Mansa Devi Stampede: Shopkeepers Started Hitting Us, Say Survivors

Panic broke out on the steep, crowded road leading up to the Mansa Devi temple when conflicting accounts sparked confusion and fear.
In a tragic incident, 8 pilgrims lost their lives while more than 30 were injured in a stampede near the Mansa Devi temple on the morning of July 27, triggering chaos that survivors say could have been prevented. Most of the victims were from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, drawn to the temple during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra.
The panic broke out on the steep, crowded road leading up to the temple when conflicting accounts sparked confusion and fear. Some claim rumours of an electric current spreading through the area caused people to flee. Others say it started when local shopkeepers began hitting devotees with sticks to clear the way.
Vikas, a devotee from Bareilly, said the situation unraveled quickly after the temple doors were closed. 'People were returning, saying darshan was over. Then suddenly someone shouted that there was an electric current. Everyone panicked and started running," Vikas recalled.
The crush of people heading both toward and away from the temple funneled into a narrow passage near the market. Anita Kumari, who was visiting with her family, said, 'There was no space to move. Those returning shouted that the temple was closed. People got scared and started running back. Everyone began pushing."
Amid the chaos, tragedy struck. Anita lost her 13-year-old nephew in the melee. Her 5-year-old niece survived but suffered injuries. If police had been stationed there, this wouldn't have happened, she said, holding back tears. 'There was no one to control the crowd. No barriers. Nothing," Anita added.
Another woman, Nirmala, tried to shield her children by throwing herself on top of them. Her 13-year-old son died while her younger daughter suffered a fractured leg and required 14 stitches. 'I heard people screaming, 'Go back! The temple is closed!'" Nirmala recounted. But the exit was jammed. People trampled each other, she said.
Durga Devi, who had come from Bihar for darshan, said the crush near the market was intensified by people moving in opposite directions. 'Everyone was shouting. People going for darshan and those returning collided in the same spot. Suddenly, people were pushing from all sides," Durga reminisced.
But perhaps the most disturbing detail came from multiple victims who claimed shopkeepers worsened the situation. Instead of offering help, some began using sticks to disperse the crowd.
'The shopkeepers were beating people with lathis," Durga Devi said, adding, 'They could've let us into their shops to rest. Instead, they hit us. That's when people really started to panic. Whoever fell got trampled."
Soon after the stampede, Haridwar police and disaster response teams rushed to the spot and began evacuating the injured to the district hospital. The hospital quickly turned into a crisis center as families rushed in, looking for missing relatives.
Officials are yet to release a formal cause of the incident. However, survivor testimonies point to a deadly mix of poor crowd control, miscommunication, and a complete lack of emergency planning.

'Driver Fell Asleep...': Locals Recall Bus Crash That Killed 18 Kanwariyas In Deoghar

Last Updated: A bus carrying Kanwar Yatra pilgrims crashed into a gas cylinder truck and roadside bricks near Jamunia Chowk, Bihar-Jharkhand border, killing 18 News18 What began as a spiritual pilgrimage ended in horror on Tuesday morning when a momentary lapse by a bus driver cost 18 lives and left 23 others injured near the Bihar-Jharkhand border. Around 4:30 am, a private bus ferrying Kanwariyas returning from their yatra to Baba Baidyanath temple rammed into a truck carrying gas cylinders near the Jamunia forest area under Mohanpur block in Jharkhand's Deoghar district. The driver, officials say, had dozed off at the wheel. The impact was immediate and catastrophic. The bus driver died on the spot. But the worst wasn't over. With no one at the wheel, the vehicle hurtled on for nearly 500 metres, ultimately smashing into a roadside heap of bricks near Jamunia Chowk. Six more people were killed on the spot, and many others suffered grievous injuries. Eyewitness accounts and police statements suggest that the death toll may still rise. 'Almost everyone in the bus was returning after worshipping… The driver had probably fallen asleep, that's when all this happened," said Ramanuj Yadav, a local resident who witnessed the wreckage and helped with rescue efforts. The bus, a 32-seater, was en route to Basukinath when the collision occurred. The truck it crashed into was transporting highly flammable gas cylinders, heightening the risk and panic at the scene. Fortunately, there was no fire. Inspector General of Dumka Zone Shailendra Kumar Sinha confirmed the details and said investigations are underway. 'A bus carrying Kanwariyas collided with a gas-laden truck. Several of the injured are critical," he noted. This tragic crash has cast a long shadow over the month of Shravan, a time otherwise marked by chants, devotion, and saffron-clad faith. For the families now preparing for funerals instead of welcoming their loved ones home, that devotion has turned into unimaginable grief. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The accident occurred around 5.30 am near the Jamuniya forest under the Mohanpur Police Station limits when the bus collided with the commercial vehicle, they said. "Six devotees were killed and 24 others injured in the accident at Jamuniya Chowk in Deoghar. Eight of the 24 injured have been shifted to AIIMS, Deoghar, while the remaining are undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital," Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Naman Priyesh Lakra said. Earlier, Inspector General (Dumka Zone) Shailendra Kumar Sinha told PTI that the accident occurred after the bus with Kanwariyas on board collided head-on with the truck transporting gas cylinders. The bus was severely damaged, he added. "Eighteen devotees have died in a bus-truck accident during the Kanwar Yatra in the month of Shravan in Deoghar in my Lok Sabha constituency. However, the police confirmed that only six people lost their lives, while the condition of two others is serious. Kanwariyas are devotees of Lord Shiva. At least 24 Kanwariyas were injured in the accident and taken to various hospitals and nearby primary health centres, including the Saraiyahat PHC in Dumka, another officer said. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren condoled the death of the Kanwariyas and said a rescue operation was being conducted by the district administration there. "Very sad news has been received about the deaths of devotees travelling in a bus in an accident near Jamuniya chowk in Mohanpur block of Deoghar." "The district administration is providing medical assistance to the injured with relief and rescue operations.
