How many goals did Pele score in his career? A legendary number that still stirs debate

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, remains football's greatest icon. The great Brazilian and three-time
FIFA World Cup
champion has fascinated fans and historians alike over the past decades, not just due to his medals but also due to his remarkable goal-scoring feats that continue to raise eyebrows all these years after retirement.
Pele
's goal count is a standard of reference in
football history
Pele's goal record, including for Brazil and club teams Santos and New York Cosmos, has contributed to debate about his position among football's all-time greats. Though official figures in his time were not always recorded, estimates and official reports give a better idea of his effect on the field.
Pele's First FIFA World Cup Goal
Pele scored 77 goals in 92 games for the Brazil national team, a record that was the highest in the history of the nation for decades.
They consist of 12 out of 14 FIFA World Cup appearances, placing him among the all-time leading scorers in the tournament.
At a record-breaking 17 years and 239 days, he became the youngest player ever to have scored for the FIFA World Cup, achieving that feat against Wales in 1958. Shortly after, his hat-trick in the semi-final against France and a double in the final against Sweden cemented his place in history.

Domination at club level with Santos and New York Cosmos
On the club level alone, Pele scored 680 official goals, 643 of which he scored for Santos FC, a record only just broken by Lionel Messi at FC Barcelona.

He scored another 37 goals while playing with the New York Cosmos, where he played until he retired in 1977.
These figures alone make him one of the greatest goal scorers in history. But Pele's overall contribution goes far beyond official competition.
The actual number: How many goals did Pele really score?
Including friendlies, exhibitions, matches at the youth level, and unofficial games, Pele's goal total explodes. FIFA and the Guinness World Records both recognize differing numbers.
FIFA traditionally quotes 1,281 goals, while Guinness documents 1,279 goals in 1,363 matches.
The Rec. Sport. Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF), which takes pride in its archival precision, records 778 official senior football goals, a few more than FIFA currently accepts.
In a curious twist, Pelé personally reported that he had scored 1,283 goals, counting all games—including two after-retirement exhibition matches with Santos. Though current superstars
Cristiano Ronaldo
and Lionel Messi have reached the 800 milestone in competitive games, none have come close to Pele's overall tally, considering both competitive and exhibition matches.

A legacy that goes beyond numbers
Whatever the figure is, 757, 778, or 1,281, nobody can dispute that Pele's goal tally is a gargantuan tome in the annals of football history. The Brazilian icon not only scored goals — he revolutionized the sport, motivated generations, and created benchmarks that even today's stars are measured by.

18 is the charm for Virat Kohli: Royal Challengers Bengaluru icon finally wins the Indian Premier League

Virat Kohli has an IPL trophy. It has taken 18 years for the legend himself and fans to rejoice success in the biggest T20 league in the world. It has taken eighteen years of sheer persistence, determination, loyalty and hard work to achieve the final frontier of the 36-year-old's decorated career. Kohli, who is the only player to represent the same team - Royal Challengers Bengaluru - from IPL's inception, has ruled the tournament with the bat. He has more than 9,000 runs for RCB in over 250 matches for the team across IPL and Champions League T20, the most for any batter. The 36-year-old also has the most eight centuries. He led the franchise from 2011 to 2022 with a final in 2016, where the team fell short by just eight runs. But it was on Tuesday at Ahmedabad that Kohli got the taste of the coveted title after RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs. Kohli himself contributed 43 runs in the final. A young, 19-year-old, Virat Kohli had joined RCB from the draft system in the inaugural season in 2008, fresh off an U19 World Cup win as a captain. Kohli did not have the best of starts to his IPL career with just 135 runs in 13 matches. His second season was not the best either, with 246 runs in 16 matches. He showed some promise in 2010, when he got his first 300-run came as a surprise when Kohli was the only player retained by RCB in 2011, ahead of legends of the game like Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor. The 22-year-old Kohli repaid the faith put in him with 557 runs, including four half centuries that season. The team reached the final but fell short in the final step. He also led the team for the first time in the absence of regular captain Daniel Vettori. The batter was made the full-time captain RCB in 2013. However, his breakout season came in 2016, in which he smashed 973 runs to lead the team to the final. The tally remains the highest for a batter in a single season till date. He smashed four centuries in that season, equalled only by Jos Buttler. The 2017-19 seasons were a slump for RCB, finishing last twice and not making it to the playoffs even once. Kohli, however, was still among runs with more than 400 runs in each of the this time, Kohli had already etched his name in history books, becoming one of the best batters across the world, winning matches single handedly for India and RCB. He gave up the leadership duties in 2022 and ever since has registered three consecutive seasons of more than 600 runs, adding to his legacy with the bat. Having won everything with India - the 50 over World Cup, Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup - it is only fitting that Kohli has lifted the coveted IPL title after 18 long years, the number he has carried on his shirt all through his legendray career.

From The Hindu, June 4, 1925: Origin of cricket

The stoolball: Stoolball gave us cricket, the earliest wicket for which was probably adapted from the upturned stool used for the parent game, but, as cricket developed, Stoolball declined, and became almost extinct, except, according to Strutt's Sports and Pastimes, in the north of England, says Major N.W. Fraser writing in an English contemporary: In 1917, however, Mr. Grantham revived it as a game for disabled officers and men, for whom cricket or football was too strenuous. It admirably fulfilled that purpose, and in doing so took on a wider popularity.

Ecstatic Kohli revels in first IPL title, albeit below Test highs

Virat Kohli said on Tuesday he had given his "youth and prime" to land one of the best moments of his career as Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured him a first-ever Indian Premier League T20 title at the 18th time of asking. The 36-year-old Kohli, however, confessed that the six-run win over Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad, sweet as it was, ranked "five levels below Test cricket". The former India captain, who announced his retirement from Test cricket last month, top-scored with 43 as Bengaluru posted 190-9 in the final. It was not his most fluent innings, but it was vital for RCB as their bowlers then restricted Punjab to 184-7 with a crowd of more than 91,000 erupting in joy for their superstar. A teary-eyed Kohli, who has played in all 18 of RCB's campaigns including the three previous finals that they lost, dropped to the ground before being hugged by his teammates. "I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled," said Kohli before launching into an impassioned defence of the oldest and longest format of the game. "This moment is right up there with the best moments in my career. But it still ranks five levels below Test cricket. That's how much I value Test cricket. And that's how much I love Test cricket. "So I would just urge the youngsters coming through... if you want to earn respect in world cricket all over, take up Test cricket, give your heart and soul to it." Punjab head coach Ricky Ponting said: "I totally understand what he (Kohli) means". Two-time World Cup winner Kohli has now walked away from two international formats after he gave up T20s following India's World Cup triumph last year. One of the all-time greats across all formats of the game, Kohli has always been the perfect poster boy of the five-day game with his prolific run-scoring and on-field passion in whites. 'King Kohli' ended his Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85. In the IPL, Kohli joined Bengaluru at the start of lucrative league in 2008 and stuck with them after the disappointment of losing side the finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016. Kohli remained a key player for his team this season with 657 runs including eight half-centuries in 15 innings, often playing the anchor after opening the batting. "Tonight I'll sleep like a baby," said Kohli, who hinted that a full retirement may not be far off. "I have an opportunity to play this game for not many years, there's an end-date to our career. "And by the time I hang up my boots, I want to sit at home and say I gave it everything I had."
