Jos Buttler: Captain Shubman Gill is a mix of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

Indian Express4 hours ago

England batsman Jos Buttler who played Shubman Gill at Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has given his verdict about the 25-year-old's captaincy style saying he has a mix of Virat Kohli's intensity and Rohit Sharma's laid-back character. Gill who has been appointed as India's new Test captain will begin his tenure with the first Test against England starting on Friday at Headingley.
Speaking on For the Love of Cricket, his new podcast with Stuart Broad, Buttler said he expected Gill to be his own man who won't try to copy his predecessors. 'He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man,' Buttler said. 'He's pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but it's interesting, I feel like on the field he's got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit.
Buttler then went on to elaborate. 'Kohli was that sort of real aggressive character, really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight. I feel like, from my time knowing Shubman so far, he'll be a bit in the middle. He's obviously learned from those two guys… but he'll be very much his own man,' Buttler added.
Speaking on what will be Gill's biggest challenge, Buttler said the young Indian batsman shouldn't let his captaincy affect his batting. During his captaincy stint with England white-ball team, with the team struggling in both the 50-over and T20 World Cup, Buttler's own batting form suffered.
'He talked about compartmentalising batting and captaining; so when he's batting he just wants to be a batter, and then he will try and work on his captaincy and try and separate the two roles. When you're doing such a big job as being captain of the Indian cricket team, he'll have to try and do that well and have some good people supporting him,' Buttler said.
Buttler also touched upon the stardom that Indian cricketers have to put up with which brings about its own expectations which make it all the more challenging. 'It's going to be a huge job for him. He's obviously captained two seasons of IPL cricket, which is a big, pressurised job and he's sort of the prince. Kohli is the king, Shubman is the prince: that's the narrative that they spin out there, and I feel that he's the coming man… Stepping into that No. 4, it's big shoes, isn't it? Coming behind Virat, and Sachin Tendulkar before that as well. That's obviously a huge role,' Buttler added.

Jasprit Bumrah confirms he can't commit to all five Tests vs England: 'Three is what I can manage'

India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has all but confirmed his availability for three matches in the upcoming five-Test series against England, set to begin on June 20. The series will kick off India's new World Test Championship cycle and mark Bumrah's return to red-ball cricket after a lengthy injury layoff. The premier fast bowler hasn't featured in international cricket since the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in January, where a back injury once again forced him to the sidelines. During an interview with former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik for Sky Sports Cricket, Bumrah confirmed that he won't be available for all Tests due to workload concerns. He stated that the team management is currently planning three Tests with him, but opened the scope for more matches depending on the workload. 'Plan on the go. 3 Test matches is what I'm looking at,' Bumrah said. 'Obviously, the number is not decided. First (Test) is definitely on, that is going to happen. Rest, we will see how things are, what is the workload and scenario... but yes. 3 Tests is what I can manage at the moment.' Bumrah insisted that he doesn't want to exert himself in the longest format, and added that the major reason behind his decision to refuse Indian captaincy was his concerns surrounding workload management. 'I don't want to be in a desperate scenario. That is one part as well. If I would've been a captain, I can't be dictating that I can only play 3 Test matches. That doesn't send a good message to the team. I want to be at my best as a player and contribute to the best of my capability,' said Bumrah. Shubman Gill will lead the Indian Test team for the first time during the series against England. The decision was announced last month, following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the format. Bumrah had been India's vice-captain under Rohit's leadership and had also led the side in two matches during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, the fast bowler's tryst with injuries eventually became the major roadblock for his selection as the next Indian skipper. India face England in the first Test at Headingley; in addition to Rohit, Virat Kohli had also retired from the format last month.

Asia Cup Venue Changed As Officials Hope To Avoid Cancellation: Report

Last Updated: The ACC has reportedly shifted the 2025 Asia Cup from India to the UAE as officials continue to hope that the tournament will go ahead despite India-Pakistan tensions. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC), chaired by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi, has reportedly moved the 2025 men's Asia Cup to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), despite India being the official host. Clouds still remain over whether the competition will be played at all, in light of the tensions between the two biggest participant nations, India and Pakistan, but officials hope a change in venue will help. According to Forbes, a final decision is expected at the ICC's Annual General Meeting in Singapore next month. But for now, it seems to be decided that the UAE will host the tournament if it goes ahead. It has beaten competition from Sri Lanka, the host of the last edition in 2023, which was also in strong running. India and Pakistan had already reached an arrangement before the 2025 Champions Trophy, where all of their multi-national tournament matches for the foreseeable future will be held in neutral venues. The Asia Cup was put under further doubt after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which took the lives of 26 innocents in Kashmir, and led to retaliatory action from India, bringing it on the brink of a war with Pakistan. Several reports in India have claimed that the tournament won't go ahead, but stakeholders remain cautiously optimistic. 'Things have been quiet amid the tension, and there is much to play out, but there is still time," Forbes cited an official close to discussions as saying. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has also denied rumors of India's 'opting out' of the tournament. Sportstar. The UAE has been a backup neutral venue of several such emergency scenarios, including the Champions Trophy's India matches and some IPL editions. The Cup, if it goes ahead, will be played in the T20 format as preparations for next year's T20 World Cup. First Published: June 17, 2025, 12:38 IST
