Ecstatic Kohli revels in first IPL title, albeit below Test highs
Virat Kohli said on Tuesday he had given his "youth and prime" to land one of the best moments of his career as Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured him a first-ever Indian Premier League T20 title at the 18th time of asking.
The 36-year-old Kohli, however, confessed that the six-run win over Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad, sweet as it was, ranked "five levels below Test cricket".
The former India captain, who announced his retirement from Test cricket last month, top-scored with 43 as Bengaluru posted 190-9 in the final.
It was not his most fluent innings, but it was vital for RCB as their bowlers then restricted Punjab to 184-7 with a crowd of more than 91,000 erupting in joy for their superstar.
A teary-eyed Kohli, who has played in all 18 of RCB's campaigns including the three previous finals that they lost, dropped to the ground before being hugged by his teammates.
"I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled," said Kohli before launching into an impassioned defence of the oldest and longest format of the game.
"This moment is right up there with the best moments in my career. But it still ranks five levels below Test cricket. That's how much I value Test cricket. And that's how much I love Test cricket.
"So I would just urge the youngsters coming through... if you want to earn respect in world cricket all over, take up Test cricket, give your heart and soul to it."
Punjab head coach Ricky Ponting said: "I totally understand what he (Kohli) means".
Two-time World Cup winner Kohli has now walked away from two international formats after he gave up T20s following India's World Cup triumph last year.
One of the all-time greats across all formats of the game, Kohli has always been the perfect poster boy of the five-day game with his prolific run-scoring and on-field passion in whites.
'King Kohli' ended his Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85.
In the IPL, Kohli joined Bengaluru at the start of lucrative league in 2008 and stuck with them after the disappointment of losing side the finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016.
Kohli remained a key player for his team this season with 657 runs including eight half-centuries in 15 innings, often playing the anchor after opening the batting.
"Tonight I'll sleep like a baby," said Kohli, who hinted that a full retirement may not be far off.
"I have an opportunity to play this game for not many years, there's an end-date to our career.
"And by the time I hang up my boots, I want to sit at home and say I gave it everything I had."

Bengaluru stampede: ‘Everything that could go wrong, went wrong'
Everything that could go wrong seems to have gone wrong at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here, where lakhs converged to catch a glimpse of the RCB team on Wednesday afternoon. Even as the city police claimed that Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) conducted the event at the stadium despite being denied police permission, it has come to light that the security deployment at the venue was inadequate and senior officials in charge were not present on site when the stampede occurred, sources said. Two permissions In a suo motu FIR registered at Cubbon Park Police Station on Thursday, the police claimed that on the evening of June 3, the KSCA authorities approached them seeking permission to hold a celebratory event if RCB won the IPL title, but their request was denied. Similarly, the State government, on the evening of June 3rd, sought police permission to hold a felicitation for the team on the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha if RCB won the championship, and it was granted. Police, however, said that despite the denial of permission, RCB management took to social media on Wednesday morning announcing a victory parade, exhorting fans to congregate. Police deployment Meanwhile, in a submission made by the State government to the High Court during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition, the government said that as against a usual deployment of 789 personnel at the stadium during IPL cricket matches, they had deployed 1,318 personnel, including four companies of the Karnataka State Reserve Police Force (KSRP). While the deployment was over 67% higher than usual, it proved to be woefully inadequate compared to the strength of the crowd that gathered. Usually, a match has a crowd size of around 35,000. However, the crowd at the stadium on Wednesday is estimated to be around 2.5 lakh. Around 3.30 p.m., the stadium gates were opened and people were let in, but the gates were shut once the stadium was full. People in lakhs demanded to be let inside a stadium with a seating capacity of only 32,000, causing a commotion that further led to a stampede. When crowds merged 'There was ample scope to mobilise more forces from within Bengaluru and also the surrounding districts to be deployed at the stadium, but it was not done. The size of the crowd that gathered at the stadium was clearly underestimated. Moreover, the crowd that gathered in front of the Vidhana Soudha moved and joined those around the stadium. Ideally, there should have been barricading and the two crowds should not have been allowed to merge,' said a senior police official who was not part of the arrangements on Wednesday. Many senior police officers have also been puzzled as to why there was no bid to disperse the mob around the stadium that was thrusting at the closed stadium gates. Officials absent on scene Multiple sources within the city police stated that the senior official responsible for security at the stadium was not present at the scene when the stampede occurred, but was instead at the Vidhana Soudha. 'With no senior jurisdictional officers at the spot, a decision to lathicharge and disperse the mob was not taken in time,' a senior official said. The magisterial inquiry into the lapses in security will now ascertain the specific duties assigned to officers, their locations throughout the day, and the discharge of their duties, according to sources.

England Hope To Have Jofra Archer Back Against India After Lengthy Lay-Off
England fast bowler Jofra Archer could make his long-awaited Test return as soon as next month's second match against India, selector Luke Wright said on Thursday. A 14-man squad will travel to Headingley for the first of a five-match series, with Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton and Jacob Bethell all included after missing England's rout of Zimbabwe in a one-off Test at Trent Bridge last month. Archer was not considered for the first Test against India due to a broken thumb suffered while fielding in the Indian Premier League. It was the latest in a long line of injuries -- mainly to his elbow and back -- that have kept him out of Test action for more than four years. Despite his lengthy absence from red-ball internationals, express quick Archer is still regarded as a potential match-winner when England look to regain the Ashes in Australia during a 2025/26 tour. England now have a plan to get Archer ready for the second Test against India at Edgbaston in early July that would see the Barbados-born 30-year-old featuring for Sussex's 2nd XI followed by a County Championship game against Durham starting on June 22. If Archer comes through both matches with a clean bill of health, he could yet add to his tally of 13 Test caps after launching his international career in spectacular style in 2019 when he helped England win the 50-over World Cup and starred in a drawn Ashes series. "If things go well, he should be available for the second Test," Wright told reporters. "He's got to keep ticking off every day and getting no sort of setbacks, but if all goes well and Jofra gets through that Durham game, then he's available potentially for selection for that second Test. "We'll watch him in that game for Sussex and see where he's at. He's such a talent, it doesn't take him too long to get up to speed." England, with Gus Atkinson absent following a hamstring strain sustained during the Zimbabwe game, are expected to opt for a pace attack of Carse, Woakes and Josh Tongue in the first Test against India.

"Overpaid...": RCB Legend AB De Villiers' Shock Revelation After IPL 2025 Triumph
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched their first Indian Premier League (IPL) title on Tuesday, as they beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2025 final. Despite having had exceptional T20 cricketers like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in the past, it was the first time in 18 years that RCB won the title. While Gayle and de Villiers were present to celebrate with RCB, former India cricketer-turned-broadcaster Abhinav Mukund revealed an interesting remark that de Villiers had made to him, where he had said that he felt he was overpaid during his time as a player in the IPL. "I was sitting next to AB de Villiers and he told me something that I don't think any legend in the IPL has said. But he genuinely meant it, he said it from a place of emotion. He said 'I was overpaid'," Mukund revealed. "I'm overpaid, I thought I was overpaid because I feel like all of the other elements that you're talking about, right? Where you're able to buy so many other superstar players, all those match winners you're talking about. The highest amount of money that they spent on was for someone like a Phil Salt or Josh Hazlewood. They didn't cross 15 (Rs 15 crore)," was what de Villiers had told Mukund, as revealed by the latter. De Villiers was retained twice by RCB ahead of a mega auction over the course of his 11-year stint with the franchise. In an era where valuations where lesser, de Villiers was retained for Rs 7.50 crore and Rs 11 crore in 2014 and 2018 respectively. While RCB did not spend Rs 12.50 crore on any player at the mega auction, they did retain Virat Kohli for Rs 21 crore. They also went up to Rs 23.50 crore to try and get Venkatesh Iyer, who landed up in Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 23.75 crore. Mukund stated that not getting Venkatesh ended up working in RCB's favour, given that he scored just 142 runs in 11 matches in IPL 2025. "In hindsight, they must be thinking, thank God we didn't go all the way from Venkatesh Iyer. Because their last losing bid was Venkatesh Iyer. And the next three buys were Josh Hazlewood, Jitesh Sharma and I think Phil Salt. Those were the next three buys. And they saved so much in the bank for day two when Bhuvneshwar Kumar came in," said Mukund. Listen to the latest songs, only on
