Kerala health department issues COVID-19 guidelines, instructs hospitals to conduct mock drills
The Kerala health department will provide a Google Form for conducting an online mock drill.
The health department instructed the hospitals to follow the revised ABC Guidelines 03, issued in June 2023, while treating patients with COVID-19 and influenza symptoms.
The guidelines said that it is necessary to pay attention to whether there are any red flag signs in patients with COVID-19 and influenza symptoms. The red flag signs to be monitored are breathlessness, chest pain, drowsiness, fall in blood pressure, hemoptysis, cyanosis. Symptoms to watch for in children include somnolence, high persistent fever, inability to feed well, convulsions, dyspnoea, and respiratory distress.
The health department asked the high-risk individuals to wear masks in public places. Those with symptoms such as a cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath should wear masks if they are in relief camps.
The health department instructed groups at risk of becoming seriously ill if infected with COVID-19 to be especially careful. Elderly, pregnant women, and those with serious illnesses should wear masks. If they have any symptoms, they should inform the health department.
If anyone is diagnosed with COVID-19, treatment should be ensured as per the protocol.
As per the health department, all hospitalised patients with ILI/ARI/SARI symptoms should be tested for COVID-19. If the Rapid Antigen Test is negative, the RT-PCR test should be done.
The hospitals are urged to keep COVID-19 and influenza patients in separate wards or rooms in hospitals, and patients, their companions, and all health workers in hospitals are instructed to wear masks.
The number of bystanders and visitors in hospitals should be controlled, and a COVID-19 test should be conducted for bystanders and health workers with symptoms.
The state health department instructed RT-PCR facilities in districts to be used to the maximum extent for COVID-19 testing, and practices such as mask use, cough hygiene, and hand washing to be promoted in public places.
A guideline has been issued for the hospital facilities that urgently need to be adequately equipped. Availability of Oxygen supply, medicines, personal protective gear (N95 masks, gloves and aprons), oxygen-supported beds, ventilators and ICU beds should be ensured. (ANI)

PM inaugurates ₹2,000 crore highway projects for Haryana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two major national highway projects worth ₹2,000 crore which will directly benefit Haryana. These are construction of two new four-lane connectivity roads to Sonepat and Bahadurgarh under the Urban Extension Road-2 project. Listing out the projects which will be to Haryana's advantage, Saini named the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, Rail Coach Repair Factory, Kundli-Manesar-Palwal and Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressways, Gurugram-Sikanderpur and Faridabad-Ballabhgarh Metro Links, the country's first elevated railway track in Rohtak, the Rohtak-Meham-Hansi railway line, the National Cancer Institute at AIIMS Jhajjar, and AIIMS in Rewari. He said that Haryana recently received the gift of a metro corridor from Rithala to Kundli. The chief minister also said that these initiatives will give a new impetus to investment, employment and industrial development in the state, further strengthening Haryana's contribution to the national economy.

NZP to set up India's first biosafety level-3 lab for animal disease detection
Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) intends to set up a biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) lab on its premises soon, officials from the zoo said. A BSL-3 lab is a disease-detecting facility used to identify zoonotic diseases in animals and prevent their spread to human beings and vice versa. Once operational, it will help the zoo conduct everyday testing of the animals, help control the spread of viral infections, and also prepare for long-term disease management. "We have seen what COVID-19, a zoonotic disease that was transmitted from bats, could do to the human population. With the lab in place, we can constantly monitor the health of the animals and any potential viruses they may be carrying. Moreover, in a zoo like ours, where animal-human interaction is high, it becomes even more important to set up this lab to safeguard our visitors," said Sunil S Hiremath, the director of NZP. Presently, the zoo has a veterinary hospital that it uses to treat its animals for medical conditions and an in-house lab, where the zoo uses faecal and blood sample analysis for primary disease diagnosis like salmonellosis, gastrointestinal issues like acute or chronic gastroenteritis, and conditions like tuberculosis. Currently, the zoo is in the process of drafting a proposal to the central govt to get the necessary approvals. Once the project is approved, it will be launched as a govt of India project, officials said. "My team and I are in the process of finalising the details for the lab. Once that is done, we should have a clearer picture of how much the lab is going to cost us and how much space it will take," the director said. "We have the necessary manpower to run it successfully too. We have so many qualified scientists in the zoo, and the city is home to a number of reputed veterinary institutes and colleges like the VBRI and the Veterinary University in Rajendranagar, with whom we'll collaborate," the director added.
