Gavin Henson thinks Owen Farrell may be called up during the Lions tour, and has made a bold call on who he thinks should wear the number 10 jersey in the first Test against the Wallabies on July 19.
Going into 2025, most rugby fans and pundits assumed that Scotland international Finn Russell would be a guaranteed starter come that first game against Joe Schmidt's side. He'd been a star performer for Bath and excelled on the Test stage for quite some time. However, Northampton Saints number 10 Fin Smith emerged as a potential competitor after impressing for Steve Borthwick and England in the Six Nations.
Speaking in an interview with The Rugby Paper, former Wales international Henson explained that he thinks Andy Farrell would be better off selecting Smith over Russell in the first Test.
Henson explained that Russell tends to "boss" games and "everyone else has to understand and work out what he is going to do next with the ball."
"The number 10 spot is a big decision for Farrell to make… probably the biggest," Henson said.
"Personally, I would start with Smith. He brings other players around him into the game, whereby with Finn Russell it is more of an individual thing. You need to bring the whole game around him - and I'm not sure we have the time with the limited warm-up games to do that.

"For me, it is going to be a big call to put Russell in for that first Test because of the way he plays. He likes to boss it and everyone else has to understand and work out what he is going to do next with the ball.
"Whether that can all come together so quickly is difficult. But with Smith, it will probably just all click into place easily because he makes other players look good… it's all about them and not just the number 10."
One fly-half not on tour is Saracens-bound Farrell, who has not been involved in international rugby of late, after he decided to take a break for the betterment of his mental health.
Despite this, Henson believes Lions boss Farrell could pick his own son further down the line. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack for the exclusive five-week tour diary from Japan and Australia.
"I believe (Andy) Farrell will get it right. He's a great guy, great talker and a great leader. I wasn't surprised he didn't pick his son as he has been injured and not playing international rugby.
"But I will be surprised if he doesn't end up out there."

Farrell has been playing his rugby out in the Top 14 with Racing 92, but it was confirmed earlier this month that the legendary fly-half would be returning to Saracens on a two-year deal.

Springbok star issues apology as Rassie Erasmus turns air blue after stunning collapse
Springbok star issues apology as Rassie Erasmus turns air blue after stunning collapse South Africa fell to a shock defeat at the hands of Australia in the opening match of The Rugby Championship Siya Kolisi of South Africa (Image:) South Africa captain Siya Kolisi has issued a heartfelt apology to supporters after his side's "unacceptable" defeat to Australia in the opening match of The Rugby Championship. The Springboks raced into a commanding 22-0 lead inside the opening quarter at Ellis Park on Saturday, but completely collapsed as the Wallabies mounted a remarkable comeback to claim a historic 38-22 win and leave the hosts stunned. Not only was it a first win for Joe Schmidt's side at Ellis Park since 1963, it was also their first win anywhere in South Africa for 14 years. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. The shock defeat left head coach Rassie Erasmus furious, as he confessed to reporters after the match that he was "embarrassed" having watched his side be "tactically out-smarted" and "physically dominated" by Schmidt's men. Skipper Kolisi has also addressed his side's "unacceptable" performance in the wake of the shock result, telling SuperSport that he and his team-mates only have themselves to blame. 'We let ourselves down today,' said the 34-year-old back rower. "The things we worked on – discipline, the breakdown – they definitely won the breakdown battles. We didn't put them under enough pressure. "We let ourselves down a lot and we have to take that on the chin. It's unacceptable the way we performed. You can't start like that, then take your foot off the pedal. That's just unacceptable from us. Article continues below 'It was the errors, but also the breakdown," he added. "We'd fight, get into the 22, and then they'd steal the ball. It's something we knew they would do, because they've been good at it. We just didn't look after the ball well enough.' Kolisi, who was making his first Test start at No.8, went on to praise the Wallabies for their performance before apologising to the home fans for what they had just witnessed. 'They played really well," he continued. "Credit to the Australian team – they kept on fighting, they never gave up even though we started well and went ahead. So well done to them. But from us, you can see from the boys we're not proud of the performance we put out today. 'We're not going to drop our heads. We'll go again next week and fight. Whoever gets the opportunity to play, we're going to take it. There's not much else we can do now but fight. 'Thank you to everybody who supported us. Sorry about the performance, but we'll come again next week.' The Springbok legend's words came as his head coach Erasmus was turning the air blue in his post-match press conference with an even more frank assessment of his side's performance, which he described as "dog s***". "I must be honest, it is probably one of the most embarrassing press conferences I've done in a while," he said. "Not because we were awful, they were really good and I want to put the old cliché out there, credit to them, they were good - but we made them better with our poor performance. "To be 22-0 up, we did the same against Italy, 27-3 up and then we let teams back in. Yes, we gave them one or two soft tries but overall they were just better than us on the day in most departments and yeah, we as coaches got it terribly wrong, and we have to look first at ourselves before we point fingers at the players." Erasmus added: "We know that from now to next Saturday we have to take a lot of flak and we're very disappointed, we feel bad for our supporters and are feeling bad for our players overall for what we produced. Article continues below "I don't think they tactically out-smarted us, I think they also physically dominated us. The saddest thing is we didn't even fight back to take a bonus point away. Listen man, I can butter this up to sound cool and respectful, but we were really dog s*** on the day."

Australia's sensational 38-22 win against South Africa at Ellis Park to kick off their 2025 Rugby Championship campaign has come at a cost after it was revealed that winger Dylan Pietsch and prop James Slipper will miss next weekend's rematch. Pietsch scored the Wallabies' opening try to spark a comeback from 22-0 down, the visitors landing 38 unanswered points to stun the Springboks in their own back yard and give them their first win in Johannesburg since 1963. Utility back Ben Donaldson has also left the camp due to a groin issue. Australia took some knocks during the win over South Africa. | Getty Images Australia head coach Joe Schmidt has subsequently called up Filipo Daugunu, Rhys van Nek and Hamish Stewart as cover, and he hopes that key forward Rob Valetini can be involved after missing out in Joburg with a calf issue. The Wallabies' comeback came as major surprise, particularly as the Boks raced into 22-point lead inside 16 minutes. Schmidt suggested that the hosts became complacent. 'I've coached enough teams because I'm really old and I've had teams that get a, I wouldn't say a soft start but a very, very rapid start,' he said. 'It can sometimes cause a bit of a lapse in effort and concentration. I think they just gave us a little bit of belief.' Club Brugge will attempt to fend off more interest for one of their most proficient forwards ahead of facing Rangers in the Champions League play-offs. The Belgian side are due at Ibrox on Tuesday night for the first leg of their tie before welcoming Rangers back to the Jan Breydel Stadium a week on Wednesday for the return game. The winner will advance to the main phase of the Champions League. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, Club Brugge's resolve is set to be tested in the transfer market after it emerged that English Premier League side Crystal Palace hold a significant interest in their Greek forward Christos Tzolis. Greek forward Christos Tzolis is a key part of Club Brugge's front line. | Getty Images Palace are preparing for life without their own star man in Eberechi Eze, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, and reports on Sunday morning claimed that Tzolis has been identified by Eagles head coach Oliver Glasner and his recruitment team as a potential replacement. Tzolis, 23, signed a contract extension with Club Brugge last month until the summer of 2029 and would command a large transfer fee. He contributed 21 goals and 14 assists, predominantly from left wing, last season after joining from Fortuna Dusseldorf. Capped 24 times by Greece, Tzolis is still expected to travel to Glasgow on Monday afternoon to prepare for the match against Rangers despite the heightened demand for his services. Club Brugge are reported to have turned down an approach for him from Palace earlier this summer, but are now braced for a further bid and will not want speculation over the player's future to disrupt their preparations for a key Champions League match. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Tzolis is key player for Club Brugge Tzolis has started all of Club Brugge's competitive matches this season, providing three goals and two assists, and put in a stellar performance last Wednesday as the Belgians overcame Salzburg to set up the match against Rangers. He played the full 90 minutes on Saturday evening as Club Brugge won 1-0 away at Waregem in the Jupiler Pro League, relying on a strike from South African 20-year-old Shandre Campbell in stoppage time to clinch the win. In the last round, Rangers benefitted from opponents Viktoria Plzen being rocked by the transfer of their key midfielder Pavel Sulc, who was granted permission to seal a move to Lyon 24 hours ahead of the first leg at Ibrox. Rangers went on to win 3-0 before losing the second leg 2-1 in Czech Republic. Club Brugge are the favourites to win against Rangers across the two legs of the Champions League play-off tie. The two teams met in a pre-season friendly last month at Ibrox, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Tzolis played the first half and helped the Belgians establish a 2-0 lead before they made significant changes to their team.
