5 arrested after gun battle in Ladysmith CBD

The Citizen06-08-2025
This morning, five men stormed into a shop at the Plaza in the Ladysmith CBD and attempted to rob the place.
According to the Ladysmith Gazette, thanks to the swift response of reaction wardens from NN Alarms, the suspects' plans were, however, quickly foiled.
As the robbers tried to make their getaway, armed NN Alarms reaction wardens sprang into action, chasing one of the men through the streets. The man, desperate to escape, opened fire on his pursuers in Forbes Street and the security vehicle was hit a number of times.
According to a trusted source, the vehicle was hit 14 times.
The reaction wardens retaliated and, in the ensuing gun battle, the fleeing suspect was shot. When police arrived at the scene, the man was found seriously wounded and lying in a pool of blood. He received medical attention from EMS paramedics before being taken to hospital.
According to local police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, all five suspects – aged between 33 and 44 years old – are now in custody. In addition, a vehicle used during the crime, ammunition and two 9mm pistols were recovered during the arrests.

Ballistic reports expected as Marco Schalekamp returns to White River court

It's been more than a month since murder-accused Marco Schalekamp was denied bail on July 8 after he failed to prove the existence of exceptional circumstances during his bail hearing. According to Lowvelder, he is expected to appear in the White River Magistrate's Court on Thursday for his next hearing, in which ballistic reports could be presented to the court. He stands accused of premeditated murder and attempted murder following the fatal shooting of Pieter Burger and the wounding of Arno van Niekerk near the White River Rugby Club in the early hours of June 5. Hijackers make off with beer, leave truck in Babanango

Hijackers make off with beer, leave truck in Babanango A truck fully laden with crates of beer was hijacked in Babanango, KZN, yesterday and later found abandoned along the R68. According to Zululand Observer, Zululand Cluster police spokesperson Captain Nkosie Gwala says the truck was found empty. 'All the beer had gone. The 154 loaded crates were loaded at Ulundi Ultra Liquors and were being delivered to Nkandla Ikhwezi wholesalers on Tuesday. It is believed that it was hijacked at Ulundi 19. 'Police received a complaint and, together with Abe Jonstone from Zulutrack, the truck was found abandoned between Nkandla and Babanango without any stock,' Gwala adds. A search was conducted in the bushes for the missing beers. 'One hundred and forty-eight crates of Black Label beers were found hidden in the bushes. Six crates were not found. Police continued to search for suspects, but they were nowhere to be found,' says Gwala, and adds that a case of hijacking and theft was registered for further investigation. Lawyer, mother on trial: Teen girl identifies locations of sexual abuse

A 13-year-old girl has identified the guesthouses where she had sex, allegedly with a Heidelberg lawyer and his 'clients', a court heard yesterday. Carel Schoeman and his co-accused, the girl's mother, appeared in a High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, according to the Boksburg Advertiser. Schoeman, the lawyer, faces 26 charges, and the mother faces 72. Both pleaded not guilty to all charges during a previous court appearance. The charges include rape, sexual abuse of a minor, child trafficking, and pointing a firearm. The alleged crimes took place between mid-2022 and early 2023 across various areas in Gauteng, the Free State, and KZN, including Boksburg, Heidelberg, Brakpan, Springs, Villiers, Amanzimtoti, and Ramsgate. In his plea explanation, Schoeman claimed he believed the girl was 19 years old at the time of the alleged offences. During court proceedings yesterday, Warrant Officer Albertus Pelser, who assisted with the investigation, testified that the girl showed the police the locations where she had sexual intercourse, allegedly with Schoeman and several other 'clients'. Pelser said the girl pointed out a resort in Villiers, Free State, and guesthouses in Heidelberg, Brakpan, and Boksburg North. The mother's legal representative, Advocate Harold Davids, asked Pelser under cross-examination whether the girl ever used the term 'rape' or 'sexual exploitation'. Pelser explained that the girl simply told him where the alleged incidents with Schoeman or other men took place. Boksburg senior prosecutor Henk Strydom also testified. Strydom said he had a WhatsApp exchange with Schoeman but never met him professionally or personally. While sharing a printout of the conversation, Strydom highlighted that the document Schoeman sent was a voice note, which contradicts an exported message thread Schoeman submitted to the court. Strydom added he received no report from Schoeman and further testified that he did not delete a message from Schoeman but a message that he wrote to Schoeman. He explained that this message contained his email address. Strydom told the court that he deleted the message because he felt uncomfortable, as Schoeman had already given different versions of events. The trial continues.
