CAIRO – 20 March 2025: On 19 March, 2025, Egypt celebrated the anniversary of raising the Egyptian flag over Taba, a territory regained through a diplomatic struggle that lasted fourteen months, the foreign ministry says.
This effort culminated in the historic ruling in Geneva by an international arbitration panel on September 29, 1988, which affirmed Egypt's sovereignty over Taba.
Roughly six months after the ruling and following Egyptian diplomatic efforts to compel Israel to comply, the last Israeli soldier withdrew from Taba on March 15, 1989.
This was followed by the raising of the Egyptian flag on that cherished land on March 19, 1989, marking Egypt's victory in the battle to reclaim its territory, a triumph supported by all state institutions and agencies.
The foreign ministry stated that 'this strenuous diplomatic battle showcased the resilience and expertise of the Egyptian negotiator, drawing from the principles of Egyptian diplomacy, which is unwavering in safeguarding the nation's security and dedicated to defending its supreme interests, both in peace and war.'
Addressing the Egyptian people and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on this occasion, the foreign ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continue defending and expressing the greatness and dignity of this nation and the authenticity and nobility of its generous people.

Egypt ready to support counter-terrorism efforts in Sahel region: FM Abdelatty to Nigerian counterpart - Foreign Affairs
Egypt is ready to support counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel region, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, during a phone call on Saturday. The two ministers discussed developments across Africa and the need to deepen cooperation within the African Union (AU) to promote peace and security, particularly in the increasingly volatile Sahel. According to a statement from Egypt's foreign ministry, Abdelatty affirmed Cairo's commitment to assisting Nigeria through capacity-building programmes, including joint efforts with Al-Azhar to combat extremist ideologies. The ministers also explored ways to enhance bilateral ties. Abdelatty highlighted both countries' shared interest in expanding economic, trade, and investment cooperation, focusing on agriculture. He also noted the growing presence of Egyptian companies across Africa and expressed Cairo's interest in developing new joint investment opportunities that would benefit both nations. The two officials also exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, especially the war on Gaza. Abdelatty briefed Tuggar on Egypt's ongoing efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and facilitate the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid. Additionally, Abdelatty condemned Israel's continued violations of international and humanitarian law, accusing Tel Aviv of pursuing a 'policy of arrogance' against Palestinian civilians in defiance of international calls for an end to the war and urgent access to aid.
