SIS Group signs MoU with govt to upskill civil defence officers to improve security preparedness

Security and business support services provider SIS Group Enterprises on Wednesday said it has signed an MoU with the government to upskill its personnel and include Civil Defence and Disaster Relief in the training curriculum.
The strategic partnership with the civil defence wing of the Home Affairs Ministry intends to improve internal security preparedness by supporting the upskilling of SIS frontline security officers deployed in 244 districts across India, the group said in a statement.
This collaboration will involve the active participation of SIS teams in Civil Defence drills and the inclusion of Civil Defence and Disaster Relief modules in SIS's training curriculum.
The objective is to enhance response mechanisms and ensure business continuity for SIS clients in the event of emergencies, disasters, or war-like situations.
Rituraj Sinha, Group Managing Director, SIS Group Enterprises, said: 'By integrating Civil Defence training into our regular modules, we are equipping our frontline personnel to act swiftly and effectively during crises, ensuring the safety of our clients and contributing to India's internal security.'

India-US trade negotiations hit top gear, American delegation extends Delhi stay
New Delhi: Intensive trade negotiations between India and the US gained momentum, with an American delegation extending its stay in New Delhi until next week as both sides work to finalise an early portion of their bilateral trade agreement, people aware of the matter said on Friday. The American negotiation team led by assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch arrived in India on Wednesday and began face-to-face bilateral talks that stretched late into Thursday, according to one person familiar with the discussions. 'The discussions are positive and progressive, and moving in the right direction,' said one person, describing Friday's conversations as 'continuing in a similar manner.' Originally expected to wrap up their visit after Friday, the American team will now remain in Delhi until Tuesday (June 10), this person added, signalling the hectic nature of the negotiations as both countries race to beat a crucial July 9 deadline. The focus is on achieving common ground for greater market access by eliminating tariffs and non-tariff barriers before July 9, when an additional 16% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods is set to take effect unless an interim deal is reached, people aware of the matter have previously explained. 'During the visit of the US delegation, both sides are engaged in detailed discussions on various aspects of the proposed BTA in order to forge a pathway to realise the vision for bilateral trade and economic ties as laid down by the leaders of the two countries during their meeting in February 2025,' a second person said. 'An early harvest deal—mostly related to tariff reductions on goods and elimination of non-tariff barriers—could be finalised during the ongoing New Delhi round, provided both sides reach agreement on all matters involving the early deal,' said the person quoted in the first instance. Speaking from Brescia, Italy, on Thursday, Goyal told PTI that negotiations were progressing well and more US officials would reach New Delhi on Friday to join discussions with their Indian counterparts. The negotiations are complex and taking time because of the other American tariffs on specific Indian goods such as steel, aluminium, automobiles and auto components, the first person quoted above added. 'As per the leaders' statement, the deal between the two sovereigns must be mutually beneficial, hence all trade-related issues have to be addressed accordingly,' he said. The tariff disputes have created parallel tracks in India-US relations, with New Delhi maintaining World Trade Organisation complaints against American measures while simultaneously pursuing bilateral solutions through the BTA framework.

US, Chinese officials to meet in London next week for new round of trade talks

How Horses, Mules Helped In Navigating Steep Slopes To Build Chenab Bridge
Katra: To make the vision of "Kashmir to Kanyakumari" come alive, the project team behind the construction of the Chenab bridge faced several challenges. Among them was how to reach the location surrounded by the steep slopes of the Himalayas. The team had only one option -- horses and mules. According to Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the top infrastructure company that constructed the bridge, one of the main and earliest challenges was access to the bridge location, to transport equipment and construction materials. "Initially, mules and horses were used by the project team to reach the location. Slowly over a period, temporary roads were created and access was made available to the site," a spokesperson from the company said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the iconic Chenab Bridge, Anji Rail Bridge and Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project and flagged off Vande Bharat trains, connecting Kashmir to Kanyakumari. The spokesperson added that eventually on the North side of the river bank, an 11-km road was constructed and a 12-km long road on the South side. Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Vice Chairman, Afcons, said the Chenab Railway Bridge is more than just a marvel of engineering. "It is a symbol of India's resolve to conquer the most formidable challenges with ingenuity and courage," Subramanian told PTI. The company used the world's tallest crossbar cable cranes and specialised heavy machinery as tools for this ambitious project. "The ancient and steep slopes of the Himalayas were tamed using massive consolidation grouting, making them sturdy for the colossal arch foundations," the company said, highlighting challenges it faced. "With the foundations set, the erection of the arch from both sides was planned by cantilever construction technique. The first big moment of triumph came on April 5, 2021, when a single majestic arch approaching steadily from both banks met at the crown," it added. "The viaduct construction was another unique challenge. There were multiple transition areas. Keeping this in mind, the launching sequence was meticulously planned in four sections," the spokesperson. Giridhar Rajagopalan, Deputy Managing Director, Afcons told PTI that for the first time in Indian Railways, incremental launching was done on transition curve and a longitudinal gradient, both occurring at same location, for the deck launching of the viaduct portion of the Chenab Bridge. S Paramasivan, Managing Director, Afcons, "For Afcons, it represents our unwavering commitment to nation-building and our ability to reimagine infrastructure in the toughest terrains. This bridge will inspire generations of engineers and stands as a tribute to the power of Indian engineering and teamwork." For the first time in the Indian Railways' history, a laboratory accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration (NABL) was set up to ensure that quality was being monitored at every stage of the project. Situated at a height of 359 metres above the river, the Chenab bridge is 35 metres higher than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris and the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab river. After inaugurating the Chenab bridge, the prime minister walked on it holding the Tricolour high. He travelled in a rail engine coach to reach the spot.
