Quad-Motor Rivians Arrive With Wild Power and Wilder Price
Better late than never, as they say, as Rivian has now introduced the R1S and R1T Quad-Motor models for the 2026 model year, and they're amped up for a monstrous power output this time around, worthy of the top-spec designation. However, the California-based startup has also given them eye-watering price tags.
With four independently controlled motors, the new Quad-Motor setup delivers a staggering 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 lb-ft of torque. That power shoves the R1S from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds, while the longer-wheelbase R1T does it in 2.5 secs. These numbers are on par with those of supercars, and even quicker than many.
But that level of performance comes at a steep cost: $115,990 for the R1T Quad, or $119,990 for the Launch Edition. The R1S starts at $121,990 and climbs to $125,990 for the Launch Edition.
Beyond straight-line speed, both vehicles come standard with Rivian's 140-kWh Max battery pack, allowing up to 374 miles of range, depending on tires. There's also a Conserve Mode that disables the rear motors to maximize range up to 400 miles. Go for the 34-inch all-terrain tires, though, and range drops to 325 miles.
Other performance features include torque vectoring via each motor, a new Launch Mode with an integrated Launch Cam, and several software-based drive modes.
Among them are a Desert Rally Mode, born from the R1T's Rebelle Rally victory, and a Hill Climb Mode, developed during its Pikes Peak run. Rivian's much-awaited Tank Turn finally becomes available in the Quad models as the Kick Turn, coming via a September 2025 software update.
Inside, both models have the Ascend interior with quilted upholstery, bronze accents, and three trim themes. The Launch Edition also adds unique paint, badges, and lifetime access to Rivian's Autonomy Platform+ and Connect+ services. Exterior customization options include wheel and tire packages ranging from 22-inch ultra-high-performance tires to 20-inch all-terrain rubbers.
Deliveries of the Quad-Motor R1T and R1S begin this month, and all models will come standard with a built-in NACS port for Tesla Supercharger compatibility, plus a complimentary CCS adapter. They're definitely pricey, but are they worth the money? You'll be the judge, but remember that supercar performance in SUV and truck form is a feat that a few vehicles possess.

The settlement comes at a pivotal time for Rivian. Rivian has redesigned its R1S SUV and R1T truck in a bid to lower manufacturing costs, while improving performance of its flagship vehicles. However, the company is banking on the next addition to its lineup — the highly anticipated R2 SUV that has a $45,000 base price — to grow sales. That vehicle won't go on sale until the first half of 2026. The ownership structure of Rivian has shifted since its IPO in 2021. At that time, Amazon and Ford were among the largest stakeholders. Today, Ford is essentially out and Volkswagen Group has emerged as a major player. In late 2024, Rivian entered into a joint venture valued at $5.8 billion with Volkswagen focused on software and electrical architecture. Rivian has provided technology and employees to the joint venture, while Volkswagen has largely contributed money in the form of share purchases and convertible debt. As a result, the German automotive giant now owns 12.3% of Rivian, according to a recent filing. That puts it slightly behind Amazon, which owned 14.2% of Rivian as of the April 2025 proxy filing. That's enough to give Amazon the most voting power of any single shareholder: 13.3%. (Ford and T. Rowe Price also used to be major shareholders after the IPO, but have since sold down their stakes.) Scaringe's ownership stake in Rivian was 2% prior to the divorce settlement, according to the proxy filing. But he had a 7.6% share of the voting power, thanks in part to the Class B stock, which comes with 10 votes per share. (Rivian's Class A stock only comes with 1 vote per share.) The most he wielded was 9.2% in 2022. That figure remained unchanged in 2023, fell to 8.7% in 2024, and again to 7.6% in 2025 following the Volkswagen investment. The Class B stock included in the settlement was automatically converted into Class A stock, meaning Scaringe's ex-wife will not likely have much voting power relative to other shareholders if she maintains the holding. A lawyer representing her did not respond to a request for comment sent over the weekend. Rivian's New Tri-Motor Models Are Quicker Than Old Quads: Tested
The 2025 Rivian R1S Tri-Motor Max and R1T Tri-Motor Max are quicker than their Quad-Motor predecessors. At our test track, the R1S and R1T Tri-Motor were three-tenths quicker to 60 mph than their old Quad-Motor counterparts. The advantage comes from Rivian's new in-house electric motors, which give the Tri-Motor models an extra 15 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque versus the outgoing Quads. We've been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to bolster our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here). When it comes to EVs, more electric motors typically translate to more power and quicker acceleration. Makes sense, right? That's not the case with Rivian's new triple-motor R1S and R1T models, at least when comparing them with their quadruple-motor predecessors. Three Greater Than Four? What's not immediately obvious is that the Rivian R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck have entered their second generation for the 2025 model year. All models have improved batteries, and all electric motors are now built in-house by Rivian, with the Tri- and Quad-Motor configurations no longer supplied by Bosch. The newer motors bring various improvements—namely, they're more power-dense. That's partly why the new R1S and R1T with the available Tri-Motor Max configuration (Max referring to the battery size) are quicker in a straight line than their pre-2025 Quad-Motor counterparts. Now, let's look at the numbers. View Exterior Photos Andi Hendrick | Car and Driver At our test track, the 2025 R1S and R1T Tri-Motor models both managed zero-to-60-mph times that were three-tenths quicker than the first-gen R1S and R1T Quad-Motors. The new R1S Tri posted a 60-mph sprint of 2.8 seconds compared with the old R1S Quad's 3.1-second run. The new R1T Tri ripped to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, whereas the previous R1T Launch Edition Quad-Motor took three seconds flat. Take a peek at the tech specs for the 2025 R1S and R1T, and you'll see the Rivian-built Tri-Motor setup is good for 850 horsepower and 1103 pound-feet of torque. While that's only 15 more ponies than the previous 835-hp Quad-Motor models, there's a lot more stump-pulling torque, 195 pound-feet to be exact (up from 908). The new Tri-Motor siblings also weighed less than the first-gen Quads, with the R1T losing 168 pounds and the R1S dropping 57 pounds based on our scales. Some of that weight loss can be attributed to the Max battery pack's reengineered die-cast carrier, which Rivian said helps reduce mass. There's also a new Launch Control mode that puts the 2025 Tri models into a prepared squat before shooting them down the line. The New Quads Will Be Even Quicker Of course, the new Quad-Motor R1S and R1T will be even mightier and quicker, summoning a combined 1025 horses and 1198 pound-feet. While we've driven these almighty new EVs, we haven't yet strapped our testing equipment to either the R1S or R1T Quad-Motors. They're set to go on sale this month. By Rivian's own account, the updated Quads should hit 60 mph in 2.5 and 2.6 seconds, respectively. So, stay tuned for another testing-hub story to see if we can meet or beat those claims.
