No star, no action, yet this film became the highest-grossing Indian movie overseas, made in Rs 5 crore, earned Rs..., lead actors were...
Indian films are enjoyed tremendously all over the world and this becomes the reason why a lot of Indian films have worldwide releases. Movies like Leo, Jailer, Pathaan, Gadar 2 have worked well overseas. But do you know which independent film with no stars and a low budget managed to surpass the biggest hits of Bollywood superstars- Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan? Made in Rs 5 crore, the film we are talking about is called Monsoon wedding (2001). How did the makers come with the idea of film Monsoon Wedding?
Helmed by noted filmmaker Mira Nair, the film starred a talented ensemble cast including actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Lillette Dubey, Parvin Dabas, Vijay Raaz, Shefali Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Soni Razdan, Roshan Seth, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Newcomers Vasundhara Das, Randeep Hooda, and Ram Kapoor were also the part of the film. Backed internationally between companies from India, the United States, Italy, France, and Germany, Monsoon Wedding broke all box office expectations.
Interestingly, screenwriter Sabrina Dhawan wrote the storyline about an Indian Family in Delhi while she was at MFA film program at Columbia University. She then pitched the idea to Director Mira Nair, who came on board, and that's how the film came to be known as Monsoon Wedding. How much Monsoon Wedding earned overseas?
Monsoon Wedding became the first Hindi film to earn Rs 100 crore outside India. It saw a splendid success in North American Market and Europe, earning overall $30.8 million ( Rs 145 crore) worldwide. Before Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Aamir Khan's Dangal took the spot of highest-ever grossers, Monsoon Wedding enjoyed its success overseas.
Monsoon Wedding was widely appreciated and received award nominations such as BAFTA and Golden Globe in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Apart from appreciations, the film also surpassed the hits of superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. In 2001, when Monsoon Wedding released, SRK's Asoka and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham also had theatrical releases. Although, the films were successes overseas, but their combined overseas collection was just Rs 60 crore, lower than Monsoon Wedding. Even Aamir Khan's Oscar-Nominated film Lagaan, couldn't break Monsoon Wedding's record, earning just Rs 13 crore overseas.

Ghai shared an old photo from an award ceremony with the actor, along with an emotional note that quickly caught the attention of fans online. In the photo, Ghai and Irrfan can be seen smiling. Ghai, who worked with Irrfan in the film 'Right Yaa Wrong,' took to his Instagram account to share a post praising him not just as an actor but as someone who deeply understood the art of storytelling. He wrote, 'I have always been more in admiration of good and great actors than just cosmetic stars of any time. Good actors enhance storytelling--stars play stars to glitter the film. I was more happy to receive compliments from Irrfan than an award at an award function. So, I remember this picture vividly. We miss you, Irrfan.' Take a look Irrfan Khan is considered one of the best actors in the Indian film industry. The legendary Indian actor made his debut with the Oscar-nominated Hindi film Salaam Bombay! and went on to star in some of the most critically acclaimed films in India like Life in a... He performed exceptionally well in several international projects, which garnered him significant recognition abroad and put him on the map of world cinema. Box Office: Maa scores good results in opening weekend, Kajol starrer collects Rs 17.25 crore in 3 day
Maa, starring Kajol in the lead role, is holding up well at the box office. The mytho-horror drama, directed by Vishal Furia, has met with mixed bag reactions, but managed to impress with its folklore and horror factor. Maa clocks Rs 6.50 crore on Day 3, approaches Rs 20 crore mark Bankrolled by Devgn Films and Panorama Studios, Maa debuted with Rs 4.75 crore on its debut day. The movie further witnessed a good jump of 26% and collected Rs 6 crore on Day 2. As per estimates, the mytho-horror drama saw another jump of 10% today and added Rs 6.50 crore to the tally. The total three-day cume of Maa now stands at Rs 17.25 crore net at the Indian box office. Though this is an impressive figure for a Kajol starrer, the movie could have performed much better had it opened to superlative word-of-mouth. Moreover, one cannot ignore that the makers lured the audience with a BUY-TWO-GET-ONE-FREE offer on the tickets. The real test of Maa will begin from Monday onwards. If the movie manages to hold well and register a reasonable drop, it can see a long run at the box office. Maa faces tough competition from Sitaare Zameen Par and F1 (Formula One) Though Maa had better screens than Brad Pitt's F1 (Formula One), it still remained behind. The Kajol starrer also faced a major dent by Aamir Khan's holdover release, Sitaare Zameen Par, which witnessed a 100% growth from its second Friday to second Saturday. It will be interesting to see how Maa performs further on the weekdays. It will have a new competition from next weekend onwards as Anurag Basu's romantic drama, Metro…In Dino, is slated to hit the screens on July 4th.
