NHS staff honoured at British Dietetic Association Awards

The ceremony was held during Dietitians Week, recognising the outstanding commitment and contributions to the profession both locally and across Scotland.
For the third consecutive year, the West of Scotland Branch was named BDA Branch of the Year, underlining its consistent excellence and far-reaching support for members across all levels of dietetic practice—from academic to clinical.

(Image: Supplied) The branch was praised for its strong collaboration with the Scotland Board, as well as its delivery of awards, webinars, and student engagement initiatives.
Two NHSGGC individuals also received prestigious accolades. Michelle Wardrop, Community Manager of Dietetics, was awarded the Edith Elliot Honour, becoming the first recipient in the UK to receive this distinguished recognition.
Reflecting on the achievement, Michelle said: "There are a range of words that describe how I feel, including overjoyed, humbled, delighted, elated and thrilled - the list goes on.
"I love being a dietitian, and it is a joy to have received this award for doing a job I love."
Michelle shared that her journey into dietetics stemmed from a long-standing passion for healthcare and nutrition: "I had a real desire to work in the health care environment.
"I chose to become a dietitian as I was fascinated by how nutrition impacts people's health and wellbeing, across all ages.
"I loved the fact that there are so many different specialities that a dietitian can work in, and I have been fortunate to work in many different roles."
She also highlighted the sources of her inspiration, citing both culinary icons and fellow professionals: "Probably like many dietitians, my love of food means I enjoy cookery programmes.
"I particularly enjoy watching chefs such as Mary Berry, Michel Roux Jr., and Raymond Blanc.
"I have also worked with many different dietitians during my career. So many of them have influenced and shaped the dietitian I am today."

Meanwhile, Abigail Dean, Advanced Practice Dietitian in Haemato-Oncology, received the Mary Turner Award for Trade Union Representative of the Year.
The award celebrates individuals who exemplify excellence, empathy, and commitment in their advocacy for colleagues.
She said: "I am thrilled to have received this award.
"It's an honour to receive this in recognition of my work over the last year.
"I want to thank all my colleagues and hope I can continue to represent them in the best possible way in my role as Trade Union Representative."
The BDA commended Abigail as 'a shining example of what a local union rep should be—approachable, knowledgeable, and able to listen,' describing her as 'a worthy recipient of the Mary Turner Award this year.'
Celebrating the West of Scotland Branch's third straight win, Clare McKenzie, Chair of the Branch, said: "We are delighted that we won Branch of the Year. This is now our sixth overall win and the second since I've been in this role.
"I'd like to thank all my West of Scotland Branch colleagues, particularly Nikola Mazur, Events Officer, and Amy Cowan, Treasurer.
"They both joined the committee last summer and deserve considerable credit for our continued success."
She also encouraged wider participation from members across Scotland, noting current opportunities to get involved with the committee.

While recent local elections show growing support for simplistic solutions, Barnsley is proving that practical innovation trumps political division and false promises. The Pathways to Work Commission, established by Barnsley Council and chaired by former Labour health secretary Alan Milburn, found seven in ten economically inactive people would take suitable employment. This suggests 4.5 million out-of-work Britons could enter the jobs market with proper support, far more than the 1.37 million in official figures. The commission identified 'a catastrophic failure' in the benefits, health and employment system with 'a chaotic mass' of initiatives impossible for users to navigate. The system fails to provide tailored support for complex needs with insufficient integration of services. There is little engagement with employers to create suitable jobs and, typical of centralised programmes, no recognition of local labour market conditions. Consider Michelle, whose story epitomises this state of affairs. After working in childcare and adult social care before a career break for her children, the Barnsley mum found herself unable to find work that fitted around her childcare responsibilities while her husband worked night shifts. Despite being on Universal Credit, she received no support and navigated the system alone. We believe that integrating health, skills and employment support creates better outcomes for people. Our holistic approach addresses multiple barriers simultaneously. Improved coordination between services leads to effective support, improving health, skills, employment prospects and job retention. That's why we're pioneering the UK's largest-ever relocation of hospital outpatient services to our town centre. By autumn, Barnsley Hospital will begin transferring services to the Alhambra Shopping Centre, building on our NHS Community Diagnostic Centre that has already welcomed 220,000 appointments and reduced missed appointments by 24 percent. This initiative will generate 250,000 additional annual visits to our newly regenerated town centre, injecting at least £1.5 million into the local economy. Another key barrier is the skills gap, which we're addressing through our new National Centre for Digital Technologies. This facility will equip residents with essential digital skills, helping parents like Michelle access flexible careers that accommodate family responsibilities while supporting our growing tech sector. We're engaging with our top 20 employers in designing services to ensure they meet business needs while creating inclusive practices and reducing workplace stigma. The approach includes community partners engaging with hard-to-reach residents, providing each individual with a dedicated case manager who helps them navigate services, overcome barriers, and build skills. Meanwhile, GPs identify at-risk employees for early support. Every area has its unique history and circumstances. Localised approaches respond better to specific needs. Greater flexibility allows for solutions tailored to local markets through partnerships based on local knowledge and networks. Last month, Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall endorsed our approach for national rollout. Working closely with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, our model aims to get 10,000 economically inactive South Yorkshire residents into work by 2028. The recent elections revealed voter frustration with economic stagnation and immigration policies, but Barnsley demonstrates that real solutions lie in practical innovation, not division. The pendulum must move toward getting Britons back to work rather than assuming labour shortages are best addressed through immigration alone. Raising the UK's labour market participation rate from 78 to 80 per cent would boost the economy by £23 billion annually. We are expecting a four-to-one return on investment for the Treasury from our proof-of-concept project, alongside nearly £30 million in additional economic benefits to the local economy from a £10 million investment. This represents major public service reform that delivers results for individuals, communities and taxpayers alike. Bravo star Michelle Saniei has opened up about the death of her mother, who had been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer just a number of months before she died A reality star has revealed her mum initially thought she had food poisoning but was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Michelle Saniei, who stars on The Valley, opened up about her mother's death during the latest episode of the show. Her mum had visited the GP with symptoms she initially believed were caused by food poisoning, but in a heartbreaking twist, she later discovered she had cancer. The episode, which airs on Bravo, was filmed in the summer of 2024, with her mum sadly dying just months later in November. ‌ During a conversation with her co-star, Lala Kent, Michelle said she doesn't speak about her mum's diagnosis "a lot." Speaking to Lala, she said: "My mom got sick about a year ago when I was going through everything with Jesse [Lally]. ‌ "She thought she had food poisoning and had to go to the doctor, and she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer." In an emotional admission, she went on to add: "She did her first treatment of chemo, and it did not work. "So then now she's in her second treatment, but the problem is it's kind of everywhere now. She's just like by day, it's killing her from the inside out. I don't think I have much longer with her. It's been very hard for me because my mom is my best friend and the one who supports me the most," before she started to tear up." The NHS states that bowel cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer people in the UK are diagnosed with. Most people who are diagnosed tend to be over the age of 60. Symptoms include changes in poo – such as softer poo, constipation or diarrhoea, needing to poo more or less often, blood in poo, tummy pains, bloating or losing weight without trying. While it is not known what causes the cancer, people are more likely to be diagnosed if they are over 50, smoke, are overweight or have inflammatory bowel disease, as well as small growths on the bowel. Treatment varies depending on the size of the cancer, whether it is in the colon or rectum, if it has spread and age. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and targeted medicines are used to treat the disease. Michelle's mum sadly died on November 5, 2024, just months after her diagnosis. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday to honour her mum as the episode aired, Michelle shared a series of images of herself with her mum. ‌ Captioning her post, she wrote: "Sharing my heart with you tonight. This was the first time I spoke on camera about my mom's battle with cancer. She's no longer with us, but her love and strength are with me every day. "I miss her deeply, and I'm grateful to share a little piece of her with you. Tonight is for you, Mom. I miss you every day." Her upload was flooded with messages of support, with Nia Sanchez replying: "Sending you extra love tonight." ‌ Scheana Shay added: "I love you soooo much! Your mama is so proud of you and always watching over you! You look so much like her in the second pic!" Aaron Nosler gushed: "It was an honour to get to know her, and so special that she saw our relationship take shape and become full of love. She surrounds you still and shows you signs." Vivian Tesler said: "I lost my mother to cancer 2 years ago. We are about the same age as you and I. There is not one day I don't think about her. How I understand your words and heart. Sending you strength. We are in this together." One fan commented: "Right now im watching the new episode & thanks for sharing her with us, those pictures are really beautiful, your mom will always be watching over you & your daughter Isabella." The emotional episode also gave fans an insight into Michelle's life as she continues to navigate her life following her divorce from Jesse Lally, which aired in the second season.
