Indian Archers Fail To Reach Medal Rounds At Archery World Cup Stage 3
Last Updated:
Indian compound archers faced disappointment at the Archery World Cup Stage 3, failing to reach medal rounds.
Indian compound archers faced disappointment at the Archery World Cup Stage 3, as none succeeded in reaching the medal rounds in the individual and mixed categories on Friday.
India, who secured second place behind South Korea with two gold, one silver, and four bronze medals at the previous stage in Shanghai, have yet to claim any medals here.
Madhura Dhamangaonkar, the fourth seed and last World Cup winner, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by fifth-seeded Mariana Bernal of Mexico, losing 152-159 in the women's individual section. Mariana maintained consistency throughout, while Madhura struggled to find her rhythm after scoring 29 out of a possible 33 in the opening round.
World champion Aditi Swami also fell in the last-eight stage, losing 147-152 to Mexico's second-seeded Andrea Becerra.
In the men's section, 13th seed Rishabh Yadav was defeated 149-157 in the quarterfinals by 28th seed Nicolas Girard of France. Yadav had previously edged out senior teammate Abhishek Verma 157-154 in the pre-quarterfinals.
World champion Ojas Deotale suffered a surprising first-round exit, losing 157-161 to USA's James Lutz.
India's hopes were further dampened in the compound mixed team event, as Madhura Dhamangaonkar and Rishabh Yadav lost 160-163 to their Estonian rivals. This result marked a disappointing follow-up to their bronze-medal finish in the mixed pair event at the previous World Cup leg in Shanghai.
The recurve mixed team fared even worse. Ankita Bhakat and Dhiraj Bommadevara were knocked out in the opening round, losing 2-6 to Kazakhstan in a closely contested four-setter (38-40, 41-37, 37-38, 39-40).
The Indian archers seemed to struggle with the new scoring rule implemented at this stage. Starting with the Antalya leg, the 'X' ring, the innermost circle, now counts as 11 points, increasing the perfect score per round (three arrows) from 30 to 33.
Earlier on Thursday, India also crashed out of the team events in both the recurve and compound sections.
With their team events campaign ending in disappointment, India will now look to the recurve individual events starting on Saturday. All eyes will be on former world youth champion Parth Salunkhe and seasoned campaigner Deepika Kumari, both of whom returned with bronze medals from Shanghai last month.

Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru Not just the Karnataka government officials, but RCB heads also bore the brunt of the deadly stampede that injured over 40 others after fans thronged outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, June 4. On Friday, a city court remanded four individuals — including Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Head of Marketing and Revenue, Nikhil Sosale — to 14 days in judicial custody in connection with the fatal stampede. Apart from transferring officials, the Karnataka government on Saturday ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigation into the stampede case. As part of the investigation, CID officials visited the office of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to gather preliminary information on the matter, ANI reported. As per ESPNCricinfo, top senior officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, have resigned from their posts, citing "moral responsibility" for the stampede. They submitted the resignations to the president of the board, Raghuram Bhat. The brutal stampede also left its footprints on social media. Following the tragedy, angry netizens, who were once all praise for Virat Kohli, demanded that the cricket icon be put behind bars. Bengaluru stampede: Open invitation without preparation is criminal negligence, says MP Tejasvi Surya
Bengaluru: Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the decision to hold an open invitation event at Chinnaswamy Stadium without logistical preparation as "criminal negligence" that culminated in the loss of 11 innocent lives. Drawing a comparison with the 2011 World Cup victory celebrations in Mumbai, Surya said despite the participation of over 15 lakh people there, no such tragedy occurred. That was because of better crowd management and planning in Mumbai, he pointed out. Surya lashed out at what he described as an "egotistical and irresponsible" attempt by the state's top leadership, including CM Siddaramiah and DCM DK Shivakumar, to get involved in RCB celebrations and "bask in undeserved glory". He alleged that despite being fully aware of the massive crowd that would gather for the event, the govt failed to make adequate safety arrangements. "It is not cricketers or fans who are to blame. The state govt, particularly the CM and DCM, orchestrated a scenario that led to this tragic stampede," Surya said. He urged the RCB franchise to show solidarity with its fanbase. "Even though there is no legal obligation, morally and humanely, the franchise should come forward to support and compensate the victims' families," Surya said.
