‘And then Yamal arrives..' : World Cup winner Thierry Henry hails Lamine Yamal amid comparisons with Messi and Ronaldo

As Barcelona played a 3-3 draw against Inter-Milan in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at Olympic Stadium, 17-year-old Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to score a goal in a Champions League semi-final with his opening goal for the Spanish's side's come from behind show in the semi-final. With Barcelona trailing by two goals in the match, Yamal scored the first goal in the team's 3-3 draw to create history. Former France striker and World Cup winner Thierry Henry has showered praise on the young Spanish international and terming him as the next best player in the football world and even better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
'We can talk about a lot of guys who are supposed to be on the throne and whatnot. But one thing that amazes me about football is that you always think there is no way someone is going to be better – or might be better – than Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo. Or in my time, Pele or (Diego) Maradona… And then Yamal arrives,' Henry told CBS Sports post the match.
Yamal also became the second youngest player at the age of 17 years and 291 days on Wednesday to start in a Champions League semi-final. The earlier record was held by Julian Draxler, who holds the record for playing in a Champions League Semi-final at an age of 17 years and 226 days playing for Schalke 04 against Manchester United in 2011. Yamal had earlier became the youngest player to score in both a Champions league round of 16 tie and quarterfinal during Barcelona's campaign this year. Yamal's goal was also his 20th goal in his 100 appearances at the club level. 'What I witnessed tonight from Lamine Yamal … it's not normal to be like that at 17. I am not talking about what he does when he's on the ball, his awareness, how calm he is, how he sees the game, the way he will defend, put pressure. It's just not normal. We talked about the 100 games that he already has at that age. It's just stupid, really. I don't even know what I'm watching, what I'm witnessing, but he played like a man possessed, and when I say 'a man,' he's not even a man yet, technically. It's just not normal.' Henry said during the UEFA Champions League Today post-match show.
As compared to Messi and Ronaldo, Yamal has a total of 50 goals and assists in his first 100 matches at the club level. Messi had a tally of 56 goals and assists (41 goals and 15 assists) while Ronaldo had a tally of 27 goals and assists (13 goals and 14 assists) in their first 100 matches at the club level. Yamal has achieved the feat of playing 100 matches at the club level at the age of 17 years and 291 days with Messi and Ronaldo achieving the same feat at the age of 20 years and 248 days and 19 years and 348 days respectively.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick too was in praise for the young star. 'I think he's special. I said it often before, he's a genius. During the game, when I look at the match from the outside, it's not like when you see after. You see all the details and it is unbelievable how he does it. At 17 years old, he's an unbelievable player and for me the important thing is he keeps going,' Flick said post the match.

Australian media blast Spurs' sacking of Postecoglou as 'big mistake'

Australian media on Saturday blasted Tottenham's decision to sack home hero Ange Postecoglou as a "big mistake", saying he had consistently shown himself to be a winner. The Australian, one of the nation's most successful managerial exports, steered Spurs to their first European prize in 41 years and secured a place in next season's Champions League. But he also oversaw their worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77, which ultimately cost him his job. The Sydney Morning Herald branded chairman Daniel Levy's decision "cold-hearted" and one the club "will almost certainly live to regret, regardless of whether his replacement is a success or not". "There will now always be an unanswerable 'what if' about the possibilities that lay within a third season at Spurs for Postecoglou," it said. "And there appears to be no hope that whoever comes in next will get what he needs to satisfy Levy, who seems to be prioritising higher finishes on the Premier League table than the idea of actually winning things." In a column for The Australian newspaper, former Socceroo and West Ham star Robbie Slater branded Postecoglou's firing "a big mistake". "Levy has left himself in a really, really difficult position now. He's already not liked by the Spurs fans and now he's taking a massive gamble here," he wrote. "Ange had promised 'season three is always better than season two'. Good luck with that Spurs." Former Australia and Celtic boss Postecoglou was the fifth manager sacked by Levy in the past six years. Australian national broadcaster ABC was more measured in its criticism, noting that "in the cold light of day, Postecoglou was always going to be hard pressed to keep his job". But it also questioned why Spurs would get rid of a man who delivered what he said he would winning a trophy in his second season in charge. "He has shown himself to be a winner in every league he has had an extended run in, be it Scotland, Australia, Japan and now England," it said. "Sacking Postecoglou fits with Tottenham's recent reputation of throwing away promising situations and making life uncomfortable or even torturous for its supporters." mp/tym CELTIC PLC TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Soccer-Hong keeps focus on World Cup after successful end to fraught campaign

June 7 - South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo sought to focus on his team's preparations for next year's World Cup rather than the fraught campaign that eventually ended with the country celebrating qualification for an 11th consecutive finals. A 2-0 victory over Iraq in Basra on Thursday confirmed South Korea's progress as one of two automatic qualifiers from Group B of Asia's preliminaries, and came 11 months on from Hong's controversial reappointment as head coach. "It's an opportunity for us to test young guys who may be able to play at the World Cup next year," Hong said of Tuesday's remaining qualifier against Kuwait in Seoul. "We won't have too many opportunities like this. It's one thing for those guys to watch from the bench, and quite another for them to play." Ex-national team captain Hong returned for a second spell in charge in July last year after a series of caretakers had been appointed following Juergen Klinsmann's underwhelming tenure, the German leaving in the aftermath of South Korea's Asian Cup elimination. The 56-year-old's appointment was greeted by protests among hardcore fans, many mindful of the team's performance under Hong at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, when a highly-fancied squad crashed out in the group phase. Relations with supporters were further damaged by early struggles in qualifying, with players booed off the field in Seoul following an opening 0-0 draw with Palestine in September. That showing was one of several that highlighted the team's issues on native soil. While Hong's side are unbeaten across the nine matches played so far in the third phase of qualifying, the Koreans have won just one of four matches at home. The poor quality of the pitches used was blamed by players for their underwhelming performances and was another reason tensions increased between the country's football hierarchy and the support base. Despite those issues, qualification means the Koreans will extend a run of unbroken World Cup appearances that stretches back to 1986, with Hong now charged with building his squad for the challenge that lies ahead in North America. That will mean giving opportunities to less experienced performers as he looks for long-term options to stalwarts such as Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan of Wolverhampton Wanderers. "From this moment on, everything we do will be geared toward preparing for the World Cup," said Hong.

Indian Archers Fail To Reach Medal Rounds At Archery World Cup Stage 3

Last Updated: Indian compound archers faced disappointment at the Archery World Cup Stage 3, failing to reach medal rounds. Indian compound archers faced disappointment at the Archery World Cup Stage 3, as none succeeded in reaching the medal rounds in the individual and mixed categories on Friday. India, who secured second place behind South Korea with two gold, one silver, and four bronze medals at the previous stage in Shanghai, have yet to claim any medals here. Madhura Dhamangaonkar, the fourth seed and last World Cup winner, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by fifth-seeded Mariana Bernal of Mexico, losing 152-159 in the women's individual section. Mariana maintained consistency throughout, while Madhura struggled to find her rhythm after scoring 29 out of a possible 33 in the opening round. World champion Aditi Swami also fell in the last-eight stage, losing 147-152 to Mexico's second-seeded Andrea Becerra. In the men's section, 13th seed Rishabh Yadav was defeated 149-157 in the quarterfinals by 28th seed Nicolas Girard of France. Yadav had previously edged out senior teammate Abhishek Verma 157-154 in the pre-quarterfinals. World champion Ojas Deotale suffered a surprising first-round exit, losing 157-161 to USA's James Lutz. India's hopes were further dampened in the compound mixed team event, as Madhura Dhamangaonkar and Rishabh Yadav lost 160-163 to their Estonian rivals. This result marked a disappointing follow-up to their bronze-medal finish in the mixed pair event at the previous World Cup leg in Shanghai. The recurve mixed team fared even worse. Ankita Bhakat and Dhiraj Bommadevara were knocked out in the opening round, losing 2-6 to Kazakhstan in a closely contested four-setter (38-40, 41-37, 37-38, 39-40). The Indian archers seemed to struggle with the new scoring rule implemented at this stage. Starting with the Antalya leg, the 'X' ring, the innermost circle, now counts as 11 points, increasing the perfect score per round (three arrows) from 30 to 33. Earlier on Thursday, India also crashed out of the team events in both the recurve and compound sections. With their team events campaign ending in disappointment, India will now look to the recurve individual events starting on Saturday. All eyes will be on former world youth champion Parth Salunkhe and seasoned campaigner Deepika Kumari, both of whom returned with bronze medals from Shanghai last month.
