Eddie Howe makes concerning Newcastle transfer admission in latest Alexander Isak twist
Eddie Howe says Newcastle remain keen on bringing in new faces over the next fortnight but admits: "It's more hope than expectation."
Regardless of Alexander Isak's future, the Toon are keen to bring in a new striker because they are yet to replace Callum Wilson, who left at the end of his contract in June.
And late in a window where the majority of their rivals have already welcomed in new No9s, Howe said: "It seems like the striker market gets tighter every year. Maybe that's because we have continued to grow as a team.
"There's not many players of that calibre to make us better and when they're potentially available the price seems to go up, and then you are dealt other challenges like PSR, how much you spend in the window, the long-term effects if you do the transfer.
"It is not as clear as going out and getting any player. They have got to fit the team, make us better and be affordable. That's not a large group of players."
Newcastle had been keen to pursue Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike and Joao Pedro earlier in the summer – only for all four to join other clubs.
Howe continued: "We're actively looking in the market. We're working hard to bring players in, more out of hope than expectation."
Asked whether there was any development to Isak's situation on Saturday afternoon, Howe added: "Nothing's changed. The door is well and truly open but he has to decide what he wants to do.
"We would like a resolution. The ownership, everyone, the players we have, want that clarity. You don't need any distraction. I'm not in control of that. There's only one person in control of that."
Asked if he means Isak, Howe added: "Alex is in control of what he does. I'm not in control of him." And in terms of Isak being fined for not being part of the matchday squad, Howe was unable to add clarity when adding: "Other people deal with that issue. I'm concentrating on the team."

Alexander Isak 'expected to MISS PFA awards' despite being nominated for top prize - as his self-imposed Newcastle exile to force Liverpool move continues
Wantaway Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is expected to miss the glitzy Professional Footballers' Association awards gala on Tuesday night, according to a report. The striker has been nominated for the biggest prize of the night, Players' Player of the Year, but he will reportedly miss the occasion as his self-imposed exile, in order to force through a move to Liverpool, continues. Isak was the subject of a £110million bid from Arne Slot 's side last month, which was promptly rejected by the Newcastle hierarchy, who are believed to value Isak at closer to £150m. The saga began at the beginning of the summer when the talented frontman initially reported an injury to keep him out of the Magpies' pre-season tour and the stand-off has continued since. Isak, who has been heavily criticised in the media and by Magpies fans, then missed Newcastle's 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday, a move that saw him fined by the club. During that clash, he was targeted by supporter chants where he was labelled as a 'greedy b*****d'. Despite the constant speculation surrounding his future, Isak hasn't publicly commented. The Swedish striker is nominated for the night's biggest prize but is yet to confirm his attendance According to a BBC report, the 25-year-old is yet to confirm his attendance with just over 24 hours until the event. The report goes on to claim that sources have indicated that the forward is not planning to be there. On Saturday, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was unsurprisingly probed on the issue of Isak's future at every opportunity and he provided an update after the Villa clash. 'We would like a resolution,' he said. 'I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. We need that clarity. You don't need any distraction. 'But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.' He added: 'This season, any season, every season, is going to be hard enough. You don't need any kind of distraction to swerve your thoughts, to unbalance what we're doing. 'I hope it's resolved quickly, because it's news around us all the time. The players have managed to shut that out and perform. We have to continue to do that.' Of the fan chant aimed at Isak, Howe said: 'Whatever happens, I think the support has acted really well today because they supported the team, which is always my big ask, to support the team when we're playing. 'And they've done that unbelievably well in some difficult moments during the four years. And then if afterwards they want to say something, I think they're very free to do that.' Howe then reiterated his wish for Isak to return to the squad, and said: 'Nothing has changed, but the door is well and truly open. But yeah, he has to decide what he wants to do.' On Monday, Isak received the backing of his international manager, Jon Dahl Tomasson, who described him as 'an extremely professional player'. 'Situations like this are quite complex,' Tomasson told Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen. 'These are extremely complex environments that the players operate in. 'I'm sure it will work out in the end, but you have to know the whole picture before you draw conclusions. That's always a good tip.'

Now he has doubled down and deleted all of his Brentford-related posts on social media. And he has changed his Instagram profile picture to a black circle. Wissa, 28, has just 12 months remaining on his deal but Brentford have rejected a £30million offer from Newcastle. Brentford were interested in Arnaud Kalimuendo but the 23-year-old has joined Nottingham Forest instead. Newcastle are expected to return with a £35m offer for Wissa, who is keen to join to play Champions League football. Eddie Howe wants him just as badly - especially after his Toon side kicked off the campaign without a recognised forward after on-strike Alexander Isak refused to play. Newcastle have missed out on Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko in their so far unsuccessful hunt for a new frontman this summer. Wayne Rooney makes Premier League 2025/26 season predictions but his Man Utd tip leaves pundits shocked Isak remains intent on holding out for a mega-money move to Premier League champs Liverpool. It has led to Magpies legend Alan Shearer slamming Isak's actions. Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Shearer said: "There is a way to do it and Alex is not going about it the right way at all. You have to feel sorry for the players and the manager. "The players today are busting a gut for the football club, for the thousands of fans that have travelled all that way to Villa Park. They're giving their all. "Yet they're looking at another player, wherever he is, refusing to play despite having a three-year contract and on over £100,000-a-week. [The fans] are paying £60 or £70 for a ticket, £30 for petrol or a train ticket. "You can imagine the anger that they're feeling that someone is taking the liberty of saying, 'I'm refusing to play'. You just can't do that when you've got a three-year contract. "I also understand there's two sides to every story and we've never heard anything from him or his side yet, it's all leaks or reports. There is still a chance, albeit a small chance, that he could be integrated back into the team if he says sorry. "It's unlikely that that's the case, but if it gets past the transfer deadline day and there's still an impasse and no one's budging and he's still at Newcastle, I can't see a way back then." 3 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Alexander Isak transfer update issued amid Liverpool saga: 'You have to know the whole picture'
Alexander Isak's proposed move to Liverpool failed to get off the ground and the Swede is in a transfer stand-off with current club Newcastle United as the window draws to an end Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has warned people not too judge Alexander Isak too quickly and labelled the forward 'extremely professional'. The Newcastle star missed the club's opening match of the season against Aston Villa as he pushes for a move to Liverpool. Isak has trained away from Newcastle's first team after missing the side's pre-season tour of Asia and appears to have indicated he will not feature for the club again. Eddie Howe has left the door open to that possibility despite his charge's stance. Liverpool had a £110million bid quickly turned down earlier in the summer, and are ready to return for the player if offered encouragement from their Premier League rivals. Newcastle had earlier declared Isak not for sale and reports have suggested they would like to see two strikers arrive before even countenancing a deal. Isak has come in for some criticism for his approach in attempting to force a move, and now his international manager Tomasson has spoken out in defence of his charge. The Sweden boss has already seen Viktor Gyokeres go on strike to facilitate a transfer this summer and has lent his support to Isak, who may now be fined. Tomasson believes critics should not speak out before knowing the full situation surrounding Isak's decision. He told fotbollskanalen: "First of all: Alex is an extremely professional player. A fantastic character and personality. I have talked a lot with Alex during this period. "Situations like this are quite complex. These are extremely complex environments that the players operate in. I'm sure it will work out in the end, but you have to know the whole picture before you draw conclusions. That's always a good tip. "I don't think we know it (the whole picture). I don't know the whole picture either. It's quite normal because there's a lot of politics in a football club. But one thing is for sure: Alex is a great guy and very professional. We should all be very careful about drawing conclusions because we don't know the bigger picture." Tomasson will hope to have Isak available for Sweden's next World Cup qualifying matches against Slovnia and Kosovo as the nation attempts to make the tournament in the United States. Isak's preparation thus far has not been ideal however. He added: "There is time. He is a professional and I know he has trained. Of course he has not trained with a team and has not played matches. Let's wait and see. We will have a good talk, Alex and I, and hopefully he will be back in team training soon. Of course we have thought about it. "I want to have my best players available and he is a fantastic player. But I can't see into the future. It's impossible."
