April 23 (Reuters) - Flying boats, double points and a three-hour pit stop will bring high-octane sailing drama to Portugal this August as Matosinhos-Porto secured a coveted spot on The Ocean Race Europe route – with ocean health activism sharing the spotlight alongside sporting glory.
The Portuguese coastal destination will host a "Fly-By" on Aug. 20 during the second leg from Portsmouth to Cartagena, it was announced on Wednesday, with the high-tech foiling IMOCA boats making a brief three-hour stop at Porto Cruise Terminal before continuing their journey to Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.
The Fly-By represents a critical sporting juncture, awarding half the points for the double-scoring second leg.
"It's very special to know that The Ocean Race Europe is stopping in Matosinhos because I know I will feel the warmth of Portugal and the Portuguese people in this extreme and hard competition," said Mariana Lobato, the only female Portuguese sailor who competed in the last round-the-world race and who will now be racing with Team Paprec Arkea.
The announcement, made during an event at Porto Cruise Terminal, highlighted how the race will spotlight ocean health initiatives alongside the sporting spectacle.
"Few competitions can claim to connect Europe more completely than The Ocean Race Europe," said Richard Brisius, Race Chairman. "This is a race that truly connects our continent, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, and into the Adriatic Sea."
The Ocean Race Europe 2025 will start from Kiel, Germany on Aug. 10, with stops in Portsmouth, Matosinhos-Porto, Cartagena, Nice, and Genoa before finishing at Boka Bay, Montenegro.
The race, launched in 2021, has swiftly become a marquee event on the offshore sailing calendar, delivering elite competition across Europe's iconic ports. Designed as a shorter, continental counterpart to the legendary round-the-world Ocean Race, it features cutting-edge IMOCA 60 and VO65 class yachts with mixed-gender crews tackling a blend of offshore legs and coastal sprints.
The IMOCA 60 is a cutting-edge 60-foot (18-metre) yacht known for its speed and ability to "fly" above the water using foils, while the VO65 is a 65-foot (20-metre) one-design conventional monohull boat built for strength, speed and close competition.
The inaugural edition saw Portugal's Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team clinch victory in the VO65 class, while Offshore Team Germany triumphed in the IMOCA 60 category. Beyond the fierce racing, the event underscores a commitment to environmental advocacy, leveraging its platform to champion ocean health and sustainability initiatives across the continent.

Manchester United and Arsenal are both in the hunt for Viktor Gyokeres, but it now looks like former club Coventry City will not earn anything from a sale despite previously agreeing a sell-on clause Coventry City will reportedly not receive any money if Sporting CP sell Viktor Gyokeres this summer, despite having negotiated a sell-on clause in his contract. The 27-year-old striker has caught the eye of several of Europe's biggest clubs since becoming one of the most lethal forwards on the continent in the past two seasons. Gyokeres netted a sensational 54 goals in 52 matches this term on his way to helping Sporting clinch a domestic double. Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus and Manchester United, managed by his former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim, have all shown interest in signing the Swede this summer. While he has a £84.7million release clause in his Sporting contract, it was initially thought that a £59m bid would be enough for the Portuguese champions to part ways with their star player. However, their president Frederico Varandas has since rubbished those claims, stating there is no gentleman's agreement in place to allow Gyokeres to leave for £59m. Varandas maintained that the only promise made to Gyokeres was that the club wouldn't demand his full release clause. Regardless of the price tag Gyokeres eventually leaves Sporting for, Coventry may not see any financial gain from his sale. The Sweden international spent two seasons with the Championship side following an initial loan deal from Brighton, netting 40 goals in 97 games before joining Sporting for an initial £20m. TalkSPORT has now reported that City sold their clause to Sporting last summer, waiving their right to a future transfer windfall in order to fund their own £18m transfer overhaul. The sell-on clause was said to be worth 10 per cent of any profit on the initial fee Sporting paid to originally sign the player. However, the Coventry Telegraph reported last summer that the fee was actually reduced by just five percent after Sporting paid the Championship side €1m (£843,500), in addition to the player hitting 'certain objectives' over the course of the season. Initially, Coventry stood to gain 15% of any profit on the initial fee paid by Sporting if Gyokeres was sold on. This percentage was subject to change based on the player's performance, including goals, appearances and club honours, which were add-ons to the initial fee, and amount to €2m (almost £1.7m). The Sky Blues are said to have received just over £2.5m in add-ons from the initial €20m (£17.5m) fee, bringing their earnings to date up to £20m. Despite the speculation surrounding Gyokeres, Sporting's Varandas has stated no official bids have been lodged yet. CNN Portugal supported that claim while saying Arsenal are leading the chase for the striker's signature, with the Gunners being his preferred pick over United. The report read: 'Arsenal are the club that Gyokeres has wanted from the very beginning. Gyokeres wants to play for Arsenal, he has stated this desire very openly to his agent. Officially, there has not been an offer yet, but there have been many contacts. This time, it seems that there will be [an offer].' Portuguese newspaper Record reported that Arsenal's hierarchy met with Gyokeres' representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, on Wednesday and an official offer from the Gunners is now expected. However, reports elsewhere have stated Arsenal's preference is to sign Benjamin Sesko this summer from RB Leipzig.

South Africa fight back but still trail Australia by 91 runs in WTC final
LONDON, June 12 (Reuters) - South Africa fought back at the start of the second day of the World Test Championship final against Australia but had captain Temba Bavuma dismissed before going to lunch on 121-5, still trailing by 91 runs. South Africa were in a precarious position at 43-4 overnight after Australia's pace attack had run through their top order, leaving them trailing by 169 runs after the defending champions scored 212 in their first innings. But Australia's hopes of more cheap dismissals on Thursday morning were stymied by Bavuma and David Bedingham as they employed a more attacking approach to their batting and put together a 64-run partnership before Bavuma was dismissed. The skipper went for 36 after driving into the covers and being caught by a diving Marnus Labuschagne off Pat Cummins, who had figures of 2-24 off 14 overs. Bavuma, whose innings included the first six of the match, had survived an lbw decision earlier when he was on 17 and trapped by Josh Hazlewood. U.S. Open underway as Oakmont awaits tournament favourite Scheffler

Amateur Matt Vogt, a former Oakmont caddie and current full-time dentist who qualified for the U.S. Open last week, had the honour of hitting the tournament's opening tee shot from the par-four first hole. Two-times U.S. Open winner DeChambeau, who went close at the year's first two majors, will set out at Oakmont in the company of British Open champion Xander Schauffele and Spain's Jose Luis Ballester at 7:29 a.m. ET (1129 GMT). World number one Scheffler, who counts the PGA Championship among his three wins in his last four starts, will head out in the company of two-times major winner Collin Morikawa and world number 14 Viktor Hovland at 1:25 p.m. ET. Oakmont, a quintessential U.S. Open venue where punishing ankle-high rough frames narrow fairways that lead to slick greens, is expected to be a brutal test of skill, mental toughness and resilience this week. Rory McIlroy, who has struggled off the tee since completing the career Grand Slam of golf's four majors with his Masters win in April, is scheduled to start from the 10th tee at 7:40 a.m. ET in the company of Shane Lowry and Justin Rose.
