Ringgit gains vs US dollar as Middle East tensions ease
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Tuesday on the rising possibility of military de-escalation in the Middle East as United States (US) President Donald Trump announced a tentative ceasefire between Iran and Israel, said an analyst.
At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2770/2980 against the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2915/2980.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.29 per cent to 98.416 points
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Iran have agreed to a tentative ceasefire, paving the way for resolving the military conflict.
He opined that traders and investors are moving away from safe-haven currencies as they believe the risk premium due to the Israel-Iran military conflict has somewhat reduced for now.
'Brent crude prices plunged to US$71.48 per barrel after hovering close to US$80 per barrel yesterday as prospects for de-escalation of military conflict are rising.
'As such, ringgit and other emerging market currencies are expected to perform favourably today in view of the positive development in the Middle East,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Afzanizam noted that US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a tentative ceasefire, paving the way for resolving the military conflict.
He also said that Brent crude prices plunged to US$71.48 per barrel after hovering close to US$80 per barrel yesterday as prospects for de-escalation of military conflict are rising.
At the opening, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies.
It trended lower against the Japanese yen at 2.9315/9461 from 2.9028/9074 at Monday's close, declined versus the British pound to 5.7932/8216 from 5.7437/7524, and fell against the euro to 4.9605/9848 from 4.9236/9311 previously.
The local note trended mixed against its ASEAN counterparts.
It advanced vis-a-vis the Indonesian rupiah to 259.3/260.7 from 260.2/260.7 at yesterday's close and gained against the Philippine peso to 7.42/7.46 from 7.44/7.46.
However, it depreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.3339/3507 from 3.3188/3243 and weakened to 13.0361/1081 from 12.9998/13.0250 versus the Thai baht previously.

DOSM: Malaysia's May 2025 inflation at 1.2 pct lowest in 51 months
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia registered an inflation rate of 1.2 per cent in May 2025, the lowest rate in 51 months, with the index points at 134.4 versus 132.8 a year ago, according to the Statistics Department Malaysia (DOSM). In a statement today (June 24), it said the slower inflation trend recorded by Malaysia as an open economy, was in line with the inflation in selected countries which recorded a slower increase in May this year, namely Eurozone (1.9 per cent), South Korea (1.9 per cent), Indonesia (1.6 per cent) and Philippines (1.3 per cent), in tandem with the decline in global oil prices. "The decline was also reflected through Producer Price Index (PPI), local production, which registered a -3.4 per cent in April this year," it said. — BERNAMA

Pakistan condemns Trump's bombing of Iran - a day after nominating him for Peace Prize
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan condemned on Sunday (June 22) the strikes ordered on its neighbour Iran by Donald Trump, a day after Islamabad had said it would nominate the US President for the Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistan on Sunday said Trump's decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities violated international law and that diplomacy was the only way to resolve the Iran crisis. "The unprecedented escalation of tension and violence, owing to ongoing aggression against Iran is deeply disturbing. Any further escalation of tensions will have severely damaging implications for the region and beyond,' Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Also on Sunday, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif (pic) telephoned Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and "conveyed Pakistan's condemnation of the US attacks," a statement from the Pakistani leader said. Pakistan's information minister and the foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the apparent contradiction in the country's positions over the weekend. In Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi, thousands marched in protest against the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. A large American flag with a picture of Trump on it was placed on the road for demonstrators to walk over. The protesters shouted out chants against America, Israel and Pakistan's regional enemy India.
