial guarantee of Rs 6 crore is provided. This judicial order emerged from legal proceedings initiated by six cashew importing companies who assert that their commercial shipments were aboard the ill-fated vessel when it went down off Kerala's coastline in late May. The court's decision establishes that the sister vessel can only be released upon presentation of verified proof that the required deposit has been secured. Legal proceedings in this matter are scheduled to resume at 1:45 PM today, when the shipping company is expected to demonstrate compliance with the deposit requirement, according to Advocate Joy Thattil, who represents the affected importers. The original incident involved MSC Elsa 3, a container vessel operating under Liberian flag registration, which sank in waters near Alappuzha district on May 25. The vessel was reportedly transporting dangerous and flammable materials at the time of the maritime disaster, raising significant environmental and safety concerns for the region. Kerala police authorities have initiated criminal proceedings against the ship's ownership, captain, and crew members, filing charges related to reckless navigation practices. The First Information Report, registered at Fort Kochi Coastal police station on June 11, includes multiple violations under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically addressing negligent navigation, improper handling of hazardous substances, and creating obstructions in public shipping lanes. The legal complaint, filed by Alappuzha district resident C Shamji, alleges that the vessel's operators demonstrated negligence in managing the ship, directly contributing to its sinking and subsequent environmental damage. The charges specifically highlight improper management of dangerous materials and the resulting impact on marine ecosystems and local fishing communities, with financial damages estimated in the hundreds of thousands of rupees. According to Ministry of Defence records, MSC Elsa 3 was carrying a substantial cargo load of 640 containers when it sank. Among these containers, 13 contained hazardous materials while 12 specifically held calcium carbide, a chemical compound known for its reactive properties. Additionally, the vessel was loaded with significant quantities of fuel, including 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of furnace oil, amplifying environmental contamination concerns. The severity of the situation prompted the Kerala government to officially classify the MSC Elsa 3 wreckage as a state-specific disaster on May 29, acknowledging its far-reaching environmental, social, and economic implications. The vessel had capsized and sunk in Arabian Sea waters approximately 14.6 nautical miles from the Kerala shoreline. Since the maritime accident occurred, numerous containers from the sunken vessel have been discovered washing ashore at various coastal locations throughout Alappuzha, Kollam, and Ernakulam districts. This ongoing recovery of debris has created additional logistical and environmental challenges for local authorities. Government officials have expressed particular concern about the environmental ramifications of the incident, citing substantial risks including potential oil spills from the vessel's fuel reserves and the widespread distribution of hazardous cargo debris throughout the marine environment. These concerns have influenced the government's decision to treat the incident as a significant disaster requiring coordinated state-level response efforts.

Partners No More: Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar Split Over Brother Anmol

New Delhi: Gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar - in whose alliance a rift had been brewing for some time - have now 'split up', sources have told NDTV, acknowledging that this will make it more difficult for police and intelligence agencies to bust their respective criminal networks. Sources said the information came from interrogation of Bishnoi and Brar's associates. Bishnoi is currently in Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Jail, while Goldie Brar remains a wanted man; he went to the United States in 2017 and never returned, and now runs his gang from that country. According to sources, Brar has now joined hands with Azerbaijan-based Rohit Godara, while Bishnoi has tied up with Noni Rana, also known as Surya Pratap, who operates from Canada. Senior officers from the Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi police forces have met with counterparts from the National Investigation Agency to understand the impact of the 'break up'. Sources said the Bishnoi-Brar rift began with the arrest of the former's brother, Anmol Bishnoi , in California in November last year. Anmol was arrested for entering the US illegally. READ | US Arrests Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's Brother Anmol, But Not For Murder Anmol Bishnoi - wanted in connection with several high-profile cases, including last year's killing of ex-Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Baba Siddique - faces an extradition request. Bishnoi, meanwhile, has reportedly filed a plea for political asylum in the US. In March US authorities filed a request for more information - from the charges against Anmol Bishnoi to details about the evidence against him and his financial details. Sources in the intelligence community told NDTV the Bishnoi-Brar rift was because the former felt the latter, and Rohit Godara, did not help his brother in the bail bond process. Anmol Bishnoi did eventually secure bail, but was also forced to wear a GPS tracker. A furious Lawrence Bishnoi broke ties with Goldy Brar and joined hands with Noni Rana, the younger brother of notorious Haryana-based gangster Kala Rana, alias Virendra Pratap. Lawrence Bishnoi and Noni Rana have reportedly worked together over the past few months, with the latter's network making ransom and extortion calls and collecting money for the former. READ | Goldy Brar Was Asked Why He Killed Sidhu Moose Wala. His Response On the murder of Moose Wala, in January Brar told British broadcaster BBC, "In his arrogance, he [Moose Wala] made some mistakes that could not be forgiven... We had no option but to kill him. He had to face the consequences of his actions. It was either him or us. As simple as that." Apart from the killing of Moose Wala and Siddique, the Bishnoi and Brar gangs have also been linked to multiple threats against Bollywood star Salman Khan, including the April 2024 incident in which gunmen opened fire at his apartment in Mumbai's Bandra area while he was inside. The actor was unhurt and the gunmen were later arrested.
